Arrowhead LL Suffers First Defeat of the 2009 Post Season in Championship Game
Presidents cup team loses championship 2-1 to Cactus Wren LL in a hard fought game. In preface I would like to say ,both teams were evenly matched in pitching, hitting and fielding and the game could have gone either way. Michael Haarmann took the hill for Arrowhead and delivered a complete game, outstanding performance, giving up just four hits against six strike outs, one walk with two errors behind him. The Cactus Wren pitcher allowed only three hits against six strike outs, two walks and had one error behind him.
The first inning was virtually the same in top and bottom, strike outs and ground outs by both teams, including the only free pass given up by Michael. The second inning had a little more action when Michael reached base safely on an error by the CW 2nd baseman, Alex Alwin reached base on a BB. Dalton Hutchinson hit a flair, with two outs, into short RF that was fielded on the run and thrown to first catching Dalton in a bang bang play, that could have gone either way, preventing a AHLL run. The CW half started with AH catcher Jake Karmann fielding a pop up at the screen for out number one. This was followed by a CW single and then a ground out to third baseman Billy McEowen to Ben Rosado and a CW strike out for the third out. The third inning was scoreless, highlighted by two nice plays by Cup catcher Nick Espinoza, fielding pop ups behind the plate. In the fourth inning, Jake started the scoring effort with a single up the middle followed by a line drive double to the wall by Aaron Prado, scoring Jake from first. With Aaron at 2nd and one out, CW struck out the next two AH batters to end the threat. Score AH 1- CW 0. The CW club countered with some fine hitting of their own leading off the inning with a blast to center field ending up with a man on 3rd and no outs. The second hitter drove a ground ruled double over the head of LF JW Hunt ,scoring the tying run. Michael recorded a strike out followed by a pop out to 2nd base man Dalton Hutchinson. An infield single fielded by SS Aaron Prado in the hole prevented the runner from advancing any farther than third. With two outs and a runner at third, our Cup catcher misplayed a pitch allowing CW to score what would become the deciding run. It should be noted here, There is never "one play" that decides the outcome of any sporting event. Our team won their games as a team and we lost this game as a team. Every player contributes to a victory as well as a defeat. The inning ended with a Dalton to Alex 4-3 put out on a ground ball. CW 2-AHLL 1. The fifth inning had AH threatening when Alex walked for the second time. However, a sharply hit ball by Drew Burns was fielded by the CW SS and stepping on the bag completed a 6u-3 double play ending the inning. Michael took care of the CW side with two strike outs and a pop up to Dalton at 2nd. The boys rallied in the dug out with a "1-2-3-ARROWHEAD" chant to start the top of the sixth. Dalton lead off with a strike out, followed by a single from Nick. JW Hunt made good contact, but right at a defender who threw out Nick at 2nd. Giorgio Thomas grounded out to third for the final out of the AHLL Presidents cup tournament. Hats off to the CW boys for their outstanding effort in retaining the Cup for their President.
Thanks to all our league brothers, coaches and parents for making this team's run for the cup an exciting experience. Special thanks to Brad Nelson, Terry Soich and Len Espinoza for making this possible. Good luck to our teams, the "Seeds", the "Sprouts" and the "Trees" as they battle for the state championship and hopefully beyond. God Bless and see you there.

