2005 Athens Pirates Mike McCardell named "Best Curveball" & #18 Prospect in Minnesota Twins Organization KUTZTOWN, Pa. — Former Kutztown University and Athens Pirates standout pitcher Mike McCardell (West Chester/Henderson HS) was named the No. 18 prospect in the Minnesota Twins organization by Baseball America. McCardell, a first baseman/right-handed pitcher for KU from 2004-07, made his professional debut last summer in the Twins organization. After being drafted in the sixth round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft, McCardell reported to the Gulf Coast League Twins. There he was 2-0 with a 2.50 ERA and had 25 strikeouts in 18 innings. He was quickly promoted to the high-rookie ball Elizabethton Twins, where he had a 5-1 record and 2.00 ERA in eight starts. In 45 innings, McCardell fanned 70 batters, with opponents hitting .179 against him. Between the two levels, he compiled an impressive 102-9 strikeout to walk ratio, which includes a playoff game at Elizabethton.
“He’s athletic and has a pitcher’s frame, with excellent control of his fastball. His best pitch is an outstanding curveball, one he can throw for strikes or bury as a chase pitch,” scout John Wilson, who signed McCardell, told Baseball America. “His fastball/curveball combo profiles him as at least a setup man right now. He's expected to get on the fast track and jump to high class A.” At Kutztown, McCardell was 7-3 with five saves and a 2.00 earned-run average in 21 appearances as a senior last year. He struck out 86 and walked just 11 in 67.1 innings. For his career, he finished with a 2.82 ERA, second lowest in school history. He holds the school record for saves (21), is third in strikeouts (278), fourth in innings pitched (236.1) and fifth in wins (20). McCardell was a two-time all-region pick, by both Daktronics and the ABCA, and two-time first-team All-PSAC East selection as a pitcher and infielder. He was named the ABCA North Atlantic Region Pitcher of the Year and the ABCA/Rawlings Golden Glove pitcher for the region in 2007 and was the 2006 PSAC East Pitcher of the Year. McCardell played for the well-known Athens Pirates (GA) College Summer Baseball Club for the 2005 Summer Season. Wednesday, March 12 Athens Pirates on Youtube! Thursday, September 27 Five Athens Pirates named as "Top Ten Pro Prospects" in PGCrosschecker.com GCL List
GEORGIA COLLEGIATE LEAGUE
TOP 10 PROSPECTS, 2007
COMPILED BY ALLAN SIMPSON (In association with scouts and league managers)
The Athens Pirates were in existence 13 years before the two-year-old Georgia Collegiate League was formed, so they understandably had a running start on the 2007 season. Not only did the Pirates, who have sent four players to the big leagues in the last five years, including the likes of Chuck James (Braves) and Jeff Keppinger (Reds), win their second straight league title but they dominated the list of the league’s best prospects—with five players on the accompanying top 10 list.
No one may reach the big leagues from the Georgia Collegiate League’s Class of 2007 faster, however, than Windward Academy righthander Brett Butts, who didn’t qualify for the list because he worked in only three innings before signing with the Atlanta Braves as their 19th-round pick in this year’s draft. The former Auburn pitcher made a rapid ascent through the Braves system as he started his pro career at Rookie-level Danville and went 3-2, 2.61 at three levels in the Braves organization this summer before finishing it at Double-A Mississippi in the Texas League playoffs. (Butts was a member of the 2005 Athens Pirates when the Pirates were in the Southern Collegiate League)
PLAYER POS. TEAM B-T HT WT YR SCHOOL
1. Mike Eifel RHP Athens Pirates R-R 6-4 235 Sr. Dominican (Ill.)
SCOUTING REPORT: The powerfully-built Eifel may be from Dominican University, a little-known Division III college in Illinois , but he dominated the Georgia Collegiate League like no one else, going 5-1, 1.05 with 15 walks and 57 strikeouts in 43 innings. A former catcher, he overmatched hitters with a fastball that was a steady 88-92 mph all summer long, and topped out at 95 in the league’s post-season tournament. He mixed in a curve and changeup, had good mechanics and wasn’t afraid to move hitters off the plate.
