The Athens Pirates took 3 out of 4 games this weekend versus the Chattanooga Styx in a battle for first place in the Great South League. The Pirates, who have held a strangle hold on first place since the season started, saw the upstart Styx go into first place last Thursday after the Pirates were swept in the doubleheader by the West Virginia Wild of the Carolina-Virginia League.

The Pirates traveled to Chattanooga on Saturday and for the second time this season swept a doubleheader. The first game was a 3-0 win for the Pirates with former Oconee County star and UGA player, Taylor Hicks, getting the win. Hicks allowed only 2 hits with 8 k's in the seven inning game. In game 2, the Pirates came-from-behind to edge the Styx 8-7. Heath Holder, a UGA signee from Walton County, pitched five strong innings and was relieved by Gray Griffith of UGA who got the win.

In Sunday's doubleheader, Matt Kaplan of Georgia College, lost for the first time this season in a 6-3 win for the Styx. In game 2, Steven Voigt got the win in a 3-1 victory for the Pirates. Nelson Ward, a UGA signee, had a game-tying double going 2 for 3 while teammate Kenny Kirshner of Siena College went 2 for 4 with the game-winning hit.

Athens Pirates Players return "Home" in Siena versus Georgia Baseball Weekend
Athens Pirates Players return “Home” in Siena versus Georgia Baseball Weekend

This weekend’s 3 game baseball series between the Siena Saints from Loudenville NY and the University of Georgia Bulldogs will not be your typical match-up of D I schools playing out-of-conference foes. It won’t be your average North comes South or blue-gray, Yankee-rebel rivalry.

In fact, it’s unlike any other college baseball series on the DI level this season.  This series will feature 15 players on the team’s rosters that have been teammates or about to be teammates of the well known College Summer Baseball Club, the Athens Pirates. . It is, in effect, a “homecoming” to Athens for 12 players on the Siena roster: 8 former players and 4 new players for the 2010 College Summer Baseball Season.

Even Siena Assistant Baseball Coach, Jimmy Jackson, is a Pirates veteran, having played on the 2002 Pirates team. On the Georgia side, pitchers Justin Earls and John Herman played on the 2009 Athens Pirates and were teammates with 4 Siena players: Danny Paolini, Ryan Poplawski, Andrew Sawyer, and Nikko Stento. Sawyer is a local kid from Powder Springs GA and a McEachern High School grad.

Tony Rossi, the 41 year veteran head coach of  Siena started sending some of his best players to Athens in 2004. That year the Saints sent John Lannan, LHP, currently the #1 pitcher in the Washington Nationals rotation and Scott King to play for the Pirates and the tradition continues to today. Georgia’s Director of Baseball Operations, Kris Edge, a long-time “friend” of the Pirates even sent his brother, Kevin, to play with the Pirates in 2004: a teammate of Lannan and King. Lannan spend the summer with the Joe & Vikki Sykora family while King was a guest of Stan Stanchek, long-time Pirates friend who passed away a couple of years ago.

The Pirates are now in their 19th season and members of the Great South League (www.greatsouthleague.com ). The Great South League is the nations largest College Summer Baseball League consisting of 24 teams in 6 states ranging from Virginia to Florida.

The 3 game series begins Friday, March 12th at 6:30 PM at Foley Field in Athens GA where the expected starter for Siena is Pirates’ signee, Robert Tedesco. Saturday’s game is scheduled for a 3PM start. The final game of the series is Sunday, March 14th at 1PM.

Mike McCardell "MAC"
Saturday, April 12
2005 Athens Pirates Mike McCardell named "Best Curveball" & #18 Prospect in Minnesota Twins Organization
KUTZTOWN, Pa. Former Kutztown University and Athens Pirates standout pitcher Mike McCardell (West Chester/Henderson HS) was named the No. 18 prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization by Baseball America

McCardell, a first baseman/right-handed pitcher for KU from 2004-07, made his professional debut last summer in the Twins organization.  After being drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, McCardell reported to the Gulf Coast League Twins. There he was 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA and had 25 strikeouts in 18 innings.

He was quickly promoted to the high-rookie ball Elizabethton Twins, where he had a 5-1 record and 2.00 ERA in eight starts. In 45 innings, McCardell fanned 70 batters, with opponents hitting .179 against him. Between the two levels, he compiled an impressive 102-9 strikeout to walk ratio, which includes a playoff game at Elizabethton.

According to Baseball America, McCardell is not only the No. 18 prospect for the Twins, he also has the best curveball, which was also ruled the best secondary pitch in the entire Twins minor league organization.

