EXTRA! EXTRA! EXTRA!.....

Yes San Pedro, the AYSO EXTRA Program is coming to Region 6 this Fall 2014!

What is AYSO EXTRA?

AYSO EXTRA is a program established by AYSO for interested children who would like to play soccer at a more competitive level. AYSO EXTRA is an attractive alternative to club soccer programs. It is much less expensive than club soccer and maintains AYSO core philosophies, everyone plays, balance teams, open registration, positive coaching, good sportsmanship and player development.

The EXTRA Program begins practice in August and starts competitive play in early September with weekly games against other EXTRA teams from other nearby regions. Most games will be played on Sunday. The program will continue through the middle of December, with playoffs taking place in January and February.

The EXTRA program runs parallel to the primary core (fall) program. If your child makes an EXTRA team, they cannot play both, EXTRA and primary core (fall) programs. Our Area(1F) decided to use the side by side relationship between EXTRA and primary core (fall), as oppose to a concurrent system, which would have allowed our children to play on both, teams in EXTRA and primary core (fall).

How can my child get on an EXTRA team?

Players will be selected after participating in a series of tryouts. To participate in EXTRA, you must be registered in the regions primary core (fall) program. Tryouts will be conducted over several weeks starting in May. The tryouts will be competitive, consisting of game like situations and will be organized and conducted by a qualified third party group that is not directly connected to Region 6. Coaches will assist in tryouts and player selection, but will not have the final say about players selected for EXTRA teams. Upon completion of the tryouts, the EXTRA selection group will select the EXTRA teams.

How many EXTRA teams will be formed?

We would like to form U10, U12, & U14 teams for both boys and girls; however, a lot goes into deciding which teams we will end up forming. First and foremost, we will need to secure qualified coaches for each individual age group, for each individual gender. At the minimum, a coach will need to been certified to coach at the age level they are applying. The preferred criteria is to have all coaches certified to coach the age level above the age group they apply to coach in the EXTRA program. The next step involves the EXTRA selection group approving a coach for the selected age group. It there is not an approved coach for an age/gender group, no team will be formed for that age/gender group. Lastly, if we cannot put together a competitive team for an age/gender group, no team will be formed for that group.

What can I do to ensure a successful start of San Pedro’s EXTRA Program?

VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER, VOLUNTEER! As you all know, AYSO is a volunteer based organization. The EXTRA program cannot be successful to the detriment of our primary core (fall) program. The strength of our primary core program will determine the strength of our EXTRA program, not the other way around. Each family that accepts an invitation for their son or daughter to play on an EXTRA team will be expected to sign a Parent Commitment form. There are two key points on this form; 1) by accepting an invitation to play on an EXTRA team, you also agree that you child will not be participating in another sport or team that will conflict with the EXTRA team. 2) VOLUNTEER OBLIGATIONS! By allowing your child to play on an EXTRA team, you will also be agreeing to volunteer at a minimum 10 hours back to the primary core (fall) program. The best way you can support the primary core (fall) program is to become a referee. Refereeing is the area our region needs the most volunteer support. By being a referee one game a week, you would fulfill you volunteer obligation over the course of the ten week season.

What would it cost for my child to play on an EXTRA team?

A portion of your EXTRA fee will be the fee required to register your child for the primary core (fall) program. For example, April 1-May 31 the registration fee for one child is $130. The registration fee for the period June 1-July31 is $150. We have not determined yet how much the additional fees will be; it is estimated that it will be an additional $200 - $300 dollars.

The added fees will go towards uniforms, field usage, and professional trainers. These fees will only cover the fall program. If the EXTRA team wishes to stay together and play in tournaments throughout the season; additional fees will be needed for those events.

I hope this brief introduction to the EXTRA program will answer some of your questions and generate many more. In the next few weeks we will have a more comprehensive explanation of how the EXTRA program will run in region 6, posted on our website, with times and dates of tryouts and pricing. We will also have player and coaches’ application forms as well.

You can always email me at aysor6extracoordinator@cox.net with questions about the EXTRA program.

Thank you,
