Game #1 featured solid pitching by starter Andrew Witczak who struck out 6 batters in only three inning of work against the Tri-State Arsenals (BLK) from New Jersey. New comer Tommy Fortman closed out the win scattering three hits over the final three innings with 3 strike outs to secure the 11-2 victory. Witczak and Fortman combined pitching effort yielded zero earned runs in the contest. Leading the offense was new comer Jordan Taylor who started the scoring in the second inning by doubling down the left field line to score Ben Strauch and Kylen Lane. Ryan Gilbert keyed the 5-run sixth inning by Launching a long 3-run homer to left following Brandon Hovel's 2-run rbi double that plated Taylor and Dylan Cooper. Right-Handed Pitcher Cooper continued his spectacular post season mastery of Tournament Opponents by stifling the Tri-Star Arsenals (Gray) bats in Game #2, pitching 5 scoreless innings before being lifted in the sixth inning. In the sixth inning New Comer Konrad Anderson made his pitching debut for the Rebels pitching 2/3 of an inning before Witzcak entered the game to record the third out by getting the Arsenal's tough number four hitter to meekly roll out to shortstop Fortman with the bases loaded to keep the score knotted at two-two. THE YANKEE REBELS 13U WIN 2009 WBA MARYLAND SELECT CHAMPIONSHIP
(Mechanicsville,MD) The Yankee Rebels 13u Baseball Team won the 2009 WBA (World Baseball Association) Maryland Select Championship in Mechanicsville, Maryland this past weekend. Despite heavy hearts shared by all after learning that 48 hours earlier Ex-Yankee Rebel Player, Lonnie Hill had disappeared in the ocean near Garden City Beach (south of Myrtle Beach), the Rebels defied the odds by putting together a string of excellent pitched games while displaying stellar defense on their way to capturing the WBA Crown. In the opening game the 13u Yankee Rebels fell to the 14u New Jersey Pine Hill 7-4, after entering the sixth inning tied 2-2 before Pine Hill exploded for 5 additional runs. The only highlight of the game for the Rebels was Brandon Hovel's solo homer to left that traveled more than 320 feet. The Rebels bounced back in Game#2 with a resounding 13-2 win over the Hagerstown Hurricanes. The offense was led by Drew Witczak multiple hit game that included a single and a RBI Double that drove in Ryan Gilbert who previously doubled to lead off the third inning. Devin Beverly added to the offensive surge , scoring four runs and swiping three bases. The trio of Witczak, Andrew Killom, and Hovel combined to pitch a 4-hitter to secure the win. The Semi-final Game was a re-match with the Hurricanes who were out to prove that Game #2 versus the Rebels wasn't a true indication of their team's overall talent. The game was a nail-bitter as both starting pitchers proved to be on top of their games, as the game entered the sixth inning with the Rebels holding on to a slim 1-0 lead. Rebels Pitcher Dylan Cooper pitched perhaps his best game ever as he dominated the Canes facing only four batters over the required minimum on his way to a 4-hit complete game (no walks) shutout victory. The Rebels gave Cooper some breathing room in the sixth inning by scoring three runs on singles by Hovel, Gilbert, and Kylen Lane to secure the 4-0 victory. Rebels catcher, Ryan Gilbert completely shut down the Canes running game by throwing out five "would-be" runners.
The Championship Game started in the same fashion as the Semi-final Game ended, as pitching and defense dominated the contest. The Rebels squared off against the always tough Southern Maryland Renegades, who knocked off top Seed 14u N.J. Pine Hill in their Semi-final game hours earlier. The second inning would prove to be the most critical moment of the game as the inning began with the Renegades loading the bases against Rebels Starter Drew Witczak with no outs. The inning began with Renegades' Kenny walkng, Sams singling to center, and Troy reaching on an error by Rebels Shortstop Andrew Killom. After a brief mound visit by Head Coach Sherman Reed, Witczak settled down by retiring Markey on a fly ball to Ben Strauch in center, Cal on a pop fly back to the mound, and White on a swinging strike out. The Rebels countered in the bottom of the second inning by taking a 1-0 lead on a RBI single by Geno Ciotta, scoring Brandon Layman who had previously singled to begin the inning. Not to be out done by Cooper's stellar pitching performance in the Semis, Witczak made Ciotta's game changing RBI single stand by allowing only two hits over the final five innings to give the Rebels the WBA Maryland Select 13u Championship and a 1-0 win. "After all we've been through with the tragedy surrounding Lonnie this makes the Championship extra special," Coach Reed said. "It's not often you get two back-to-back pitching performances like this in tournament play. Coop was in a zone out there in the semis and Witczak got stronger and more dominate as the game went on." Witczak was quick to credit his defense in the win mentioning key plays made by Lane around the bag at first in the final inning as the rain poured down.
The Championship Win by the Rebels gives them a berth in the Mid-Atlantic States on September 25-27th at Chancellor's Run Regional Park in Great Mills, MD. Additionally, the WBA announced that the Rebels also won a paid birth in the Mid-Atlantic Nationals that will be held on October 10-11th at Laurel Spring Park in LaPlata, MD.

Only the Frederick Hustlers, Md Cardinals, and Md Orioles had better records than the Rebels over that period of games. Head Coach, Sherman Reed attributes the team's turn around to solid second half pitching performances from Brandon Hovel, Andrew Killom, and Dylan Cooper. Said Reed, "we've always had capable pitchers on this team and it was just a matter of time before they realized how effective they could be at this level of play. Killom really aided the late charge by his dominate performances from the bull pen." Reed went on to praise his solid in-field defense that consisted of Hovel, Killom, Devin Beverly and Kylen Lane. The Yankee Rebels hope that this late season surge will be enough to qualify for League Post Season Play, along with success in Meriden, Connecticut at the upcoming Silver City Grand Slam Tournament July 3rd - 5th.

STRONG FLORIDA PITCHING SLOWS REBELS RUSTY BATS!!
The Yankee Rebels 16s Find Florida Pitching Hard to Overcome. The Yankee Rebels 16s opened the 2004 season with erratic play in Cocoa, Florida. The two month break from competitive play was evident as the Yankee Rebels squandered several opportunities to advance to the metal round. For example, the rebels went into the seventh inning with a 5-2 lead over the Space Meterors (the eventual tournament winners), before losing 7-5. However, the experience was invaluable as the hitters faced consistent good pitching with most guys hitting the radar gun in the 80's. Also, the baseball staff for the University of Florida was present, and requested written information on Rebel players. Congratulations to new comer William Turlington, who led the team in hitting in Fall Baseball and the Cocoa, Florida Tournament.