“He’s athletic and has a pitcher’s frame, with excellent control of his fastball. His best pitch is an outstanding curveball, one he can throw for strikes or bury as a chase pitch,” scout John Wilson, who signed McCardell, told Baseball America. “His fastball/curveball combo profiles him as at least a setup man right now. He's expected to get on the fast track and jump to high class A.”

At Kutztown, McCardell was 7-3 with five saves and a 2.00 earned-run average in 21 appearances as a senior last year.  He struck out 86 and walked just 11 in 67.1 innings.  For his career, he finished with a 2.82 ERA, second lowest in school history.  He holds the school record for saves (21), is third in strikeouts (278), fourth in innings pitched (236.1) and fifth in wins (20).

McCardell was a two-time all-region pick, by both Daktronics and the ABCA, and two-time first-team All-PSAC East selection as a pitcher and infielder.  He was named the ABCA North Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year and the ABCA/Rawlings Golden Glove pitcher for the region in 2007 and was the 2006 PSAC East Pitcher of the Year. McCardell played for the well-known Athens Pirates (GA) College Summer Baseball Club for the 2005 Summer Season.

San Francisco, CA.

John Lannan, former left-handed pitcher with the 2004 Athens Pirates, started tonight for the Washington Nationals against the San Francisco Giants and Barry Bonds.  Lannan held Bonds in check through 8 innings allowing just one run.  Bonds popped up to the 3rd baseman; walked, hit into a doulbe play and struck out against Lannan.

Lannan was making his third Major League start. Check the 2004 team for Lannan's stats.

Former Athens Pirate moves from middle relief to the starting rotation in Class-A

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. – Former Athens Pirates and North Georgia College & State University baseball player Richie Daigle impressed the San Diego Padres' organization with last year's 6-1 record in middle relief, that they sent him back to Lake Elsinore and into the starting rotation for the 2007 season.

Daigle, a product of Brunswick, appeared in 53 games last season out of the bullpen. He posted a 6-1 record with a 3.42 earned run average, while striking out 36 just a year ago.

This season, after a strenous off-season workout in Dahlonega, Daigle moved into the starting rotation and started 13 games to this point. Although his record and ERA are not what they were last year, he is still on a learning curve with starting games instead of coming out of the bullpen.

This season, Daigle is 3-4 with a 7.86 ERA in 63 innings. Through 13 games, Daigle has almost surpassed his total innings pitched from a season ago. He has allowed 86 hits, while striking out 41.

He got his first victory as a starter on May 15 with a six inning performance in front of the home crowd. His last start was on June 10 in which he lasted just 3 2/3 innings, but appeared on June 15 out of the bullpen.

Athens, Georgia:

The Athens Pirates announced today that three of their former players were chosen in the top 588 players taken in the draft world.

Mike "Mac" McCardell of Kutztown University (PA) was chosen in the 6th round by the Minnesta Twins as the 212th overall pick. Marcus Davis of Alcorn State Unversity (MS) was chosen in the 18th Round by the Pittsburgh Pirates as the 548th player chosen. Brett Butts of Auburn University was chosen by the home-town Atlanta Braves with the 588th overall pick in the 19th round. Tom Hill of The University at Albany (NY) was chosen by the Kansas City Royals in the 34th round.

McCardell, a right-handed pitcher, was 7-3 with five saves and a 2.00 earned-run average in 21 appearances this season. He struck out 86 and walked just 11 in 67.1 innings.

For his career, he finished with a 2.82 ERA, second lowest in school history. He holds the school record for saves (21), third in strikeouts (278), fourth in innings pitched (236.1) and fifth in wins (20).

“I’m overjoyed for Mike,” KU head coach Chris Blum said. “He’s surrounded by a great family, and I can’t thank Mike and his family enough. They took a chance on Kutztown coming out of high school. I had the pleasure of watching him over four years, to mature and become a truly outstanding player.   I can’t be happier for Mike and the entire McCardell family.”

“It’s really exciting, because I’ve worked for this day for a long time,” McCardell said. “I was told I may be selected anywhere from the 10th to the 15th round, so to be taken in the sixth round is just unbelievable. I want to thank my parents for always being there for me and coming to all my games. I also want to thank Kutztown University, Coach Blum and the rest of the baseball team for everything they’ve done for me.”

McCardell played summer ball in 2005 for the Athens Pirates where he was an All-Star in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League (SCBL).

