Bakersfield Starlings,
an affiliate of Starlings Volleyball USA.
Nothing you really LOVE
is hard work ...
No matter how much
you SWEAT!
MISSION STATEMENT
To provide the equal opportunity for girls from diverse, lower socioeconomic environments to train and compete at USA Volleyball's Junior Olympic level; to encourage teamwork, health, positive life skills, and academic achievement; to establish member clubs throughout the nation that are community-based and self-sustaining.
Philosophy
The Starlings believe in supporting the participation of girls in volleyball because:· Girls who participate in sports are 92% less likely to get involved with drugs.
· Girls who participate in sports are 80% less likely to have an unwanted pregnancy.
· Girls who participate in sports are three times more likely to graduate from high school.
· Girls who participate in sports have a higher level of self esteem.
The sport of volleyball is ideal for the inner cities and rural areas of America—inexpensive, non-contact, and inherently a social game requiring communication and cooperation. Girls playing volleyball in the United States outnumber boys, 12 to 1. It is truly the “girl’s game” of America.
Starlings Volleyball Clubs excludes no girl due to financial hardship. While junior club volleyball dues around the nation are often exclusionary, Starlings club dues are dramatically minimized and some girls are provided work opportunities in exchange for monthly dues. Additionally, all Starlings clubs are required to raise part of their budget through fundraising.
Each individual Starlings club is encouraged to adopt a mentoring program to nurture personal growth and educational achievement.

*PLEASE SEE THE MAY ISSUE OF VOLLEYBALL MAGAZINE WHERE THEY HAVE AN ARTICLE DEDICATED TO THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF COACH NOEMI "NEMO" PEREZ
It is with deep sadness that I must inform you of the tragic loss of our own COACH NOEMI PEREZ.
Coach Perez (Nemo) was killed by a drunk driver on Sunday, she was 18 years old. She graduated in 2008 from Arvin High School. She was returning to Arvin after spending the day studying at CSUB, where she was attending.
Nemo was an original Bakersfield Starling, starting the program at just 13 years old. She was active coaching our Jr. Starlings, Arvin Starlings and currently as the 14u Noemi coach.
We are devastated by the loss of this beautiful, positive, and productive young woman. Please pray for her family as they are somehow dealing with this horrific tragedy.
Please bear with us as this is a deeply personal loss for the coaches, staff and particularly for the 18u girls. Nemo has been a part of our family for many years. I will get info out to you as soon as I can.
Johnitta
Memorial T-shirts are now available. All proceeds will go directly to Coach Nemo's family and to establish a scholarship in her name and memory. These T-shirts are being offered to all of our Starlings clubs around the county. It is our hope that we can improve her family's living standard and that of deserving young women through a scholarship as a part of her legacy.
*Click on the following link and turn it in to your coach, along with payment by Feb 21, 2009. Thank you for your support.