2. Ben Blanton LHP Windward Acad. Rangers L-L 6-2 190 Fr. Vanderbilt
SCOUTING REPORT: Blanton threw just 82-84 mph entering his senior year at Georgia ’s Chattahoochee High but significantly added to his velocity through the course of the spring and summer. He was a customary 85-87 mph during the Georgia Collegiate League schedule, but occasionally touched 90. He should continue to add velocity as a freshman at Vanderbilt as he fills out his frame. Blanton pitched his best game of the summer in the opening game of the GCL playoffs against eventual champion Athens when he allowed five hits through eight innings, only to see a 6-1 lead in the ninth evaporate in a crushing 7-6 setback. Very poised for a high school talent in a college-age league, he was able to throw three pitches for strikes, including a curve and changeup.
3. Clete Jessup LHP Athens Pirates R-L 6-1 180 So. Georgia College
SCOUTING REPORT: Jessup went just 0-1, 10.12 in eight ineffective appearances at Division II Georgia College in the spring after transferring from Georgia Southern, but had an impressive summer. He was the lefthander in an effective righty-lefty starter tandem for the Pirates. He went 5-1, 1.47 with just six walks and 52 strikeouts in 43 innings—nearly-identical numbers posted by ace righthander Mike Eifel. Jessup threw four pitches efficiently for strikes—an 86-88 mph fastball, curve, change and cutter.
4. Greg Hendrix LHP Athens Pirates L-L 6-4 180 So. Shelton State (Ala. ) JC
SCOUTING REPORT: Somewhat of a late bloomer, Hendrix threw his fastball at 88-91 mph this summer but scouts say he may reach the mid-90s as he fills out his long, lean frame. He went 5-1, 4.02 for the league champion Pirates while striking out 37 in 31 innings, but needs to sharpen his command. He also has the makings of a 12-to-6 curve and a decent change.
5. Montoya Young OF Georgia Stars R-R 6-0 170 So. Darton (Ga. ) JC
SCOUTING REPORT: Young’s best tools are his speed and all-around athletic ability. He stole a league-best 29 bases this summer while hitting .377. He has a little or no power with just one extra-base hit—a double. He has decent range and arm strength in the outfield.
6. Marquis Zachery OF Windward Acad. Rangers R-R 6-2 180 So. Lake City (Fla. ) CC
SCOUTING REPORT: Zachery, a 50th-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2006, has excellent raw talent—especially speed. He has an ability to drive a fastball and should have power potential as he fills out and matures, but needs to learn to hit and hit with power more consistently in games.
7. Tyler Davis OF Thomasville Bombers R-R 6-1 185 So. Hillsborough (Fla. ) CC
SCOUTING REPORT: Possibly the best raw talent in the Georgia Collegiate League, Davis flashes major league power, above-average speed and above-average arm strength. He just needs time and experience to draw out his talent.
8. Jarrod Willis OF/RHP Waleska Ringers R-R 6-0 175 Jr. Reinhardt (Ga. )
SCOUTING REPORT: Jarrod and his twin brother Michael both play outfield for Reinhardt College, a little NAIA school in Georgia , and spent the summer playing alongside each other for their hometown team in the GCL. Jarrod, who hit .419-3-25 on the summer, has more offensive upside than his brother along with a superior arm.
9. Danny Roderick C Athens Pirates R-R 6-0 200 Fr. Middle Georgia JC
SCOUTING REPORT: The league’s home run (6) and RBI (30) leader, Roderick has good power and a fast bat at the plate. He also has a good eye, good strike zone knowledge and is a patient hitter. His defensive skills are just average.
10. Trey Walker OF Georgia Stars R-R 6-3 220 So. LaGrange (Ga. )
SCOUTING REPORT: Walker is a good contact hitter. He topped LaGrange, a Division III school, with a .407 average in the spring and followed with a .448 average this summer—though showed only minimal power. He can play all three outfield positions, has decent range and an average arm.

