REBELS TAKE 2ND IN PENSACOLA (FL) COCA COLA CLASSIC
Finishing with a heart wrenching 0-4 loss to the Lafreniere (LA) Gamblers (ranked 4th among U14 Boys team in Louisiana), the Americas Soccer Club Rebels 89/90 of Naperville took second place in the U-14 Blue division at the Pensacola Coca Cola Classic Tournament on February 15 under the leadership of coaches. The Rebels pushed hard to answer the goals, but time was not on their side.
The tournament opened on a cold and rainy Valentines Day morning as the Rebels began their trek toward the finals. An opening 5-0 win over the Bayside (FL) Breakers started the Rebels on their way. They faltered slightly with a 2-2 tie to the Georgia FC Black to end Saturdays play. Sunday dawned very cold with 20 mph winds, but that didnt dampen the Rebels spirit as they rallied to a 3-1 victory over the Mountain Brook (AL) Thunderbolts, who are ranked 2nd in Alabama and 62nd in the nation by gotsoccer.com, to insure their spot in the finals.
The Rebels defense of Matthew Gallup (3 goals), Justin Garlinsky, Josh Heitzman, Bo Miller, Matthew Socha, and Juan Torres kept tight control of the backfield, while goalkeeper Jon Emerson (70.6% saves) kept the net tightly closed. Midfielders Diego Cisneros (1 goal and 1 assist), Anthony DiJohn (1 goal), Tyler Geppert, Kyle Swanson (1 goal) and Jake Tannenbaum (2 goals) managed the midfield as forwards Matthew Beatty (1 goal and 1 assist) and Tom Cullen (1 goal and 2 assists) pressed the Rebel attack.
