FORMER PIRANHAS GARY OWEN CHUMMING IT UP WITH SHAQ! ! !
A "Remember When..." column?!?!? What the heck is that all about you may ask.

Well, maybe it's the fact that I'll be reaching my 10th year (next year) playing flag football. In that time, I've played a lot of football at all levels out at Robb Field. As you can already tell from my website, I have tremendous "pride" in my team and the accomplishments we made through the years.

But, that "pride" isn't limited to just the Piranhas. I have a lot of pride for Robb Football period! We have had some outstanding teams and individual talent out there that can and have competed with the best 8 Man Flag Football Teams in the country. I still think that the best era of Robb Field football was during the mid-to-late 90s when all divisions were soooo freakin deep that getting a win was like winning a championship. For example, I remember our Elite Division one year having Five time AFA National Champions Swarm, It's On, RAGE, Attack, Damage, Fun-N-Gun, Fresh Connection Posse, Hit Em Up, Paradise...the list goes on and on. There were/are some great teams in the B Division too-Air Manila, QRUSH, Body Count, Ambush, Renegades, STORM, Sunshine Company...again the list goes on and on.

This column could be a forum to look back on those great teams of yesterday as well as today. I ENCOURAGE any and ALL teams to simply email me there stories, along with a team photo or action shots to make this column really worth reading. I don't mind the work since this is a "FUN" hobby for me.

Anyway, I am starting this article off as follows:

"Remember When..."
--------------------------------------------

Comedian Gary Owen played wide receiver played for the Piranhas back in 1997-1998? Yes no joke! Former BET Host Gary Owen was on the first Piranhas 8 Man Football Championship team. Back then he was just Gary Owen a military policeman for the Navy, and aspiring to be a comedian.

More than half the team went to watch and cheer Gary onto victory as he won "Funniest Black Comedian in San Diego" contest. He later went on to bigger and better things as he beat out 40 plus contestants to earn the hosting spot for Comic View. According to his biography (from his website), Gary had the highest rating in "Comic View's" ten year history. He is currently touring the country, and also was in Jaime Foxx's movie "Held Up". Check out his website for tour information & his latest projects that are in the works, and to order his CD.

Yes Gary was just as talented on the field as he is on the stage. This "white-boy" had GAME-height 6' 3", decent speed, possession type receiver who made the P-House of Fame. He was instrumental in helping the team to win it's first 8 Man Championsip in 1997 out at the North Claremont League.

Gary would always bust jokes in the huddle to make us laugh in pressure situations. He would say such things as, "I may not catch a lot of balls, but I'll run the motha f-in safety off like you wouldn't believe!"

If you happen to bump into him and you yell out "Who's House?" He'll know what you're talking about!
