Mason, Callahan double champs at FS/GR State
Five Baldwin Bulldog wrestlers competed in the Kansas State
Freestyle/Greco-Roman Championships in Junction City last Saturday.
Two grapplers, Gabe Mason and Alan Callahan, came away as "double champions"
as they won gold in both styles in their weight categories. Mason went 6-0
on the day, while Alan Callahan was 2-0. Mason twice defeated Shawnee
Mission North's Artie Squire, who was a national folkstyle runner-up this
past season and a 6A state qualifier. Mason was a Kids State runner-up this
past year, while Alan Callahan has placed third for two years in a row at
Kids State.
Baldwin also won another gold as Kevin Callahan won first in greco-roman,
winning all his matches by technical fall. Kevin Callahan placed third in
freestyle. He went 7-1 overall for the day. Callahan was a fourth-place
finisher in the high school state tournament this past year, going 42-6. He
is the first freshman to place at state in BHS history.
The two other Baldwin competitors also placed, as Brandon Reed won silver in
greco-roman, and Josh Hanson finished in fourth place in a very tough
bracket in freestyle. Hanson was a fourth-place finisher at Kids State this
past season, and Reed was a starting 275-pounder for the BHS varsity team.
Overall, "Team Baldwin" went 17-8 in all matches wrestled.
By placing in the cadet division, Mason and Kevin Callahan both earned a
spot on Team Kansas for the Cadet National Duals, which will be held in
Kansas City, Missouri, from June 23-27. Last year, 36 states entered teams,
and Kansas has finished in the top eight for six years in a row in
greco-roman.
By placing second in his bracket, Reed earned a spot on Team Kansas for the
Cadet National Tournament to be held in Fargo, North Dakota, in July.
