3. AIA: This is the local state clinic for highschool umpires. It is mandatory for anyone who wants to do high school.
Before the high school season begins Region II puts on 6 classroom sessions and 6 field sessions. (One class and one field per week) The classroom sessions cover rules, basic mechanics, and other matters of interest. The field sessions put the mechanics into practice. After the 6 weekly training sessions are completed, everyone must participate in at least one high school scrimmage game before the actual season begins.
Region II and AIA have a progression by which umpires move up to the certified level. Any umpire who wishes to do high school games, and has prior umpiring experience (preferably high school experience) from another state is placed in a category 5 status. Once they are reviewed during the early part of the season they may be moved up to a high level based upon the judgment of the umpire training coordinator. If you have in-state experience you will probably start at a level 4. Then you will usually move up one level each year until you reach level 1 which is their certified level. If they feel your skills are better than average they could move you up to a higher level much faster.
Level 1 certified umpires do varsity games, and if they agree to it, they can do JV games. Level 2 can do JV and varsity games. Level 3-5 can only do JV and freshman games.
High school is a different animal from Little League, but the mechanics are all the same. For those that are interested in umpiring through AIA to do high school games can contact AIA directly at 602-385-3818.
The nice thing about doing high school games is that it is a nice way to pay for, or upgrade, needed equipment. Freshman and JV games pay $33. For recomendations email Cliff
4. Arizona Umpiring Academy: The last clinic was a 2 and a half day event at Peoria Sports Complex. The clinic consist of extensive plate work and field work. We were in the cages at least 6 times. The also had a Major League Umpire helping with the training. They can be reached at AZ Umpire Academy For information or recomendations email Russ or Bob
5. Jim Evan's Desert Classic: This is put on by Jim Evan's Professional Umpire School. The clinic is held in November. For direct information go to their website at The Academy Home Page For information or recomendations email Bob or Cliff
6. Western States Umpire Combine Camp: The Western Baseball League (WBL) is an 8 team independent professional league based mostly in California though they are adding 8 new teams in 2002 in the northwest. One of the purposes of the camp was to recruit new umpires.
In addition to the Western Baseball League, the following Division 1 Collegiate Umpire supervisors were present to look for umpires for entrance into their specific conference:
#1 Mountain West Conference
#2 Western Athletic Conference
#3 Pacific 10 Conference
#4 Big West Conference
#5 West Coast Conference
They advertised this as the first camp put on by the Western States Umpire Combine, but it is the 3rd effort for the Western Baseball League. It looks like it might very well be an annual event here in the Phoenix area.
Those needing additional information can contact Dan Perugini, supervisor of umpires for the Western Baseball League at 818-951-3892(mscooch14@aol.com) or Tom Hiler, Western States Umpire Combine at 1-800-867-4327 (umpirecamp@honigs.com).For recomendations email Cliff
If you are one of our members and have other clinics you would recomend please email the Webmaster. None of our members has received any compensation for these recommendations, (But we are not above and donations to the kids of our leagues.)
