Frequently Asked Questions
 Season and Team Questions

1. How long is AVVC's club season?

Our season lasts from the beginning of Dec. through the end of May.  National teams that have won the right to go to Nationals will play through the beginning of July.

 2. What is the difference between National, Regional and Leapfrog teams?
  • A National Team has the goals of competing strongly among the top teams in the nation and of earning a berth at the USAV Junior Nationals Championship. National level teams will normally participate in 2-3 high level tournaments outside of the GEVA Region.  Currently, we have one national team for the 15, 16, 17, and 18 ages.
  • A Regional Team is a team whose main competition will be among the mid-level teams in the GEVA, Keystone Region.
  • A Leapfrog Team is a team comprised of young athletes new to volleyball who are under 12 years old. Focus is on skill development.
3. Can my daughter make a National team if she wasn’t on one last year?

Yes, AVVC’s teams are not set in stone.  Every player has to earn their spot each and every year.

4. Why don’t you publish the practice schedule and coaching assignments before tryouts?
You can thank New Jersey’s rules for that.  New Jersey high school coaches can’t coach players from their team during the off-season, and since some of our coaches are high school coaches we can’t assign our coaches to teams until after teams are formed so we don’t have any conflict with that rule.  Practice schedules are directly tied to that since we have to work with the availability of our coaches.

5.  How many practices a week do the teams have?

Regional and National teams have usually two 2 hour practices a week with the National teams usually picking up a third practice.   December is a light practice month due to the holidays. Leapfrog teams practice one to two practices a week.

6. Where do the teams practice?

The East and West Regional teams usually play at the locations in their area, with the National teams usually practicing at the two central locations
  • EAST practice sites are at: St. Mary’s Church in Rahway, and Union County College in Cranford.
  • WEST practice site are at: Hunterdon Central High School, North Hunterdon High School, and Washington Annex School.
  • CENTRAL locations are at: the NY Boy’s Club at Camp Cromwell, and Watchung Regional High School.  The East and West Regional teams usually play at the locations in their area, with the National teams usually practicing at the two central locations.

Tournament Questions

 1. How many tournaments will my daughter’s team play in?

National and Regional teams will play between 9-11 tournaments during a season.  The Regional teams will have two 2-3 day (overnight stay) tournaments, and the National teams will have 4-5, 2-3 day (overnight stay) tournaments.

2. Do  parents have to attend the tournaments?

No.  You don’t have to attend, but you do need to make sure that your daughter has a ride to and from the tournament.  Please check the 1 day tournament packing list to kinow what to send with her.

3. My daughter has her license, can she drive to tournaments?

No.  Your daughter can drive to practice, but she will need to drive with an adult to the tournament venues.

4. Where are most of the tournaments?

GEVA (Garden Empire Volleyball Association) and Six Pak tournaments are located in New York and New Jersey.  KRVA (Keystone Regional Volleyball Association) tournaments are in Pennsylvania.  Directions to the sites can be found on our website. Most of our tournaments are within a 2 hour drive.

5. How long do most tournaments last?

Most tournaments start anywhere from 8-9am and can last till the afternoon – early evening.  Longer (2-3 day) tournaments typically have a morning wave and an afternoon wave.  Teams will play in one of the waves, but not typically both.

 6. If I am not there, who will watch over my daughter?
Each team is required to have a Team Representative, 1-2 Chaperones, and at least one Coach.  At tournament venues, the Coach has control of the team.  For overnight tournaments, the Chaperone(s) is the contact person to watch over the entire team while they are not at the venue.
