Sunday, August 23 Culter's Match Report
A LATE goal from Jack Meldrum earned Banchory a share of the spoils at Crombie Park in the first Deeside derby of the season.
Both teams had gone into the match on a high after qualifying for the knockout stages of the Grill League Cup.
The first half was a scrappy affair with neither side able to create much in the final third. Greg Sim was called into action to tip an Allan Youngson free kick over the bar. Three minutes after the break, the game eventually burst into life when the inrushing McBain headed Stott's corner just wide. Moments later a Robertson piledriver had the Banchory keeper saving at full stretch. The Culter bench made a double substitution after 66 minutes with Foster and Mountford replacing McBain and Wyness. The change had an immediate impact. The newly introduced Barry Foster bulleted home a Youngson corner with his first touch to the delight of the home fans. The Deesiders could have increased their lead but Cooper's volley struck the upright before Youngson's shot hit the post. Gary Thow and Andy Gibson's men were to rue those missed opportunities. Banchory pressed for an equaliser and in 88 minutes Stainer's shot from eight yards was saved by the legs of John Farquhar. However in the final minute of the match a Banchory free kick on the edge of the box led to a goalmouth scramble with the ball falling kindly into the path of Jack Meldrum who netted from close range to earn his side a share of the spoils. |
