Bandys Trojan Duals
Saturday November 27th, 2004

Bandys wins the Trojan Duals

Saturday night the Bandys Trojan wrestlers did something they have never accomplished before. They won the dual team tournament they have hosted for the past nine years. The Trojan went 5-0 in the tournament. Bandys started off by defeating Hopewell 46-24 in the first match of the day. In their second match Bandys was awarded a forfeit from Currituck County who did not show up for the tournament. In the semi-finals Bandys defeated Glenn 57-20 while East Gaston defeated Mt. Tabor 44-30. This set up a tournament final where the defending 3A Individual Champions from East Gaston matched up with the 1A/2A defending individual state co-champions from Bandys. The match started at 112lbs where Matt Smith won a 15-1 major decision giving the Trojans a four point lead. In the 119lb match East Gaston's state champion Jared Griggs won a 15-6 major decision over Michael Styer tying the team score at four a each. Bandys did not have a wrestler at 125lbs so the Warriors picked up six more team points by forfeit making the score 10-6 in their favor. In the 130lb match East Gaston's state champion Rob Tate won a hard fought 10-6 decision over Bandys state 5th placer Matt Stogner. This increased the Warriors lead to 13-4. The 135lb weight class featured two state placers, Jerry Stogner of Bandys and Bryan Mullis of East Gaston. In the first minute of the match though Stogner injured his knee and had to default from the match. This increased the Warriors lead to 19-4. The 140lb match show cased two more fine wrestlers, East Gaston's state champion Justin Sparrow and Bandys state 4th placer Patrick McIntosh. Sparrow scored eight points in the first period and nine points in the third period thus winning a 17-3 major decision. This gave East Gaston a 23-4 lead going into the 145lb weight class match-up. In this match Bandys state qualifier Colt Howell started the Trojan comeback with a second period pin over Keith Jonas. This was followed by a 9-2 decision from Bandys state placer William Gilleland over Chris Wittekind. At 160lbs East Gaston forfeited to Bandys state champion Byron Sigmon and moved their 160lb wrestler up to wrestle at 171lbs. This featured another great match-up where Bandys state runner-up Craig McIntosh won a 17-5 major decision over Zach Rodgers tying the team score at 23 points a piece. East Gaston took the lead back when Cody Edge pinned Anthony Moorison late in the second period in the 189lb weight class. Bandys tied the score back at 29 a piece when East Gaston had to forfeit to Bandys' Justin Houston at 215lbs. In the 275lb match Markley Moorison gave Bandys back the lead when he won a 5-1 decision over Dustin Wilbanks. This led up to the final match of the tournament at 103lbs with Bandys leading 31-29 In this match Ryan White won a hard fought 10-6 decision over Bryan Davis. This win made the final score 34-29 giving the Trojan the tournament championship. Five Bandys wrestlers finished the tournament at 5-0. These gold medalist were Ryan White, Colt Howell, William Gilleland, Byron Sigmon, and Craig McIntosh. Winning silver medals for Bandys were Matt Stogner, Jerry Stogner, and Patrick McIntosh all of which finished at 4-1 for the tournament.

Bandy's Byron Sigmon (160lbs) was voted by the coaches at the tournament as the Most Outstanding Wrestler. He finished with four pins and a forfeit for the day. One of these was a second period pin over Freedom's Dustin Ethridge. Sigmon is ranked by NC Mat.com as the state's top ranked 1A/2A 152lb wrestler while Ethridge is the state's top ranked 4A 160lb wrestler. The winner of the most pins in the least amount of time was won by Chad Brown of Glenn High School. Brown (275lbs) had five pins in a total of 1:50. One of these was in :04.

The pre-tournament pick for the top goes to East Gaston. The Warriors won the 3A Individual State tournament last February with four individual state champions and a total of six returning state qualifiers. Although four-time state champion Dusty McKinney has graduated East Gaston will bring three state champs to the Trojan Duals. Sophomore Jared Griggs will move up from 103lbs to 112lbs this year. Senior Rob Tate will be competing at 125lbs at the duals. He won his first state championship last year at 112lbs. Another sophomore, Justin Sparrow, will move up to 135lbs. Last season he won his state championship at 119lbs. East Gaston will be the favorite again this season to win the Individual State tournament and maybe even the state dual title too. East Gaston Coach Scott Goins will be bringing his team to the Trojan Duals for the first time this year. He said the competition at this tournament will help prepare the Warriors for the state duals in February. Other top wrestlers for East Gaston are:
Senior state placer Bryan mullis (6th), sophomoer SQ Chris Smith, and junior SQ Nathan Wooten.

Another team to watch is the host team Bandys. The Trojan has traditionally been a slow starter as far as dual competition goes and this could be the same this season as many of their wrestlers are currently in the same weight class. What the Trojans do have though is several of the states top wrestlers. The team will be led by junior Byron Sigmon and senior Craig McIntosh. These two wrestlers were have both been two-time state finalist for the Trojans and both competed for the national team in Fargo, North Dakota last July. Sigmon had a spectacular spring and summer last season. He was the 1A/2A 152lb NC State Champion for Bandys in February. He added to this adding four All-American honors to his credit. He won the Ohio Tournament of Champions in the cadet division, and became a double All-American at Fargo by placing 8th in Greco-Roman and becoming the Cadet Freestyle National Runner-Up. He also was the NHSCA Folkstyle National Open High School Champion at Virginia Beach, Virginia last July.
McIntosh, a NC State Champion as a Freshman, was the 1A/2A NC 160lb State Runner-Up last February. Last Spring he placed 4th at USA Northeast Regional in Greco-Roman in Brockport, NY. McIntosh went 3-2 in Greco-Roman and 2-2 in Freestyle in Fargo.
Another Trojan to watch is junior William Gilleland. He is a two-time regional champion for Bandys and placed 5th at the state tournament. Gilleland also wrestled alot last spring and should contend for a state championship in February. Other top trojans are: sophomore state placer Patrick McIntosh (4th), junior state placer Matt Stogner (5th), senior state placer Jerry Stogner (6th), senior BJ Little (Regional Champ), sophomore Matt Woodlief (Reg. 3rd), and new comer from Alexander central sophomore Colt Howell (Reg. 4th).
**********
Jack Britt returns again this year with anoth strong dual team. The Bucs return five state qualifiers. They are led by senior 4A State Champion and two-time National Team Member Jake Smith. Smith was a High School All-American in 2003. He also placed 3rd in the state tournament as a sophomore. Other top wrestlers for Jack Britt are:   sophomore SQ and National Team member Jordan Afaro, sophomore Justice Ike, junior SQ Eric Jackson, senior SQ Ricardo Gautier. The Bucs finished third in the Trojan Duals last year.
**********
Freedom returns hoping for another good run at the Trojan Duals. Last year the Patriots were the tournament runners-up. They return three former state qualifiers. They will be led by two-time senior state qualifier Dustin Ethridge. Ethridge was injured in the regional last season and did not qualify for the 20004 state tournament. Junior SQ Josh Collet will help add muscle to the Patriots line up as will two-time SQ Cody Brown.
