Atlanta Vipers (Berry)
The Atlanta Vipers - A Commitment to Pursue Excellence
Welcome to the home of the Atlanta Vipers (Berry) Girls Fastpitch Softball team - comprised of 2011 and 2012 graduates striving for our 7th consecutive trip to ASA "A" Nationals. We are based in Woodstock, GA, a suburb on the northwest side of Atlanta.
Prior to the fall of 2005, this Vipers team was known as the Hobgood or Cherokee Herricanes. The Hobgood Herricanes began as an 8U All-Star team in the summer of 2002, competing in the ISA World Series at the end of summer.
In the 2002-03 season, the Herricanes moved up to 10U and finished their 1st year of travel ball with a 33-18-1 record, closing the year by winning the Georgia ASA Class B State Championship.
In 2003-04, the Herricanes stepped up to "A" ball; compiling an 82-24-1 record with nine tournament victories including an NASF World Series Championship. In August, 2004, the Herricanes capped off their 10U experience by going 4-2 and placing T-13th among 53 teams in the ASA Class A National Championship Finals in Tulsa, OK.
In 2004-05, the Cherokee Herricanes moved up to 12U and compiled a 104-51 record playing all "A" level ball. The Herricanes placed in the top five in 21 of 22 tournaments regionally, including five tournament victories and seven 2nd place finishes. The Herricanes capped off their 1st year 12U experience by winning the NASF World Series, finishing 5th in the ISA World Series and traveling to Aurora, CO to play in the ASA "A" Nationals (T-65th - 92 teams).
At the beginning of our 2nd year in 12U (2005-06), the Herricanes accepted an offer to join the prestigious Atlanta Vipers organization. Wearing new colors proudly, the Vipers finished with a 70-40 record including 4 tournament victories, an NSA State Championship, the ASA Hall of Fame Qualifier Championship, and a trip to the ASA Hall of Fame tournament for the 2nd straight year. The Vipers closed out their 12U experience by finishing T-17th (76 teams entered) at ASA "A" Nationals.
In our 1st year in 14U (2006-07), the Vipers played a tough 14A / 16A schedule, compiling a 70-51-3 record; including a victory in the fall Rip-It Elite tournament, a 2nd place finish in a Georgia Association berth tournament, and 5th place finishes in USFA State, ASA State, and the ASA Regional; capping our 1st year in 14U with a T-65th among 129 teams at ASA Nationals.
As a 2nd year 14U team (2007-08), the Vipers compiled a 91-31-2 record, including the Hall of Fame Qualifier Championship, the South Atlantic Region Championship, and the 16U USFA State Championship (co-champions with Vipers - Dean). The Vipers played in the Hall of Fame tournament for the 3rd time in four years, and capped off our 14U experience with a 4th place finish (83 teams) at ASA Nationals.
In our 1st year in 16U (2008-09), the Vipers compiled a 61-22-6 record, qualifying for ASA Nationals in the 1st Georgia qualifier and then focusing on exposure tournaments while playing a National Schedule. The Vipers participated in seven exposure tournaments, including the Gold Diamond (Chattanooga), Peach State, and Rising Stars events in the fall / winter; and the Scenic City 16's (TN), Dynamite (SC), Independence (CO), and Atlanta Legacy (GA) in the spring / summer. The Vipers capped off our 1st year in 16U with a T-33rd out of 164 teams at ASA Nationals.
For 2009-10, the Vipers look forward to the challenges and experiences that lie ahead; continuing our journey to play the best competition in the country through tournament play and exposure events, setting sights on College Station, TX and ASA 16U "A" Nationals in August, 2010.

The Atlanta Vipers finished T-33rd out of 164 teams at ASA Nationals, compiling a 6-2 overall record. The Vipers earned a #1 seed in our pool by winning games 10-2 and 3-0 against the Lake Breeze (WA) and Sorcerer (CA) on Monday.
After a day off and then rains that pushed games back another day, the Vipers opened bracket play on Thursday against the Germantown (TN) Red Devils. A nine inning, 2 ITB thriller ensued, with the Red Devils coming out on top 3-2. The resiliant Vipers bounced back later on Thursday with a 2-1 win over Lake Breeze (WA). With game times affected by rain delays, the Vipers played their 3rd game of the day at midnight and survived, defeating the Georgia Fire Black 92, 4-1 in an ITB.
Continuing their run through the losers' bracket, the Vipers won two games on Friday, defeating the Atlanta Worth Cobras, 4-1 and the Oregon Shockwave 8-3.
On Saturday morning, the Vipers run ended with a 4-2 defeat at the hands of the Southern Force (IL). The Vipers finished T-33rd to complete their 1st year, 16U journey.

A great weekend as we get ready for next week and ASA Nationals.

Vipers Finish 3rd in the Gold (Qualified) Bracket in ASA State
The Atlanta Vipers finished 3rd in the ASA State tournament at Lost Mountain and Al Bishop parks. Playing in the Gold bracket against all teams qualified for ASA Nationals produced wins over the Georgia Impact (Findlay), Georgia Impact (Watts), and the East Cobb Bullets (Schnute); but a tough loss in our 2nd game to the East Cobb Bullets (Fullem) and a loser's bracket finals loss to the Georgia Elite (Sampson) left the Vipers with a 3rd place finish. The Vipers look forward to joining all these teams at ASA Nationals.

