Double Headers hosts its inaugural invitational tournament

Our 10U travel team - Double Headers hosted its inaugural invitational tournament on July 31st - August 2nd.

The tournament was a great success with 5 teams participating.  There was much anticipation for this tournament and the weather cooperated for the most part.  We did get a little rain on Saturday that forced us to push the 3pm game to Sunday.  But Sunday was great baseball playing weather.

Our thanks go out to all of the teams that participated:  Grayslake All Stars- Antioch Jr Sequoits- and our own 10U ATYB Double Headers.

A Special thanks goes out to the Lake Villa Defenders who took 1st place in the tournament and to the Algonquin Storm who ended up in 2nd place.  It was a closely contested battle between the two teams with Lake Villa taking an early 4 - 1 lead.  But Algonquin battled back to take a 6 - 5 lead going into the bottom of the 6th.  Lake Villa put together a two out rally and won the game 7 - 6.

Both teams had very complimentary comments about the tournament.

From Tom Jones of the Lake Villa Defenders

On behalf of the Lake Villa Defenders, coaches, players and parents, we would like to say "thanks" for hosting a great tournament.  The parents and players had a wonderful time.  Please extend our appreciation to the umpire crew as they too did an outstanding job.  The players were so geeked to see THREE umpires in the Championship Game.  That was awesome - they did a great job.  Thanks again for hosting and extending your hospitality.

Tom Jones

Coach, Lake Villa Defenders

From Rich Riedel of the Algonquin Storm

I just wanted to thank you and your staff for hosting this tournament.  We played in 7 tournaments this year.  Your tournament was run as well as any other tournament we played in.  I know your umpires took some heat from some teams, but I will say they called great games for us.  They were fair and consistent through out.
Your field guys did a great job with keeping the fields playable.  Especially after the rains yesterday, the fields were in great shape for us to play on.  Great job!
I know it takes a tremendous amount of work to host a tournament.  You did well.  I hope to see you next year.
Thanks again,
Rich Riedel

Wood vs. Aluminum

There is a growing controversy surrounding wood vs. aluminum bats.  There has been a bill introduced to the
Illinois General Assembly to outlaw the use of aluminum bats for any baseball & softball games played in the state
of Illinois involving children under the age of 13.  In an effort to make our environment safe and fun for the kids,
beginning in the 2008 season, ATYB will add wood bats to our Boys leagues as an alternative to aluminum bats.
Keep in mind, we do not plan to prohibit the use of aluminum bats for the Pinto or Mustang leagues, unless the bill
has been passed into law during the season.

We have prohibited the use of aluminum bats in both the Boys Bronco & Pony leagues. Keep up with the status of this bill at

http://www.ilga.gov/legislation/billstatus.asp?DocNum=4140&GAID=9&GA=95&DocTypeID=HB&LegID=34247&SessionID=51

We are currently evaluating what brand of wood bat will work best.  We are looking at the following manufacturers:

Metal Wood

 Viper
