BLLB PIONEER PASSES AWAY
Barboursville Little League Baseball has lost a great teacher and pioneer to our kids. Merle Dewain "Dee" Adkins passed away Monday, June 16, 2003. Services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Thursday, June 19, 2003 at the Wallace Funeral Home and Chapel. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Barboursville.

Dee was active in our community where he coached baseball and football to our youth for more than 30 years. He has touched each and everyone of us and our league is stronger today because of him.

Our condolences are with his wife, Diane and three sons, Dewain, Dax and Rick along with their spouses and Dee's grandchildren, Kaithlin, Nick, Logan and Brady.

Dee, we all are better people just being able to be in your presence. Your work with our youth will pay dividends to our community for years to come. Thank you from all of us at Barboursville Little League Baseball for being our pioneer.

BLLB Secure 4 Teams in Ghiz Quarterfinals
Major Boys division of the Les Ghiz Memorial Tournament has reached the quarterfinals and Barboursville Little League Baseball is well represented as four teams are still in the hunt for the championship.

Tower Foodfair advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Dans (Riverside) and Mike Froble Reds (Buffalo-Lav). Both wins can be contributed to great pitching from Matthew Walker, Colin Merritt and one big out made by Will Lester. Matthew Walker has hit two monster homeruns in the tournament. Tower's next opponent is still undetermined as Moses (East Htgn) and Marlins (Wayne) play today. Game time is Thursday, 5:30pm at Ceredo-Kenova Little League.

Dr. Crews advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Chapman Printing (Vinson) and First Sentry (League 3). While game 1 was won with offense game 2 against League 3 was won by great pitching as Jason Brooks pitched 6 solid innings in the 3-2 seven inning game. Shane Hart infield hit scored Colton Ruley from third as he beat the play at the plate. Dr. Crews next opponent will be the Braves from Buffalo-Lav. Game time is Thursday, 7:30pm at West Huntington (St. Clouds)

First State Bank advance with two wins over Glenn's (CK) and Becketts (Salt Rock). Again quality pitching from Chris Weed and Cameron Adkins was the flavor of the day. FSB next opponent is BLLB's regular season and tournament champion Moses Auto Mall.

Moses Auto Mall advanced to the quarterfinals after receiving a first round bye and a 10-5 victory over McDonald's (Mason). Tyler Anderson came in relief and shut down a very stubborn Mason County teams as Moses spotted McDonald's three runs in the first inning.

Game time for Moses Auto Mall vs. FSB is 5:30pm Thursday at West Huntington (St. Clouds).

Good luck to all four of our teams in their quest for a championship.

11/12 RECEIVE #2 SEED AFTER 17-0 WALLAP
BARBOURSVILLE 17 MASON COUNTY 0. BLLB 11/12 All Stars receive the #2 seed in the single elimination tournament following a 17-run, 17 hits attack against Mason County this past Saturday afternoon at Hite-Saunders Little League.

Tyler Bartley pitched two steady innings of pitching giving up one hit, while Jordan Marcum and Jake Gaskins pitched perfect innings in the third and fourth innings in relief. BLLB All-Stars' offense continues to stay very aggressive with Corey Miller, Bryan Turman and Bryce Paul collecting three hits apiece with Miller hitting his third homerun (two run shot) in the past two games.

The offensive explosion doesn't stop there, as Jake Gaskins, Tyler Bartley and Matt Walker collected two hits apiece with Bartley and Walker each connecting with their first long ball in the post season, both were solo shots, Walker also collected a two run double. Jordan Marcum and Matt Christian collected the other base hits in the winning effort.

BLLB All-Star now must wait until tonight to see who they play next as they will face the winner between Ceredo-Kenova and Buffalo Lav. which plays tonight at Ceredo-Kenova Little League. Next game will be Tuesday night for BLLB. (See Homepage for details).

Behind the effective pitching of Bryan Turman and another game with timely hitting in clutch situation along with a few key defensive plays when needed, BLLB advances to the West Virginia State Little League Tournament being held this year in our home district with the host Ceredo Kenova Little League. BLLB first game will be Saturday night at 8pm against Logan Civic Little League in the pool play format.

BLLB opened the scoring in the second inning when Bryce Paul leadoff with a solo homerun to centerfield. Korey Goad received a base on ball, Cole Seaton replaced Goad as a pinch runner, Matt Walker's sac bunt was misplayed and Seaton scored. Ian Rowe followed with a single and Corey Miller connected with a two run single to cap off a 4-run second inning.

After holding East Huntington scoreless for the first two innings, Turman gave up a two run homerun in the bottom of the third inning to close the gap to 4-2, BLLB. BLLB increased their lead to 6-2 in the top of the fourth inning as Walker, with two hits on the night, connected with a base hit, Seaton pitched run for Walker, Jordan Marcum was hit by a pitch, then Miller collected his third RBI of the night with a fielder choice scoring Seaton. Jake Gaskins, with two hits on the night, followed with a double scoring Marcum to round out the scoring in the fourth.

BLLB capped off their scoring in the fifth with a sac fly that scored Seaton, his third run scored of the game, from the bat of Paul. East Huntington's rally fell short as they collected two runs in the bottom of the six to make the final 7-4. Turman finished the night with 13 strikeouts while allowing seven hits.

BLLB 9/10 CAPTURE DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP
BARBOURSVILLE 14 BUFFALO-LAVALETTE 3. (Anthony Hanshew, The Herald-Dispatch, 07/08/03) Barboursville took a huge step toward a state tournament appearance with a six-run first inning, then clinched the berth with seven runs in the third.
Patience at the plate, combined with Chris Weed's solid pitching, paved the way to a 14-3 mercy rule victory Monday over Buffalo-Lavalette, sending the unbeaten Barboursville All-Stars to the 9-10 years old Little League State Tournament in Fayetteville beginning July 26.
"Going to the state tournament, I just hope we can go up and compete," Barboursville coach Greg Brooks said. "And I know we can. I hope we can bring back a championship back. And we will. I have faith in these guys."
Barboursville lineup gave Brooks good reason for confidence. The first eight batters reached safely as Barboursville jumped to a 6-0 lead.
Weed opened the scoring with a two-run, bases-loaded single to left. Barboursville (6-0) also scored in the first on a groundout, an error and two bases-loaded walks.
Buffalo-Lavalette (5-2) countered with three runs in the second. Following a bases-loaded walk, Eric Hatten lined a two-run single to right.
Caleb Ross upped the lead to 7-3 in the second when he walked and scored during a rundown. One inning later, Barboursville removed any doubt from the District 1 title matchup.
T.J. Knopf capped the seven run third with a three run double, Ross and Christian MacCourtney also had RBI hits in the inning, and Michael Baumgardner drew a bases-loaded walk.
Barboursville totaled 14 runs on six hits, while Weed limited Buffalo-Lavalette to two hits.
"When you don't hit the ball, and don't can't throw strikes, you don't win many games" Buffalo-Lavalette coach Eddie Booten said. "But even if they would have won, I couldn't be any more proud of them."
Weed struck out nine in his four-innings, two-hitter. "He pitched real well for us," Brooks said, "He did an excellent job."
Rounding out Barboursville's championship roster were Colton Ruley, Jason Brooks, Evan Oyler, Evan Shoemaker, Zach Soward and Chase Lusher...........
