Alexandria Senior High School (ASH) Varsity Basketball Team. A progressive varsity prep hoops program in the city of Alexandria.  Head Basketball Coach: Alex Perkins

Coach Perkins in his second year at ASH is optimistic about the 2007-08 Trojans basketball team.  A good group of athletes with youth and experience make up the team with great potential.  Come support your ASH team.

"During the season, your team should be led with exuberance and excitement. You should live the journey. You should live it right. You should live it together. You should live it shared. You should try to make one another better. You should get on one another if somebody’s not doing their part. You should hug one another when they are. You should be disappointed in a loss and exhilarated in a win. It’s all about the journey.

People want to be on a team. They want to be part of something bigger than themselves. They want to be in a situation where they feel that they are doing something for the greater good."     Coach K-Duke University

TEAMWORK

Being a consistent winner in this game or in life, is largely dependent upon teamwork and not on the individual talents of any one person. You must be able to work with those around you to achieve a common goal.

"When a gifted team dedicates itself to unselfish trust and combines instinct with boldness and effort--it is ready to climb."-- Pat Riley

"The challenge of every team is to build a feeling of oneness, of dependence on one another because the question is usually not how well each person performs, but how well they work together."-- Vince Lombardi

"It's not my job to look good. It's my job to make other people look good."-- Wes Unseld

"Our goal is not to win. It's to play together and play hard. Then, winning takes care of itself."-- Mike Krzyzewski

"The best method of overcoming obstacles is the team method."-- General Colin Powell

"One man can be a crucial ingredient on a team, but one man cannot make a team."
-- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."-- Babe Ruth

TAG TEAM: Cannon, Tioga transfer Welch lead resurgent ASH hoops team

By Bret H. McCormick • bmccormick@thetowntalk.com • July 4, 2008

Alexandria Senior High's boys basketball team came tantalizingly close to knocking off Peabody last season.

The Warhorses have won 15 district championships in a row, but ASH coach Alex Perkins hopes this could be the year of the Trojan.

Perkins lost three key players -- Cory Blake, Randolph Holly and Paul Wytcherly -- from his 10-man rotation, but also brings in Hakeem "Doc" Welch, a junior who played at Tioga last year and was the only high-profile transfer from the parish's open enrollment program.

"A good part of the summer" has been used to find the two players to fill roles in Perkins' system, where he prefers to substitute in waves with a separate first and second team.

The summer also has served as an introduction for Welch about the ins and outs of Perkins' system.

Welch, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard who transferred to ASH because of its all-around sports program, is one of several talented juniors in Central Louisiana and was Tioga's leading scorer last season. His game is predicated in that he's a deadly catch-and-shoot player on the perimeter.

"He's a real good shooter, a very consistent shooter," ASH senior point guard Dontae Cannon said.

Perkins, however, would like to see more from Welch with the Trojans.

"It's been a good introduction for him," Perkins said of the summer work. "He really got a chance to see how uptempo, how fast-paced and how important defense is to us. ... Everybody can see that he can shoot the ball. He shoots the ball well."

"We were running a whole lot of defensive stuff, especially on my part," Welch said. "Whenever we were on defense, he'd be stressing stuff to me and making sure he got his point across."

Perkins also believes Welch can be more than just a shooter, though, and is working with him to develop a dribble-drive game.

"Last year ... I would practice shooting all the time," Welch said. "I was always shooting. Now I'm driving. I'm driving to the goal and figuring out dribble moves."

The Trojans already have Cannon, a 6-1 guard who was their leading scorer last year and is perhaps the top senior in Cenla. Perkins believes Cannon, whose strength is attacking the rim, and Welch can be the 1-2 combo that lifts ASH over Peabody this season.

"Which poison do you prefer?" Perkins asked rhetorically. "Do you leave the lane open, or do you leave (Welch) open? If you let Dontae go to the basket that night, that could be a three-point play. ... It's just unbelievable that I've got two on the same team that are capable of going 20 to 25 points every night."

Welch said he is "excited" to play with Cannon, whom he's played with and against on the basketball court and dating back to when they were 11 years old and on the same baseball team.

"I definitely think we can beat Peabody," Welch said. "We looked real good during the summer. We beat them once during the summer league at Peabody."

Cannon, who is trying to help Welch adjust to the Trojans' full-court man-to-man defense, said playing with Welch will help him become a more dangerous player.

"It'll be easier to score," Cannon said. "It's somebody to pass the ball to and somebody else who can score on the team."

Still, Perkins knows Cannon and Welch can't do it by themselves. He believes the perimeter will be fine with Karllis Perry at the other wing, but is concerned about his post game.

Philip Mathews, a 6-5 forward who is the key returner in the post, has missed most of the summer with a sprained knee, but is expected to play a huge role.

Perkins also moved Deonte Piper from guard to the post, and the 5-11 Piper has thrived because of his physical play.

"He's so physical that nobody wants to deal with him," Perkins said. "He's not even 6-foot, but he's so strong down around the basket."

Perkins also has high expectations for freshman Teddreick Brown, a 6-3, 250-pounder who played last year at Alexandria Middle School. Brown might be thrust into the starting lineup immediately.

"We have to make teams play us honestly," Perkins said.
