Wrestlers in the Spotlight
*** SPOT LIGHT WRESTLER FOR DECEMBER ***
152lbs Byron Sigmon, junior, son of Ronnie and Deborah Sigmon

Byron missed the two-day East Mecklenburg tournament because he was playing in the football play-offs. During December and New Years Day he was the tournament champion at the West Forsyth Titians Clash, the prestigious WRAL Invitational, the RJReynolds Invitational, and the North Wilkes Viking Classic. In these tournaments he scored eleven pins, a 13-0 major decision and a 7-1 decision. In the finals of the WRAL he pinned defending South Carolina State Champion Tony Simmons of Summerville in the second period.

103lb Ryan White, sophomore, son of Dave and Karen White

Ryan started the season by going 1-2 at the providence tournament. He did not make weight for the North Wilkes Duals, but one week later he had a great tournament in the Bandys Trojan Duals. At this tournament all matches started at 112lbs so the 103lb weight class was the final match of each dual. Bandys won the tournament, but in the match with Freedom and the final with East Gaston the out come was determined in the final match at 103lbs. Ryan pinned his opponent from Freedom making the final score 45-33 in Bandys favor. In the Championship final, Ryan won a hard fought 10-6 decision enabling Bandys to claim a 34-29 victory over the defending 3A State Champions.

November 27th, 2004 Bandys wins the ninth annal Trojans Duals with a 34-29 win over East Gaston in the tournament final. Bandys' Byron Sigmon was voted as the tournament MOW. Go to the Trojan Dual page for the full story and results.

Bandys finsihed as the tournament runner-up at the North Wilkes Duals on Saturday November 20th. The Bandys' junior state champion won his 100th career match for the Trojans against North Wilkes in the tournament finals. CONGRATULATIONS BYRON!!!

Gilleland won his 100th career match for Bandys on Saturday November 13th, 2004 at the Providence tournament.

- Saturday, November 13th -

    The Bandys wrestling team opened their 2004-05 wrestling season by winning
the Providence Invitational Endowment Tournament. The tournament featured several
of the best teams in the state. Bandys had eight wrestlers in the finals of the
thirteen-team tournament. Three Trojan Wrestlers won championships in their weight
class.    Jerry Stogner won the 135lb weight class by taking a 8-3 decision over
Ben Smith of Central Cabarrus. William Gilleland won the 152lb weight class by
scoring a tech fall over Mark Henderson of Central Cabarrus. Craig McIntosh won
the 189lb weight class by pinning Tyler Yates in the first period. Five Trojans
finished as tournament runner-up. They were BJ Little (125lbs), Matt Stogner (130lbs),
Colt Howell (140lbs), Patrick McIntosh (145lbs), and Byron Sigmon (160lbs). At
215lbs Markley Moorison placed 3rd.
       Dustin Ethridge of Freedom was voted as the tournament MOW. He upset defending
State Champion Byron Sigmon of Bandys 9-7 in the finals of the 160lb weight class.

On October 30th, 2004 six Bandys wrestlers participated in the Super-32 Pre-Season Tournament at Morehead High School in Eden, NC. The tournament is the top pre-season tournament on the east coast featured many of the best wrestlers in Eastern USA. The Trojans did very well with four wrestlers placing 7th or better in their weight classes.

Byron Sigmon was the tournament runner-up at 152lbs. He defeated Georgia State qualifier Devin Graham in the quarter finals. Sigmon next defeated North Carolina State Champion Pete Puckett of Butler HS by decision in the semifinals by decision. In the finals he lost a decision to two-time Virginia State Champion Chris Brown.

Craig McIntosh finished tied for fifth. In the quarter finals McIntosh defeated two-timw North Carolina State Champion Jesse Creed of Ragesdale HS by decision. He lost two two-time South Carolina State Runner-Up JJ Davis by decision in the semi-finals. He lost in the consolation semi-finals to Virginia Runner-Up Byran Lenohardt by decision.

William Gilleland also finished tied for fifth. He defeated North Carolina State Champion Jack Hartley of Bulington Williams by decision in the quarter finals. He lost to Virginia State Champion Junior Pearman by one point in the semi-finals. He then lost in the consolation semi-finals by one point to West Virginia State 3rd placer Henry Miller. Gilleland had defeated Miller earier in the third round.

Colt Howell finished tied for seventh. He finished the tournament 4-2. Trent Mauney lost two close matches and finished 0-2. Patrick McIntosh did not make weight and did not compete

In the 2003-04 season Bandys won the Midwest 1A/2A Regional Tournament and shared the State Tournament Championship with Brevard. The Trojans had seven wrestlers in the state championship. Sophomore Byron Sigmon won the state championship at 152lbs finishing the season with a 49-1 record. Junior Craig McIntosh was the state runner-up at 160lbs. His brother freshman Patrick McIntosh placed 4th at 130lbs. Sophomores William Gilleland (135lbs) and Matt Stogner (112lbs) both placed 5th. Junior Jerry Stogner (125lbs) placed 6th. Sophomore Matt Woodlief did not place.

Special Note:
Bandys four-time state qualifier Lucas Bandys (class of 2002) was a vertern of the war in Iraq. Bandy was a battle field medic. He is in Germany and will soon return to Iraq for his second tour of duty. Bandy is now a flight medic on Black Hawk helicoptors. We Are Proud Of You Lucas!

On July 31st, 2004 Byron Sigmon was the Cadet Freestyle 152lb National Runner-Up. Earlier in the week he became a Cadet Greco-Roman All-American by placing 8th. Byron was coached to his double All-American status by two of his Bandys High School coaches, Ronnie Sigmon and Geoff McIntosh. Congratulations Byron!

On July 3rd, 2004 Byron Sigmon won the NHSCA National Open (Folkstyle)in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Sigmon (152lbs) defeated Maryland senior state Champion Chris DeVilbiss 3-2 in the finals. DeVilbiss is now a freshman on the Oklahomia University wrestling team. The 152lb weight class had 40 wrestlers in the brackett with state champions and State placers through out the country.
