Match Report
We're off the bottom of the League with a well deserved victory against 4th placed Hall Russell.
This was always going to be a tricky game as Halls had comprehensively beaten us 6-1 at Milton Park at the start of the season, and with a strong wind and rain starting to fall just before kick off it seemed that it would be an even more difficult a task.
Hall Russell won the toss and elected to play with the wind and we got off to the worst possible start when in the very first minute Darren Reid tried to let the ball run for a goal kick but a Halls player nipped in to square the ball for Rae to score into the roof of the net from 4 yards.
Halls continued to look dangerous as Saints were unnerved by the bad start, but slowly we came into the game with Stuart Rogie putting in an impressive display in midfield. Saints began to play the football we can play and started to create chances but it wasn't until the 27th minute that we levelled the game. Scott Davie found himself in a good position and saw that Sean Napier was better placed to get in a shot and despite his first effort being blocked Napier hit low into the net.
Despite playing with the wind and rain blowing straight into his face Murray Buchan was not overly worked in the Banchory goal, but when he had something to deal with he did so confidently. A minute from half time Napier found space on the right and sent a low cross in for Ben McGregor to force the ball over the Halls goal line at the back post to make it 2-1 to Saints at half time.

Into the second half and playing with the strong wind it was debateable whether his would be an advantage or not, but Saints put the pressure on right away and with 8 minutes gone it was 3-1. A cross field pass to the left found Napier who was confident enough to send in a first touch cross for Jack Henderson to bullet a header into the roof of the net from 10 yards.

Then on 61 minutes the lead was increased with a wind assisted goal. Buchan sent a long clearance up the middle finding Jack Henderson just inside the Hall Russell penalty box. With a defender in close attendance Jack waited for the second bounce to get himself into the perfect position to swivel and hit a low shot past the home keeper to make it 4-1.

It should have been 5-1 10 minutes later when McGregor beat the offside trap but with only the keeper to beat he shot weakly straight at the keepers legs. From the clearance Hall Russell almost pulled a goal back but Buchan saved the day. Halls were obviously not down and out and they created a couple of chances that could have made it a nervous finish, but the Saints defence stood firm to get a much needed three League points.

The win now takes us off bottom spot up two places above East End and Longside and the next game on Saturday 28th December against East End at Milton Park, kick off 1.30pm, will be a big six pointer for both sides and hopefully we can get a good crowd down to Milton to cheer on the lads.
