Newmains United 1 v 3 SAINTS

Saints progressed to Sunday's Emirates Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round Draw with a hard fought victory over Newmains.

The pitch although very heavy was playable after an early morning inspection and held up remarkably well. The Victoria Park ground was at one time a proper stadium with a covered enclosure and terracing, but like so many grounds in that area, they have slowly deteriorated over the years. However, Newmains are to be commended for what they are trying to achieve, but have a hard task ahead trying to obtain a lease from the local Council so that they can make improvements. We wish them all the best in their quest.

The BBC cameras were there to film the whole game, and anyone wishing to watch it should go to www.myscotfc.com.

The home side got off to a great start when they scored in the first minute when Airth rose unchallenged at the back post to head home from a free kick. The home side got a great lift from this and were giving Saints a tougher time than expected.

But Saints gradually got to grips with the heavy underfoot conditions  and forced several corners with Phil Watson heading onto the bar from one of them. But Newmains hung to their one goal advantage till half time.

With only 8 minutes gone in the second half Shaun Carrol blasted home a wonderful 25 yarder to equalise and then Andy Courage turned his man in the box, was hauled down and promptly score from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 Saints.

As the home side chased the quick passing saints all around the field, they quickly ran out of puff and Stuart Skinner made it 3-1 with a few minutes left.

 Full match report to follow.
