The Atlanta Vipers (Berry) qualifed for ASA 18-Gold Nationals in their first attempt by claiming the Region 4 Championship in Cary, NC. The Vipers opened the double elimination tournament by defeating the Angels Gold 7-0 on Friday night.
Saturday was comeback day for the Vipers. Facing the always tough Easton Elite, the Vipers trailed 3-0 in the 2nd and 4-3 in the 5th before plating 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th to secure a hard-fought 7-4 victory. The Vipers then faced the Georgia Knockout, who jumped out to a 5-1 lead after 2 innings. Showing tremendous resiliency, the Vipers battled back with 1 run in the 3rd and 3 runs in the 4th to tie the game and then erupted for 4 more runs in the bottom of the 5th to seal the victory and a matchup against the defending Gold National Champion East Cobb Bullets on Sunday morning.
The Bullets and the Vipers engaged in a defensive battle with no score through 5 innings, before the Vipers exploded for 3 runs in the top of the 6th inning. The Vipers added 1 more in the 7th to seal the deal, winning 4-0 and claiming the 1st berth to ASA Gold Nationals.
Atlanta Vipers (Seamon/Dean) then defeated the Bullets in the loser's bracket finals 2-0 in an ITB to claim the 2nd Gold Berth. Congrats to both teams for sweeping the Regional. A great weekend for the Viper family - both berths secured in the first qualifier made for a sweet ride home from NC.

The Atlanta Vipers finished 4th at ASA Nationals, capping off an incredible year. After opening with pool play victories over High Voltage (TX) and American Pastime (CA) on Monday and Tuesday, the Vipers began bracket play on Wednesday against our neighbors, the Birmingham Vipers (AL). After jumping up early 1-0, a rain delay / rainstorm changed the momemtum of the game and the Birmingham Vipers took advantage, securing a 3-1 win; dropping the Atlanta Vipers into the loser's bracket.
The Atlanta Vipers then began an amazing run through the loser's bracket, winning 9 straight games before succumbing to the Corona Angels (CA) and finishing 4th out of 83 teams. Bouncing back from their defeat on Wednesday, the Vipers rallied with tightly contested victories over the Bayside Blues (MD), 3-1 and So Cal 3D (CA) 3-2 on Thursday. Friday afternoon brought a rematch with the Texas Fusion - Mork, the team that eliminated the Vipers from the Hall of Fame Tournament in June. Enduring winds of up to 50 mph, the Vipers prevailed 7-4, setting up an unfortunate matchup against our sister team, Atlanta Vipers - Dean.
Rains pushed the game from Friday night to Saturday morning, and the two teams came out slugging. When all the dust settled, Vipers-Berry prevailed 7-5, beginning an unbelievable Saturday run. The Vipers swept through four more games on the day, defeating the American Athletics (CA) 10-0, the OC Wildcats (CA) 4-3, the Desert Thunder (AZ) 6-2, and the Mize Diamonds (CA) 7-3.
After Saturday's marathon, the Vipers returned on Sunday morning and defeated the So Cal Hurricanes, 2-1, in a thrilling finish, before finally falling to the Corona Angels.
The Vipers proudly represented Georgia with our 4th place finish at Nationals, our Region Championship, and an overall record of 91-31-2 for the 2007-08 season.
Having played in the last 5 ASA Nationals, the Vipers move up to 16U in 2008-09, setting our sights on Sioux Falls, SD and the 2009 16U ASA Nationals.

The Vipers scratched out 3 in the 12th to prevail 4-1. As one of a very few 1st year 12U teams to qualify for this year's "A" Nationals, the Herricanes battled hard and enjoyed the experience. We saw the best and will begin our 2nd year at 12U with a goal to return to Nationals in Bloomington, IN hoping to improve upon our T-13th finish in 10U Nationals as a 2nd year team in 2004.

Sunday, June 26
Herricanes 5th in ISA State
In one of the stongest fields of the year, the Cherokee Herricanes finished 5th in the ISA State Tournament at Moseley Park in Stockbridge. The Herricanes opened with a 3-2 victory over the Brookwood Blaze, defeating a team we had not seen at all this year after numerous battles last year (although with smiles on our faces we weren't sure whether to call them the Brookwood Flames or the Murphey Candler Blaze). Next, the Herricanes defeated another tough nemesis, the West Cobb Xplosion, by the same 3-2 score. Coming back on Sunday in the winner's bracket semi-finals, the Herricanes were defeated by the Collins Hill Ultimate Eages 4-1. Falling into the loser's bracket, the Herricanes battled valiantly against the Middle Georgia Thunder before falling 3-2 in an International Tie Breaker (ITB).

A subsequent heart breaking 1 run loss to the West Cobb Xplosion left the Herricanes with a 3rd place finish.
Sunday, June 12
ASA Hall of Fame Tournament
The Cherokee Herricanes ventured to Oklahoma City, OK to the ASA Hall of Fame Tournament, coming home with a disappointing 1-2 record but memories for a lifetime. Our original plans called for us to arrive late Wednesday evening, but once Michigan and UCLA were forced to a 3rd game in the Women's College World Series, we changed our travel plans. Leaving at 4:30am, we arrived at the stadium in time for final game. The girls appeared on ESPN several times and had a great time. Our tournament experience was memorable as well. We won a game agains the St. Louis Esprit and lost to the Texas Glory and the Oklahoma Lady Sooners. We hit and pitched well, but had butterfingers on defense. We knew that all three games were winnable, but we didn't play well enough defensively to win. Our 3rd game was in the Stadium where the College World Series was played and the girls got to see their names on the scoreboard and hear their names announced over the PA. A great experience and wonderful preparation for future trips to this tournament.

