Arrowhead wins state Little League crown (from AzCentral.com)
This is a repost of the article that appeared in the Arizona Republic on July 31, 2009, written by Jose E. Garcia...

Lance Billingsley could sense the pressure on his team's shoulders.

Billingsley's cure: some pregame Wiffle Ball. The Arrowhead Little League coach introduced the ritual about six games ago, and the team hasn't looked back. Arrowhead now will take its carefree attitude to San Bernardino, Calif., as Arizona's representative in the West Region Major tournament. The team from Peoria defeated Tucson Canyon del Oro 12-2 in four innings in the Arizona state title game Friday at Rio Vista Sports Park in Peoria.

It was the second consecutive game in which Arrowhead run-ruled its opponent, and it was the first time Canyon del Oro lost in its past 26 games. Billingsley made another key move about six games ago, placing Blaze Bohall in the leadoff spot.

On Friday, Bohall hit a grand slam and knocked in the final run with a hard liner off the shortstop's glove.

"I knew I was going to get a curveball and that's what I hit," Bohall said. "It's awesome. It's awesome. We are going to San Bernardino."

Bohall is the fastest 11-year-old in the state, Billingsley said. On Friday, Bohall was one of the stronger kids. He came to bat in the bottom of the second inning with the score tied 1-1 and one out.

After falling behind 0-2 in the count, Bohall worked the count to 2-2 before hitting a curveball over the left-field fence. Arrowhead scored five runs in the fourth inning, including three after Tyler Watts, who was 2 for 3 and picked up the save, hit a double.

"There was no pressure on us today," Billingsley said.

Arrowhead (14-1) lost to Canyon del Oro in pool play this year and lost in the state semifinals last year.

Arrowhead Majors Advance to State Championship Friday With Win Over Yuma

Arrowhead's Major All-Stars won the State championship semi-final game over previously undefeated Yuma, 11-1, in a run rule shortened 5 inning game on Wednesday night.
It was a team effort with all 13 boys contributing.

The big story had to be the performance of Travis Ward, on the mound and at the plate. He pitched a complete game, only allowing a solo home run, striking out 10 in 5 innings. It was another dominant performance by "The Big Horse". At the dish, he banged out 3 hits, including the game ending run in the bottom of the 5th (scored by Connor Rochon, who had reached base on his second hit of the night).

Arrowhead had several players with multiple hit games including, Kyler "Mokie" Murphy, Cory Burk, and Connor Rochon.

The defense was excellent with the defensive (and momentum changing) play of the game taking place in the top of the second inning. With one out and a runner on second, Yuma hit a hard ground ball to Third baseman, Jake Christofferson (a human vacuum cleaner for Arrowhead). Jake looked the runner back and fired a strike to first baseman, Blaze Bohall to get the batter. Yuma's runner tried to test the arm of Blaze Bohall (arguably, the best first baseman in the state tournament) and "Blazer" threw a lazer to shortstop "Mokie" Murphy, who was covering third base. Mokie applied the tag, inning over, and Arrowhead was on the way to victory. Zack Humphrey and Harry Gard did another outstanding job at catcher for the victorious boys from North Glendale.

Arrowhead will play (undefeated in State tournament) Canyon Del Oro (CDO) of Tucson on Friday night at 7:00 at Rio Vista Park in Peoria (101/Thunderbird). Please make an effort to attend and create a huge home field advantage, and be sure to wear the "Arrowhead Black"!!!!

For those of you who cannot attend in person, the game will be broadcast live on Cox Sports 7 (for the first time in history of Arizona Little League baseball)

Arrowhead Majors Win 12 - 2, Improve Their Pool Play Record To 4 - 1
PEORIA – On a sweltering hot day, Arrowhead’s Major All Star Team beat the All Stars from Morenci-Clifton Little league 12 – 2 in a run rule shortened (four inning) game to improve their pool play record in the State All Star Tournament to 4 – 1.

Arrowhead was, once again (someone needs to help Manager Lance Billingsley with his coin flipping skills), the visitors and staked starting pitcher Zach Humphrey to an early 2 – 0 lead.

Arrowhead first baseman Blaze Bohall led off the game by getting hit by a pitch and moved to second on a passed ball. Connor Rochon walked to put runners on first and second and Jake Christopherson plated Blaze and moved Connor to second with a base hit. Connor scored on another MCLL passed ball to make the score 2 – 0. Angel Sanchez contributed a base hit in the inning but some terrific MCLL defense (both Kyler Murphy & Tyler Watts had base hits taken away by a couple of terrific catches) kept AHLL from adding any more runs in the inning.

Zach Humphrey then went to the mound in the bottom of the first inning and set the All Stars from MCLL down in order with two strikeouts and a ground out.

