Grounder to F1, R1 stays on first and is safe when tagged?
Another dad and I were enjoying our 9-10 yr-old Mustang game. Ball grounded to F1, R1 not knowing what to do stands there on first. F1 tags R1, then steps on first for double play. I thought it was correct.

This dad contends that R1 is safe on first and untaggable if he remains on first base. That the only option would be to throw to second, then back to first for the double play, or tag first to get batter-runner out which would of course eliminate the force out and R1 could remain safely on first.

He was adamant, so I thought I'd go do some research. Can't find it anywhere. The best I found is that as soon as batter becomes runner, R1 has no right to first base anymore, and I would think could not be safe from a tag by remaining on first base.

Who's right?

You're right.

If you were playing Mustang you were using OBR and not FED or NCAA. But their rules are the same, only the rule number is different.

2.00 A FORCE PLAY is a play in which a runner legally loses his right to occupy a base by reason of the batter becoming a runner.

7.08 Any runner is out when _ (e) He fails to reach the next base before a fielder tags him or the base, after he has been forced to advance by reason of the batter becoming a runner.
