Bandys Wrestling History
Bandys wrestling was founded in 1976. William Crawford, currently superintendent of the Newton-Conover school system, coached the team. The program was closed in 1981. for fourteen years Bandys wrestling did not exist. In 1995 through the efforts coaches Ronnie Sigmon and Tim Harvell the program was restarted. The coaches that first year was Ronnie Sigmon, Tim Harvell and Forrest Blake. The 1995-96 first year team finished with a 6-12 record and one All-Conference wrestler.
In 1996-97 Bandys finished the season with a 19-8-1 dual record and they were conference runners-up. This team had four All-Conference wrestlers and four State Qualifiers.
The 1997-98 season saw the Trojans emerge as a regional power in the 1A/2A division. The team made the state dual team playoffs but lost in the first round to Starmount. Bandys was the SD-7 Conference Champions and the West Regional Tournament Runners-up. At the State Tournament the Trojans placed 7th. For the season Bandys had seven All-Conference performers and six State Qualifiers.
In the 1998-99 season the Trojans were again SD-7 Conference Champions. At the dual team playoffs Bandys won the District title before losing in the third round to eventual dual team state champion Alleghany. Bandys finished with a 25-3 dual team record. The Trojans also won the West Regional Tournament and finished as the 1A/2A State Tournament Runners-up. Bandys had eleven All-Conference performers and seven State Qualifiers. Amoung these there were two State Champions. Junior Sean McIntosh (152lbs) and Senior Jarvis McCullough (275lbs). Sophomore Eric Burns (125lbs) was a State Runner-up. A great accomplishment for a team in only their fourth year of wrestling!
In 1999-2000 again Bandys won the SD-7 Conference and the District Duals before losing to the eventual dual state champion West Lincoln 32-27. The Trojans again recovered from this loss to win the West Regional Tournament and finish as the State Tournament Runners-up. Bandys dual record was 23-10.