Former Athens Pirate, John Lannan, pitching for Nationals v. Barry Bonds San Francisco, CA.
John Lannan, former left-handed pitcher with the 2004 Athens Pirates, started tonight for the Washington Nationals against the San Francisco Giants and Barry Bonds. Lannan held Bonds in check through 8 innings allowing just one run. Bonds popped up to the 3rd baseman; walked, hit into a doulbe play and struck out against Lannan. Lannan was making his third Major League start. Check the 2004 team for Lannan's stats. Sunday, August 5 Pirates top Georgia Stars 6-5 in 13 Innings Details to be added later today.
Saturday, August 4 Pirates pull out thrilling 7-6 Walk off Win over Windward Rangers LaGrange, Georgia
The Athens Pirates came from behind, down 6-1 in the 9th inning, to pull out a thrilling 7-6 win over the upstart Windward Rangers. The Rangers showed little respect for the regular season champions pulling ahead 2-1 in the first inning and tacking on 4 additional runs in the 4th inning. The Windward starter, Blanton from Vanderbilt University, kept the Pirates in check for 8 full innings scattering just 5 hits. He began the 9th inning with a 112 pitch count and promptly loaded the bases with hits by Cory Finley of West Liberty, Greg Gilroy of New York Tech safe on an error, and Blake Allen of LaGrange singled. Coach Ricky Jones sent Christian Dienna of New York Tech to pinch hitg for Evan Smith. Dienna smashed the first pitch from the new pitcher, Chris Carroll, for an RBI single to start the rally. Brent Bumgarner of West Alabama hit a 3-1 pitch for a 2RBI double to bring the score to 6-4. Sean Harrell of Georgia College, the leadoff batter in the lineup, ripped a hard hit ball to the shortstop driving in the 5th run and bring the score to 6-5. Coach Jones had Brian Smith of New York Tech bunting and quickly went down 0-2 and a K. Danny Roderick of Middle Georgia College cloppered a Chris Carroll pitch on a 2-2 count to deep left field which was barely caught by the left fielder. The runner at second, Sean Harrell, barely made it back to second base. The man of the hour, Cory Matticola of Lagrange College, came to bat for the 5th time in the game. Matticola already had 3 hits in 4 at bats. The Pirate expected the Windward coach to walk Matticola to load the bases and pitch to Finley. The count went 1-2 on Matticola before Sean Harrell stole second base on catchers indiffference. Cory then fouled off another pitch. Matticola then took Carroll to deep right-center in the gap driving in 2 RBI (Bumgarner & Harrell) to complete the victory. Tom Dimitroff of Piedmont College relieved the starter Steve Faulkner and pitched 4 2/3 innings of shutout baseball. Frank Ryan pitched the 9th inning for the Pirates picking up the win allowing no hits. Certainly in the 15 year history of the Athens Pirates, this game will go down as the most memorable comeback win in recent memory. The Pirates next game is today, Saturday August 4th, at 7PM versus the #2 seed, The Georgia Stars. The Stars will start their top pitcher, Mike Vitale, while the Pirates will go with Mike Eifel. The game will be broadcast "LIVE" on Teamline. Please call us at 706-296-4054 during the game. Tuesday, July 31 Pirates shine in All Star Game Despite losing 10-4 to the West All Stars, the East players represented by The Athens Pirates had a strong showing. The Athens pitchers (Mike Eifel, Tom Dimitroff, Steve Faulkner, and Jamie Ammons combined to allow just one run (unearned). Dimitroff and Faulkner pitched two innings each with Eifel (the starting pitcher) and Ammons (the Closer) pitching one inning each. Clete Jessup, Brad Long and Greg Hendrix had injuries which kept them from pitching in the game. Jessup and Long should be back for the GCL tournament (August 3, 4, 5) but Hendrix is out for the rest of the season. The Athens hitters did well with Brian Smith hitting the only home run of the game (1 for 3); Christian Dienna (1 for 2) had a single and RBI; Cory Matticola (1 for 3) had a double and scored; Matt Pitts (1 for 2) had a single and stolen base; Sean Harrell (0 for 3)hit the ball hard all day and led off the game with a hard hit ball reaching base on an error and stealing second; Danny Roderick reached base once on a base on balls; Cory Finley (0 for 1)reached base on a base on balls; Brent Bumgarner (1 for 2) had a double and RBI; Greg Gilroy (0 for 2) became ill during the game and had to leave; and Jason Redden hit the ball well in 2 at bats hitting the ball to deep center (400') but was out on a great catch. The East team outhit the West 12-10. Monday, July 30 Athens Pirates Regular Season Champs The Athens Pirates captured the 2007 Regular Season Georgia Collegiate League Championship. Veggie Tales: The Pirates who don't do anything - Kids - have some Pirate fun with Veggie Tales!
