Baldwin wrestlers learn from Rulon Gardner
Eight Baldwin wrestlers attended the Quest For Gold wrestling camp at Washburn Rural High School in Topeka from June 4-6, learning techniques from one of the sports biggest names. . .Olympic heavyweight champion Rulon Gardner.
Attending the camp were Sean Potter, Sam Hinton, Gabe Mason, Adam Canterbury, Sam Coffey, and Alan Callahan. Tress Potter and Chase Abel attended on the final day.
Gardner shocked the wrestling world in the Sydney Olympics when he did what no wrestler had been able to do since 1984, defeat three-time Olympic gold medalist Alexander Karelin from Russia. Gardner won a 1-0 overtime decision.
He recently survived a brush with death as he was stranded overnight for 17 hours in 25 below weather in the Wyoming mountains after a snowmobiling mishap. He suffered severe frostbite and had to have a toe amputated. Gardner must miss this year's world championships, but vows to return next summer and attempt to win another Olympic gold medal in 2004.
