2008 Youth Winter Developmental Clinic
Brodie’s Soccer Academy is offering the 2008 Winter Developmental Clinics, which will be directed by Ashburn Soccer Club Coach Royce Brodie, a nationally licensed coach with years of success and experience preparing youth teams/players for premier play.  The clinics are open to all players of various ages and ability.  This is an excellent opportunity for players who are serious about soccer and would like to improve their foot skills and learn how to play exciting possession oriented soccer in a premier travel team environment.

Brodie’s Soccer Academy Youth Development Program
The Soccer Academy Youth Development Program is a development academy where players will receive age-appropriate training and playing opportunities under the direction of a dedicated and nationally licensed coach. The focus is on the joy of play and the development of technical skills, ball control, and foot skills.  Older club players participate regularly in training and offer insight, friendship, and positive role models for our younger players.

Coach Brodie's Team Philosophy
Our Team's Philosophy is to help your child reach her full potential as an advanced soccer player in a fun and competitive environment and develop a love and passion for the game of soccer.

We will strive to develop a premier soccer team, but not at the cost of enjoyment for our players. We will teach "possession" & "ball control" and not "direct" (sometimes called "kick-ball" "Kick and run") style of play. Although a "direct" style of soccer gives you quick results, a team well versed in "possession" & "ball control" style of soccer will almost always beat a team using the "direct" style of play. Give and go passing, overlapping runs, laying the ball back, playing the ball out of the back, moving with the ball to space, moving without the ball to create space, and proficiency with the weak foot take much more time to teach and master. These are the skills required to play competitively at the state and national levels and what is referred to as a "premier" level of soccer.

The player who is interested in learning how to play "possession" & "ball control" style of soccer should understand what is required. Speed, agility, physical fitness, coachability, intelligence, unselfishness on the field, and commitment are extremely important traits. Equally important is patience, by the player and parents, as it takes longer to learn "possession" &"ball control" soccer. The team may not win all of their games the first couple of seasons, but over the long term, both the players and team will be more successful with this approach. Remember, "The Game played correctly is the Best Teacher".

Coaches Philosophy/Approach/Expectations –

·Philosophy: Per my mission statement - Take it seriously, and be passionate about the game. However, never loose sight that it is only a sport – It is a game. Soccer when played correctly is a “Beautiful” game that requires physical ability, technical skill, and playing smart. Although we are not preparing for the World Cup, our Girls need to come to practices and games ready to play hard and give everything they have. I don’t ask that the kids be perfect, I don’t expect them to play mistake free… But I do expect them to play with desire, passion, and give 100 % of themselves while on the field.

·I will strive to provide an environment which will allow the kids to learn and grow at their individual stage of development given their current ability level. We will attempt to provide an environment that will pose Challenges that will enable each player to participate at their own ability level.

·Youth sports should be fun, teach the elements of individual player skills and team cooperation, develop a spirit of fair play, respect, and good sportsmanship.

1. HAVE FUN learning and playing attractive, competitive soccer.

2. Elevate player’s individual skills, team skills and competitiveness.

3. Exhibit and encourage good character and sportsmanship, respect for others, teamwork, hard work, ethics and commitment.

4. Teach discipline and responsibility.

·Approach: (a) All around development (i.e., endurance, ball control, positioning, and team play), (b) obtain the best record possible (different from winning at “ALL COST”) and (c) have FUN.
·Practice: will focus on (1) basic individual technical skills, (2) small sided games, (3) Team Play, (4) being a smart player.

I will emphasize the values of playing the best one can, and making the greatest effort possible.

· Playing Time: As even as possible, but not always equal; will be based on skill level, work ethic, attitude, desire, hard work, desire, running verse walking, and what is Best for the TEAM on that particular day and game. The player on the field is in charge of her own playing time. If a player is working hard playing with desire, and passion…. She is going to make it difficult for me to sub. her out. However, on the other side if she looks tiered, not working hard, not getting back on defense, not chasing down players after loosing the ball, and isn’t playing "CRUSH" soccer….. She makes it easier for me to sub. her out.
· Starting Line Up: Will be the best TEAM of 7 at that particular time, game, week. Doesn’t mean the best 7 kids. If a player has a great week of practice, has a great pre-game warm up and is showing a lot of desire… That kid is going to start.

The behavior of parents and spectators on the sideline during games is an important factor in helping reinforce my philosophy. Negative or Critical verbal comments about any player or referee’s performance or ability is not only harmful to the players, but also encourages that losing is “bad”, therefore, worth avoiding at any cost. Positive WORDS of encouragement are always welcome.

The game of soccer it’s self is the best teacher. With all of us working together for the betterment of the kids and soccer, we will surely have a rewarding soccer experience this season.

It is the players/parents responsibility to check e-mails, and answering machines prior to all practices/matches/events for any updates.

Every player must bring his own fully inflated #4 ball to practice. Please be sure the kids have water, or sports drink at practices/training/games.

Upon arrival to field for game/practice players are responsible for their “kit” (T-shirts/uniforms tucked into shorts, shin guards covered by socks and appropriate footwear).

I expect positive comments from everyone and encourage positive reinforcement. Negativity, of any kind, will not be tolerated and will result in the appropriate action being taken by the coach. Absolutely No Negative sideline coaching will be tolerated.

If you are concerned or displeased with something, please do not question any of the coaches about concerns immediately before or after a game. You are asked to wait 24 hours to see if time reduces the intensity of the problem. If you are still upset or unhappy, contact the Head Coach, not your neighbor on the sideline.

NOTE: Matches/Games are the player’s “test”. It is the opportunity for the coach to see if the player can apply the “lessons” taught in practice! Although the coach may provide “hints/suggestions” during matches, the players are expected to “figure out the answers/find solutions on their own”.