Arrowhead LL Presidents Cup Team Advances to the Cup Finals
Arrowhead LL Presidents Cup advances to the Cup finals with a 2-1 victory over Avondale LL in a pitcher's duel featuring possibly three of the best pitchers in the tournament. Avondale's pitcher combined a strong fast ball with a 12-6 curve ball that baffled the AHLL sluggers, giving up just two hits against eight strike outs and one walk in a complete game effort. For Arrowhead, Michael Haarmann pitched two strong innings giving up two hits against one strike out. Kaleb Irwin took over the job in the top of the third allowing just four hits against nine strike outs and one walk.
The first inning was pure pitching with the only base runner belonging to Avondale on a single up the middle. The second inning brought some action when cup pitcher Michael Haarmann drove a single up the middle. Arrowhead could not capitalize on the base runner when Michael was thrown out attempting to steal second. In the bottom of the frame, with a man at first, an Avondale hitter grounded a ball up the middle, fielded by cup shortstop Aaron Prado who stepped on second and delivered a strike to stretched out first baseman Nick Espinoza for an inning ending double play. Avondale struck out the side in the top of the third. Arrowhead returned the favor, two strike outs and a ground out, Michael Haarman to Ben Rosado now playing short and first. The third and fourth inning were pure pitching, both sides retiring the sides with little threat. The fifth inning heated up the action. Avondale took care of the heart of the Arrowhead order, three up and three down. Avondale's turn in the bottom of the fifth started with a walk followed by two of Kaleb's strike outs. Avondale then put together a rally, starting with a single up the middle. Strong fielding in the out field kept the lead runner at second. A short dribble down the third base line fielded cleanly by third baseman Billy McEowen then falling down allowed the bases to load. An "Arrowhead chopper" up the middle was fielded by Michael, but the throw was not in time, allowing an Avondale run to score. Kaleb then struck out the final batter, but not before Avondale had taken a 1-0 lead. With Arrowhead down to their last frame a rally was in order. Michael Harrman lead off the inning with a pop out to the pitcher. Alex Alwin then stepped to the plate and stroked a clutch line drive to the wall (it would have been gone if it were not for the wind blowing in from center) for a double. Drew Burns stepped in and dropped a bunt causing the Avondale fielder to hurry and over throw first, allowing Alex to score from second and Drew replacing him on that bag. Dalton Hutchinson stepped to the plate and squaring to bunt forced the Avondale pitcher to throw the ball in the dirt. Heads up base running by Drew forced a throw to third that sailed into left field allowing what would become the deciding run to score. Avondale's half of the sixth inning started with the top of their order. Kaleb sat down the first two hitters with impressive strike outs, bringing up Avondale's number three hitter, who had been putting the ball in play all night. He drove a single into the out field and gave the Avondale team some hope for a come back. The next batter hit a ground ball in the hole between second and first, but was fielded by cup second baseman Dalton Hutchinson and delivered to Alex Alwin, at first, for the final out securing the Cuppers trip to the championship game Saturday night.
An outstanding effort was made by both teams in both playing skills and on field sportsmanship.
Next game: Winner of Alhambra-Cactus Wren Sat 7/18 @Rio Vista field #7 7:00pm
Thanks to all who attended tonight's nail biter and hope to see you on Saturday.

Arrowhead President's Cup Team Finishes Pool Play With 17-3 Win Over Holiday Park
AHLL Presidents Cup defeated Holiday Park 17-3 in a four inning run rule game to earn the top spot in the "A" pool bracket. This victory extended our record to 5-0 (3-0 pool). Aaron Prado was on the hill and provided a strong blue collar effort giving up just two hits against eight strikeouts and four walks. With a 13-1 lead in the top of the 3rd inning, Aaron gave up the first Holiday Park hit of the night. The HP clean up hitter then stepped into the box and hit a two run homer. There was an obvious change in the focus of our Cup pitcher who promptly fanned the next two batters on six pitches, with added steam, to retire the side. There was a rumor floating around the dug-out that Aaron had mentioned to team mate JW Hunt, he was looking for a little pay-back for the home run in the top of the frame. With bases loaded Aaron Prado delivered on his statement, four Cup runs crossed the plate. GRAND SLAM. All Cup hitters contributed to the scoring effort with base hits and RBI balls in play. Billy McEowen again delivered a powerful line drive home run to right center (3 post season) to electrify the fans and team mates. Aaron, Billy, Kaleb Irwin, and Ben Rosado all had a two hit game with Ben delivering a solid triple to the wall. The ball was handed to short relief, off-speed pitcher, Dalton Hutchinson to end the game on four batters, aided by an on the run fly ball to right center catch by Cup CF Drew Burns.
Next game: Elimination semis begin Fri 7/17 @7:00pm Foothills park with AHLL taking on the 2-1 (4-1 overall) Avondale team. Come out and show support for the strong effort our team has shown in their quest to return the Presidents Cup trophy to Arrowhead. See you there!

Arrowhead Presidents Cup Team Defeats Rio Vista PC 11-10
Our Arrowhead Presidents Cup team (4-0) defeated Rio Vista PC 11-10 in a wild finish. Cup pitchers struggled on the mound allowing ten walks and one hit batsman followed by a grand slam in the top of the 6th inning to bring the visiting Rio Vista PC to within one run. Defensively,a costly error allowed two runs to score in the 5th followed by an infield miscue in the 6th on a fly-ball falling between 2nd base and the pitchers mound, with two on and one out and ruled as "not an ordinary effort" to load the bases. The next batter struck out. With bases loaded and two outs RVPC clean up hitter drove a shot over center field for a grand slam. The final out came on a ground ball fielded by 2nd baseman Georgio Thomas to 1st baseman Alex Alwin to preserve the victory. Our Cup teams bright spots came on the offensive side of the innings. All our hitters either hit safely or put the ball in play to advance runners into scoring position. Billy McEowen led the charge with back to back two run homers to left center, with his final at bat an intentional pass in the bottom of the 5th. Kaleb Irwin and Michael Haarmann also had a strong night at the plate picking up two hits apiece. All in all it was gut check time for the AHLL cuppers, who didn't fold and played hard to the last out.

The presidents cup team defeated Peoria Mountain View 3-0 on Sat 7/11. Cup hitters were baffled by the off-speed pitching from the PMV pitchers.