Pirates fueled by Oconee County Grads Oconee county grads fueling Pirates' summer run Former Oconee County baseball players (from top left) Tom Dimitroff, Kelson Looney and Chip Pledger, (bottom from left) Chase Stephens, Evan Smith and Jake Barnett are now honing their skills with the Athens Pirates. Not pictured: Ryan Cheek. Kelly Lambert / Staff Evan Smith plays catch with batboy Sam Middlebrooks, 8, before the Athens Pirates game on Friday at Smith Field. Kelly Lambert / Staff By Jon Page | Staff Writer | Story updated at 10:59 PM on Friday, June 22, 2007 After working in construction with his father for two straight summers, Tom Dimitroff was looking for a way to ease back into playing baseball last year. The 2002 Oconee County graduate had not played competitive baseball since the final of his two seasons at Augusta State in 2004. But the left-handed pitcher found renewed passion for the game with the Athens Pirates of the Georgia Collegiate League last summer. "You get to meet a lot of people from different places, and meet new friends," said Dimitroff, who played at Piedmont College last season and is back for his second summer with the Pirates. "Coach (Ricky) Jones helped me out a lot last summer, getting back into it. I guess that's pretty much why I came back here this year. It's convenient, living around here." MULTIMEDIA VIDEO: Watch a video story on Athens Pirates' coach Ricky Jones: Click on article title for News Story with Video link Dimitroff isn't the only former Warrior taking advantage of the team's location. Seven former Oconee County players are among the team's 30 players. It's the most players from the same high school that general manager Bill Park can remember having in the team's 15-year history. "We were told by our college coaches that we had to play somewhere this summer," said Kelson Looney, who graduated from Oconee County in 2006 with Valdosta State teammate Chip Pledger. "Knowing that we had a team here in Athens that is probably 15 minutes from where we lived, I called the coaches and told them I wanted to play." Dimitroff, who pitched six inning with 12 strikeouts to earn his second win of the season on Tuesday, is the oldest former Warrior on the team. Jake Barnett, a pitcher who graduated from Oconee County in May, is the youngest. Barnett signed with Emmanuel College on Tuesday, the same day he pitched two scoreless innings in relief. Like most of their former Warriors teammates, Barnett and Ryan Cheek played Little League games at Smith Field, the Pirates' home field. "I actually practiced with the Pirates a couple of times just to get some tutoring in when I was younger and in high school," Cheek said. "I needed a place to play and came out here and tried out and they took me for my pitching." After graduating from Oconee County alongside Pirates teammate Evan Smith in 2005, Cheek attended Brewton-Parker College for one semester before transferring to Georgia Southwestern State University, where he failed to make the team. Now he is attending Athens Technical College, but he hopes to gain acceptance to Georgia College and State University - the same school as former Oconee County teammate Chase Stephens. This summer Cheek will keep his skills sharp with a slew of teammates from around the state, including former Clarke Central player Kelly Jenkins and Hartwell native Vance Crook.