Saturday began with a heartbreaking loss in the bottom of 7th, 4-3, to the East Cobb Bullets after the Herricanes rallied to tie the game in the top of 7th. A 9-1 win over the Georgia Venom began the trek through the loser's bracket before the Herricanes lost to the Georgia Xtreme Purple 5-3 for an early exit. Five unearned runs given up to the Xtreme Purple in the first two innings was too much for the Herricanes to overcome. The Herricanes 1st year 12U record stands at 75-29 after the May Classic.

In seven spring tournaments the Herricanes have five 2nd place finishes to go with two 5th place results. Overall (fall and spring), in fourteen tournaments, the Herricanes have three wins, a co-championship, six 2nd place finishes, a 4th place finish and three 5th place finishes. The Herricanes lost a pool play game to the Georgia Velocity and then lost their first double elimination bracket game to the East Gwinnett Diamonds, falling into the loser's bracket. Down 2-0 after three innings to the Mountain Park Panthers, it looked like an early trip home for the Herricanes. The tide turned in the top of the fourth, as the Herricanes exploded for 4 runs en route to a 7-2 victory. The Herricanes got even with the Georgia Velocity, sending them home with a hard fought 6-5 victory. The Herricanes steak continued with an impressive 12-2 victory over the Murphey Candler Flames, followed by a tough 3-1 win over the Tornadoes to earn a spot in the championship against the Lady Nuggets.
The Herricanes knew they would have to win to force the "if" game shootout and worked a 2-2 tie after two innings into a 5-2 victory with 2 runs in the 4th and a single run in the 6th. The Herricanes were primed and ready to go into the "shootout" but the clock struck midnight and a park curfew caused the tournament director to declare the Herricanes and the Lady Nuggets co-champions.

A Fastpitch Softball Player's Prayer
God grant me wisdom to tell a strike from a ball,
to know where to throw and never to fall.
Keep me always in the base line running straight and true
and I'll look for your sign to stretch one into two.
God give me vision to see every pitch,
so if a player needs help, then I will see which.
Let me always hustle so I'll be at my best
and take pride in myself in sports and the rest.
God be my strength when I throw the ball
when I'm far from home plate or against a wall.
So I never miss a base please guide my feet,
bring me home safely so my job is complete.
When I help younger players let me always give praise,
so they'll see you in me in all of my ways.
God please guide our coach to be fair and smart,
to teach us to be good; let it come from his heart.
Let me take a loss just as well as a win,
to do any less is surely a sin.
As long as I can play let me make my parents proud,
as proud as I am when they yell my name out loud.
However my games end let me always have fun
and if Heaven has All Stars I want to be one.
When my games here are over and my seasons are done,
let me play on your team just like your son.
Amen

The Fastpitch Player
The Fastpitch Travelball Player
At one time she looked cute as a button dressed in pink with ponytails.
She had tea parties with her stuffed animals and dolls and helped Mom bake cookies.
She has been, and will always be Daddy's and Mommy's little girl.
Today the fastpitch player still has the same little girl attributes.
The only difference is she looks cute in her sliders and shorts.
If she's wearing ribbons in her hair, they are the team colors.
She has become Mommy and Daddy's little hitter.
The fastpitch player is proud of how dirty she can get.
On a normal family dinner outing, she takes up to an hour primping to get ready, and she still feels somewhat self-conscious.
However, between tournament games she'll strut into any restaurant with a streak of dirt across her face, ratted sweaty hair, a dirt stained shirt, bloody knees, and brown socks (they used to be white) with sandals with a toe sticking out, and yell, "Let's eat!"
The fastpitch player typically has an extensive wardrobe:
She has several old uniforms, which she has outgrown, but has not discarded because, well, you never know.
She has several hundred tee shirts and boxer shorts from camps, leagues, and tournaments around the country.
When her parents say wear something nice, she wears stuff from regional or national events.
The fastpitch player needs to get a scholarship, because her parents are broke spending thousands of dollars paying for camps, batting lessons, pitching lessons, catching lessons, hotel rooms, out to eat between tournament games, league fees, equipment, etc., etc....
The fastpitch player is a fierce competitor.
She is willing to stand 40' away from a pitcher and take a pitch with a measured reaction time that even a major league baseball player would struggle to hit.
She might only be 5'3" and 100 pounds (soaking wet), but she'll dig in at 3rd or 1st, 25 feet away from the batter and challenge them to drive one down her throat.
The fastpitch player has more spirit than any other sport.
She'll go home hoarse from cheering and rooting her team on into the final innings.
She plays the sport for all the right reasons, she loves the game.
She could spend the weekend watching TV or out at the mall with all her non-sport friends, because all her sport friends are at a tournament somewhere, but she chooses to spend her weekend in the 100 degree heat, waiting to get in the game.
The fastpitch player is diligent and hard working. She knows the value of hard work.
She understands that you get out of something what you put in.
She is competitive and doesn't give up very easily.
She learns teamwork and spirit.
Most of all she learns to respect all, but fear none.
