Monday, August 31 Dyce Match Report
A first half double from Jack Meldrum earned a hard fought three points for Banchory St Ternan at Ian Mair Park, Dyce on Saturday.
Games between the two teams have been close affairs in recent years, and this was to be no differant.
However, it took Saints just two minutes to take the lead when Richard Stainer and Meldrum linked up well for the young forward to strike a low angled drive home.
Dyce's Kevin Neish would cause problems for the Saints defence all afternoon, and on 16 minutes despite under pressure from Galashan, tested Sim but his effort was straight at him.
As Dyce pushed for the equaliser, Saints were living dangerously with some sloppy defending.
But on 29 minutes, from a Dyce corner, Saints used the counter-attack to double thier lead. The ball was cleared to Stainer, who quickly played in strike partner Meldrum, who made no mistake with a powerful shot from just inside the box.
The home side continued to push for their breakthrough as Saints looked to hit on the counter. Sim did well on two occasions to hold on to firstly a close range header and secondly to intercept a dangerous cross.
Anything to threaten Saints clean sheet was coming from Kevin Neish. As the Dyce players got more frustrated with thier inability to take thier chances and the performance of the referee, two players were booked in quick succession. Saints Phil Watson also entered the book for what looked like a perfectly well timed challenge on Neish.
Into the second half, and Saints manager Steve Scott made two midfield changes. Neale Henderson replaced trailist Shaun Carrol, and Keiron Graham came on for Alan McRae.
Ten minutes after the restart Scott used his third and final substitution when Keith Horne replaced Alan Ogston. From a Horne corner, the ball was flicked on by Meldrum, and Shand side footed over from six yards when it was easier to hit the back of the net.
Sim was called into action again on 59 minutes when he made a good stop from a shot then punched against his own bar from the resulting corner.
New Dyce signing McCrum was also causing the Saints problems and after a quick one-two, shot straight at Sim on 66 minutes.
Two more Dyce players entered the book as their frustrations boiled over after some strange decisions from referee Veitch. But Dyce did get one back on 77 minutes when Graham lost possesion in midfield and Dyce broke away setting off McCrum, who closed in on Sim's goal and dispatched a low right foot shot.
Saints held out for a precious three points ahead of their Grill League Cup Quarter Final tie against Hermes at Milton Park on Saturday. Kick off is 2:15pm and the game will be decided by penalties if the score is level after 90 minutes.
