Most unique team name/mascot?
|
My answer to this question for a long time was the UC-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs until I met my roommate from college. She is from a small town in Illinois where the public high school's mascot is the Pretzels. That has to be really high up there for the weirdest high school one.
A couple weeks ago I was discussing this with a friend of mine. We concluded that minor league baseball has some of the weirdest including the Lugnuts, the Mud Hens, and the Isotopes.
What's the most unique team name you have heard of or encountered, from any level, in your sports experience?

Had a college buddie from Hickman High, home of the Kewpies (as in Kewpie Dolls).
I thought our college knickname was bad (the Engineers) but Kewpies beat that hands down.

RPI perhaps?
"W" instead of "R"
"Wistah" Poly-Tech (Wistah as in Worcester) ;o)
Woopie Tech came up with a better package for me to play hoop than either MIT or Northeasten so I chose Tech.

A-Trish,
FYI.....
Freeport Pretzels (IL) -- The town had two major economic products: beer and pretzels. Since the "Brewers" was deemed inappropriate for a high school mascot, the school went with the other choice.

Not Baseball, But Rugby League Football.
The Rabbitohs
In Australia, street Fish vendors are still called Fishos and back in the early 1900's in Sydney, Street Vendors selling fresh rabbit meat were called "Rabbitohs"
Sometimes now, they are called the nickname "Bunnies"... Imagine A PRO rough tough Rugby League team called "the Bunnies".....
Hard to just give them respect as being rough and tough pro football players isn't it?
( BTW, rough and tough "Gladiator" phone throwing Actor Russell Crowe is one of the main financial benefactors and long term fan of the "Bunnies")
Also one NRL team called "The Eels"
Use to be one called "The Berries"
Canterbury-Bankstown, but they got smart and are now "The Bulldogs"
For Baseball I still think "The Dodgers" for Trolley Dodgers.
The Rabbitohs

Talking about Russell Crowe, Glen....
Recent news report stated he no longer will allow cheerleaders at his Rugby (team) game venue.
Deems them to be "inappropiate"..... "distracting" etc., according to the report. [sheeesh!!]
Hope he never buys into the Dallas Cowboys, or other NFL teams.
Frank!

If i have well known Aussie blokes trying to ban scantily clad women at Aussie football games...
I might just have to move back to the USA soon where football cheerleading sanity prevails....

Cool topic.
Here in SoCal, our High School's have the same assortment of Native Americans, Fierce Animals, Birds of Prey, and Ancient Military Types as anywhere else, but we also have:
Phantoms, Flashes, Gauls, and Friars; Burros, Barons, Kares, and my favorite, the Glendale HS Nitros. Boom baby.

In my high school in south Texas we were the Robstown Cottonpickers. In Jr. High we were the nemesis of the high school mascot, so our jr high mascot was the Boll Weevil.
The mighty Boll Weevils!
As a side note, Gene Upshaw, NFL Players Union leader was both a Boll Weevil and a Cottonpicker.

Not an official team name from a school, but I kid you not - a couple of years ago, my son's team (in a sport to not be named :)) named itself "The Cholesterol Hamsters".
And don't ask, because I have no idea where it came from.
- the other Frank (or one of them, anyway)
