Callahan 1st in greco, 5th in freestyle
Kevin Callahan, a Baldwin youth wrestler, became a Triple All-American by placing 5th in the freestyle division of the USA Wrestling Kids National Freestyle/Greco-Roman competition held in Fresno, California, on July 5-8. He came up just short of winning the "Triple Crown." He won a folkstyle national title in April and won the greco-roman division of the national tournament in Fresno. He ended up 5th in the freestyle competition. The four placers ahead of him in his freestyle bracket did not compete in the greco competition.
The prestigious Triple Crown is given to any youth wrestler who can win all three styles in the same year. Last year, there were 11 Triple Crown winners from around the country and one from Kansas. Callahan is the first wrestler from Baldwin to be a Triple All-American by placing in the top 6 in all three styles in the same year.
Callahan competed in the Novice age division (11-12 yrs.) at 105 pounds. For more information on the tournament, go to either of these sites:
