Saturday, July 19 COACH WELCOMES ALL
I would like to welcome parents and players to the 2008
AVENGERS! My name is Keith James. It’s my privilege to be your Head Coach this season. This will be my 19th
year as a coach in Arizona Pop Warner. I’m very excited about the upcoming
season and I hope you are too.
I’m THRILLED to have my entire 2007 staff returning this season. Defensive
Coordinator Brian Andrews, Line Coach PJ Tyler and Assistant Line Coach Nick
Graham are back for another year. Handling
Equipment Manager duties and Assistant Offensive Coach will once again be Scott Murray. Vince Wardman
will return as Receiver’s Coach and Team Trainer as well as Assistant Defensive
Coach and Statistician Steve Thompson. New to the staff will be Linebacker
Coach Bernard Jenkins and Coach Trainee Nick Michieli. Returning to the vital roles of
Business Manager and Team Mom are Mark Kerr and Wendy Thompson respectively.
Saturday, July 19 HELP WANTED
From the desk of Coach Keith...
Hey Mom and Dad! Keep in mind that we will be required to supply a crew to work the yard markers during home games. Perhaps you’d like to be on the sidelines where the action is. It’s the closest you can get to a “zebra” outside of a zoo. Just let Mr. Kerr know you’re interested!
Saturday, July 19 BUT IT'S A DRY HEAT...
You bet it is! Players, it is vital that you drink lots of water. We will be doing a lot of conditioning the first 3 weeks of practice. Don’t become a victim. Juice, soda, or Kool-Aid doesn't count. Those contain sugar. Your body will treat them differently. Sometimes you just need a nice, tall, ice-cold glass of H20! Leg cramps are never any fun. This is especially true in the middle of the night. Eating bananas or tomatoes, both of which are rich in potassium, will help reduce your chance of getting cramps in your leg muscles. Just a little food for thought.
Saturday, July 19 FUND RAISING: We can't do it Without You
Each tackle team must raise just under $3000. This is no small task. We will be seeking help from local businesses. Mom, Dad, perhaps your employer may be willing to make a tax-deductible donation. In addition to a car wash, we should look at other options as well. In the past we had very successful yard sales with donated items. If you have a suggestion, by all means speak up! Everyone needs to take an active role in our fund raising efforts. The sooner we get this taken care of, the better.
Saturday, July 19 And Finally...
To my players. Winning is not our only goal. The coaches will do all we can to prepare you each week to play and be successful. It is our MISSION to make sure you are a better ball player when you leave us, than when you came. Our job is to make sure you have fun and learn the game. Winning will come from working together in games and helping each other in practice. It’s going to take hard work. Each of you must realize how important you are to your teammates. The only way you can win is as a team. ALWAYS encourage and support each other. Everyone plays, nobody quits.
Sunday, April 17 FOOD FOR THOUGHT
From the desk of Coach Keith...
"If necessity is the mother of invention, then desperation is the father."
In 2001 I began running the single wing offense. It remains the single smartest move I've made in my years as a head coach. It's exciting, deceptive and powerful. Every player is involved. And for youth football, that's a BIG plus.
"If your players fail to do something correctly in a game, the reason is simple. You didn't teach it, or you taught it incorrectly. These kids weren’t born knowing how to play the game."
Each season, my staff and I try to produce well-rounded players. We do our best to put our players in a position to be successful. Avengers Football is hard hitting, and aggressive on both sides of the ball. My players don't do things in a game just because we "tell" them to. They understand WHY they are supposed to them. I don't want robots. We want them to think on their feet in during the game. They can't achieve that without proper preparation.
The following quotes come from the documentary "Still Running" by Steve Blahitka: "In 1906, Pop Warner invented the single-wing; a football formation that did not use a quarterback position." "For four decades the single wing ruled football with its power and deception. "Knute Rockne, Jim Thorpe(above), Red Grange(below), and Notre Dame's Four Hoursemen are all part of the single wing legacy."
Red Grange: The Galloping Ghost.