McCardell is the second-highest draft choice in KU history. Only Ryan Vogelsong, who was taken in the fifth round in 1998, was a higher choice. MCcardell is with the GCL Twins in the Minnesota Organization.

Alcorn State Braves Outfielder Marcus Davis was drafted in the 18th Round of the Major League Baseball Draft. Davis, a senior outfielder from Magee, hit .393 with 16 home runs and 63 RBIs. He was also named the Southwest Athletic Conference’s preseason baseball player of the year. Davis is currently with the State College Spikes in the Pirates Organization (MLB).

Brett Butts, a Junior from Auburn University, had a solid season coming out of the bullpen, leading the team in saves (6), innings by a reliever (54) and appearances (24). His 2.83 ERA was 3rd on the team as he went 2-2 on the year, striking out 54 as he walked just 23. "I'm just glad it's over with. I have been stressing about it forever. Since the season ended, I didn't know what to do", Butts said. "I have been a Braves fan forever and it's a little more special to be drafted by the hometown team". Butts went 3-2, 2.61 at three levels in the Braves organization this summer before finishing it at Double-A Mississippi in the Texas League playoffs.

Tommy Hill, Catcher from The University of Albany, NY was chosen in the 34th round by the Kansas City Royals. Hill was the Pirates catcher in the 2005 season.

Pirates ready to raid foes
Season of transition opens for Park, team
By Chris J. Starrs   |   Correspondent   |   Story updated at 12:06 AM on Wednesday, June 14, 2006
Bill Park doesn't promise the young men who play on his Athens Pirates summer baseball team that he can get them scholarship offers or professional contracts, but he does make one ironclad guarantee to the players on the 25-man roster.

"I make the players sing the national anthem before every game - I'm a mean guy," the Pirates' longtime general manager said. "If nothing else, by the time a player leaves the Pirates, he knows the national anthem."

The Pirates, who annually showcase the talents of college-aged players from across the country, will crank up their 14th season against the Norcross Astros at 8 p.m. today at Smith Field.

This year will be much different from past seasons, however. Park said the Pirates - who went 42-16 in 2005 - are in a transitional period.

For the last several years, the team has competed in the Southern Collegiate Baseball League, but Park decided that because of increasing travel expenses, the Pirates will play most of their games this season under the auspices of the American Amateur Baseball Congress. The Pirates will play about 40 games in their 2007 Summer Season.

"In the last few years, we've played exclusively with the SCBL, but the two teams closest to us in that league - the Anderson (S.C.) Warriors and the Due West (S.C.) Indians - are no longer operating, so we decided to make some changes and play closer to home more," Park said. "Our plan is to play a full schedule again, but we had to make adjustments for travel this summer. Traveling last summer just ate us up."

One aspect of the Pirates that hasn't changed, however, is the desire of players from the Athens area and beyond to continue to hone their skills. Park generally recruits about a dozen players from out of state - who stay with host families - and this year the Pirates held an open tryout to fill out the roster with homegrown talent.

"We kind of waited until the last minute with this year's roster," Park said. "We like to have area high school and college kids because we like to build our crowd with local names."

Among the Northeast Georgia players expected to play this season are Tyler Everson (Franklin County), Adam and Kyle McCollum (Hart County) and former Oconee County players Jessie West and Motie Wiggins, who plays for Georgia College.

"I had always heard this was a good program and a good team to be on for the summer," said Everson, who played two years at Truett-McConnell and has transferred to Southern Polytechnic. "This will be a great learning experience, and I've still got a lot to learn. It's good to get as many innings as you can so you can get a lot of at-bats and see a lot of pitchers."

"I'm glad to be able to be in this atmosphere before I go to college," said pitcher/outfielder Kyle McCollum, who hopes to play at Gordon College. "It can't help but improve my game - I hope to learn a lot about what it takes to play at the college level."

Wiggins, who originally signed with Columbus State after graduating from Oconee County in 2004 but later transferred to Georgia College, is starting his second season with the Pirates.

"In this (Stan Musial) league, we'll play against a lot of older guys and some ex-professionals," he said. "It's a really good experience to face guys who've played at the pro level. And I just see it as good competition and a good way to meet people and network."

Players are also excited about the opportunity to play and learn under coach Ricky Jones, who spent nine years in the Baltimore Orioles and Minnesota Twins organizations (playing in 16 games for the Orioles in 1986) and has minor league coaching experience.

"It's a great opportunity," McCollum said. "He's been at the highest level, so he knows what he's talking about. He knows how the game is played."