Vipers Travel to Chattanooga Twice (HOF Qualifier and Scenic City 16's)
The Atlanta Vipers finally returned to some softball that was not cancelled by rains over the past two weekend; making two trips to Warner Park in Chattanooga.
First up was the ASA Hall of Fame Qualifier (May 29-31). The Vipers started off well, defeating the Georgia Fire (Berkhiser) and the Nashville Nighthawks before enduring close losses to the Tennessee Fury (Johnson) and the Frost Falcons '93. Congrats to the Georgia Impact Gold (Miller) and Worth Cobras for earning berths to the Hall of Fame tournament. Picutures are here -

The 2nd trip to Chattanooga was for the inaugural Scenic City 16's Exposure Tournament. A very successful start to the exposure part of our schedule.

Atlanta Vipers Qualify for ASA Nationals for the 6th consecutive year !!!
The Atlanta Vipers qualified for ASA Nationals for the 6th consecutive year by claiming one of the two berths available in the ASA 16U Double Play Classic at Al Bishop Park in Marietta. The Vipers defeated the Southern Scorchers on Friday night, and followed up with a win over the Southern Elite on Saturday, setting up an early matchup against an old foe - the East Cobb Bullets (Fullem). In an ESPN "Instant Classic" the two teams battled scoreless for six innings behind great pitching and even better defense, before the Vipers struck for two in the 7th to claim the victory to stay in the winners bracket. The Vipers followed with a hard fought 4-3 win over the Georgia Impact (Findlay) to setup a battle with the Georgia Elite (Hicks) with a berth on the line. The Elite prevailed 3-0 to claim the 1st berth leaving the Vipers to come back on Sunday with one more shot at the 2nd berth. The East Cobb Bullets (Fullem) battled their way back to face the Vipers again. In another great battle, the Vipers prevailed 2-0 to punch their ticket to Sioux Falls, SD and 16U Nationals in August.

Vipers 2nd in Season Opener
The Atlanta Vipers started the Spring, 2009 campaign with a 2nd place finish in the ASA Season Opener at Heritage Park in McDonough, GA. The Vipers opened with pool play victories over the Georgia Elite (Hicks) and the East Cobb Bullets (Fullem), earning a #1 seed into the double elimination bracket play. The Vipers then worked their way into the championship game with wins over the Rockdale Hysteria, Atlanta Worth Cobras, and the East Cobb Bullets (Fullem). The Bullets fought their way back to the championship game and forced the if game by defeating the Vipers. Both coaches agreed that we had seen enough of each other (3 games already - :)) and had enough ball for the 1st weekend of the spring, so we dropped the "if" game in favor of a ITB "shootout". In the 4th ITB, the Bullets prevailed 2-1. A good weekend and a solid start to the new season.

Vipers Finish 4th at ASA Nationals
The Atlanta Vipers finished 4th at ASA Nationals, capping off an incredible year. After opening with pool play victories over High Voltage (TX) and American Pastime (CA) on Monday and Tuesday, the Vipers began bracket play on Wednesday against our neighbors, the Birmingham Vipers (AL). After jumping up early 1-0, a rain delay / rainstorm changed the momemtum of the game and the Birmingham Vipers took advantage, securing a 3-1 win; dropping the Atlanta Vipers into the loser's bracket.
The Atlanta Vipers then began an amazing run through the loser's bracket, winning 9 straight games before succumbing to the Corona Angels (CA) and finishing 4th out of 83 teams. Bouncing back from their defeat on Wednesday, the Vipers rallied with tightly contested victories over the Bayside Blues (MD), 3-1 and So Cal 3D (CA) 3-2 on Thursday. Friday afternoon brought a rematch with the Texas Fusion - Mork, the team that eliminated the Vipers from the Hall of Fame Tournament in June. Enduring winds of up to 50 mph, the Vipers prevailed 7-4, setting up an unfortunate matchup against our sister team, Atlanta Vipers - Dean.
Rains pushed the game from Friday night to Saturday morning, and the two teams came out slugging. When all the dust settled, Vipers-Berry prevailed 7-5, beginning an unbelievable Saturday run. The Vipers swept through four more games on the day, defeating the American Athletics (CA) 10-0, the OC Wildcats (CA) 4-3, the Desert Thunder (AZ) 6-2, and the Mize Diamonds (CA) 7-3.
After Saturday's marathon, the Vipers returned on Sunday morning and defeated the So Cal Hurricanes, 2-1, in a thrilling finish, before finally falling to the Corona Angels.
The Vipers proudly represented Georgia with our 4th place finish at Nationals, our Region Championship, and an overall record of 91-31-2 for the 2007-08 season.
Having played in the last 5 ASA Nationals, the Vipers move up to 16U in 2008-09, setting our sights on Sioux Falls, SD and the 2009 16U ASA Nationals.
