Final Countdown

Sunday, February 15
REBELS TAKE 2ND IN PENSACOLA (FL) COCA COLA CLASSIC
Finishing with a heart wrenching 0-4 loss to the Lafreniere (LA) Gamblers (ranked 4th among U14 Boys team in Louisiana), the America’s Soccer Club Rebels ‘89/’90 of Naperville took second place in the U-14 Blue division at the Pensacola Coca Cola Classic Tournament on February 15 under the leadership of coaches. The Rebels pushed hard to answer the goals, but time was not on their side.

The tournament opened on a cold and rainy Valentine’s Day morning as the Rebels began their trek toward the finals. An opening 5-0 win over the Bayside (FL) Breakers started the Rebels on their way. They faltered slightly with a 2-2 tie to the Georgia FC Black to end Saturday’s play. Sunday dawned very cold with 20 mph winds, but that didn’t dampen the Rebel’s spirit as they rallied to a 3-1 victory over the Mountain Brook (AL) Thunderbolts, who are ranked 2nd in Alabama and 62nd in the nation by gotsoccer.com, to insure their spot in the finals.

The Rebel’s defense of Matthew Gallup (3 goals), Justin Garlinsky, Josh Heitzman, Bo Miller, Matthew Socha, and Juan Torres kept tight control of the backfield, while goalkeeper Jon Emerson (70.6% saves) kept the net tightly closed. Midfielders Diego Cisneros (1 goal and 1 assist), Anthony DiJohn (1 goal), Tyler Geppert, Kyle Swanson (1 goal) and Jake Tannenbaum (2 goals) managed the midfield as forwards Matthew Beatty (1 goal and 1 assist) and Tom Cullen (1 goal and 2 assists) pressed the Rebel attack.

Sunday, September 14
REBELS TAKE 2ND IN KOHL’S BEST OF THE MIDWEST TOURN
Finishing with a heart wrenching 0-1 loss to the Princeton (WI) Soccer Club Power (ranked 2nd among U14 Boys team in Wisconsin by NationalSoccerRanking.com), the America’s Soccer Club Rebels ‘89/’90 of Naperville took second place in the Premier flight at the Kohl’s Best of the Midwest Tournament on September 14 under the leadership of their coaches. The only score came late in the second half when the Power was able to squeak a striker by the Rebels defense for a score. The Rebels push hard to answer the goal, but time was not on their side.

On the way to the finals, the Rebels faced many strong opponents. An opening 2-0 loss to Milwaukee Sport Club put the Rebels at a disadvantage, but they showed their determination with back to back victories against the Dousman (WI) Blackwolves (ranked 8th among U14 Boys team in Wisconsin by NationalSoccerRanking.com) 1-0 and Windy City Pride 2-0 to put them in the semi-finals. A 1-0 victory over the Mequon (WI) Red cinched the finals.

The Rebel’s defense of Matthew Gallup, Justin Garlinsky, Josh Heitzman, Bo Miller, Matthew Socha, and Juan Torres kept tight control of the backfield, while goalkeeper Jon Emerson (39 saves and a 92.9% save percentage) kept the net tightly closed. Midfielders Diego Cisneros, Anthony DiJohn (1 goal), Tyler Geppert, Kyle Swanson and Jake Tannenbaum managed the midfield as forwards Matthew Beatty (1 goal and 1 assist), Tom Cullen (1 goal), Kirk Slawek and Josh Strong (1 goal) pressed the Rebel attack.