Arrowhead then tacked on four more runs in the top of the second. Sawyer Treese led off the inning with an infield hit to the MCLL second baseman, moved to second on a base hit by Humphrey, and got to third with a fielders choice off the bat of catcher Harry Gard (Humphrey was forced out at second). Bohall was up next and he loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch for the second consecutive inning. After an AHLL strike out Jake Christopherson was up with two outs and he got an RBI the hard way getting hit by a pitch bringing home Treese. Angel Sanchez was up next and he also got an RBI by sacrificing his body when we was hit by a pitch bringing home Gard. The bases were still loaded with two outs for Kyler Murphy and he plated Blaze and Jake with a double into left field making the score 6 – 0.

Both teams traded zeroes in the third inning with AHLL pitcher Zach Humphrey setting down MCLL in order in the bottom of the third with two strikeouts and a ground out. It ended up being the last inning pitched by Zach and he had a terrific pitching line going three innings and allowing zero runs giving up only one base hit, no walks, and five strikeouts.

Arrowhead scored six runs in the top of the fourth to extend their lead to 12 – 0. Blaze Bohall led off the inning by lining a ground rule double to center field and, after an AHLL pop out, scored on a Jake Christopherson single (Jake moved to second on the throw, and to third on a wild pitch). Corey Burk was up next and he plated Jake with an RBI ground out bringing Travis Ward to plate with nobody on and two out and Travis reached on a fielding error by the MCLL first baseman. After moving to second on a wild pitch, Travis scored on a base hit off the bat of Jonathan Turk bring up Sawyer Treese who promptly crushed his second home run in as many games scoring himself and Turk and making the score 11 - 0. Zach Humphrey followed up Sawyer’s home run by lining a triple into left field and scoring on a passed ball to finish the scoring for AHLL.

Blaze Bohall came on to pitch in the bottom of the fifth and got two strikeouts and gave up one hit and one walk in his 2/3 of an inning pitched. Jake Christpherson was called out of the bullpen to get the last out and, after a MCLL base hit, he got a strikeout to end the game.

It was another solid all around team effort for Arrowhead with the pitchers getting a combined eight strikeouts while only allowing three base hits, one walk, and two runs in the four inning game. Also, according to my book, the defense played an error free game and just about everyone contributed on offense.

Arrowhead plays their final pool play game on Monday night against the All Stars from North Scottsdale. This game is very important in determining the seeding for the rest of the tournament so we need all the supports we can get! The game is at Rio Vista Park (Field #6) at 5:30pm. BE THERE!

Arrowhead Majors Improve Their Pool Play Record to 3 - 1
PEORIA – Arrowhead’s Major All Star team improved their pool play record in the State All Star Tournament to 3 – 1 with a 16 – 3 victory over the All Stars from Verde Valley Little league Friday night in Peoria

Arrowhead was the visiting team and staked AHLL pitcher Jonathon Turk to an early 5 – 0 lead. After an Arrowhead strikeout to start the top of the first, Connor Rochon got things rolling with a double into left and moved to third on an infield hit by Travis Ward bringing Angel Sanchez to the plate. Angel promptly plated everyone, including himself, by crushing a home run to deep center field making the score 3 – 0. Kyler Murphy followed Angel’s homer by lining a double into right field and scored on another deep home run, this one off the bat of Arrowhead third baseman Tyler Watts making, it 5 – 0 Arrowhead.

Jonathan Turk then went to the mound and set down VVLL in order in the bottom of the first inning with two strikeouts. Turk had another terrific night on the bump pitching three innings setting down the Verde Valley batters in order each inning. Jonathon ended up with seven K’s in his three innings.

After both teams traded scoreless innings in the second Arrowhead got one more run in the top of the third when Tyler Watts led off the inning with a single, moved to second on a base hit off the bat of Turk, moved to third when catcher Harry Gard reached on a VVLL error, and finally scored when Jake Christopherson reached on a fielders choice making the score 6 - 0.

Jonathan Turk kept VVLL scoreless by striking out the side in the bottom of the third and Arrowhead gave him three more runs of support when they came to bat in the top of the fourth. After an AHLL fly out to start the inning, Angel Sanchez kept his great offensive day going by ripping a double in to center field. After Angel reached third on a wild pitch, Corey Burk grounded out but it was a productive out as Angel scored on the play giving Burk an RBI. Tyler Watts then lined a ground ball through the VVLL third baseman taking second on the play bringing up Sawyer Treese who put a beautiful swing on the ball (don’t left handed hitters always have the prettiest swings) lining a home run to right field to make it 9 – 0.

After VVLL scratched across three runs in the bottom of the fourth (only two of the runs were earned), Arrowhead put the game away scoring seven runs in the top of the fifth. Jake Christopherson started the inning off with a single into center field and came around to score on a Brandon Jones base hit. After an Arrowhead strike out, Angel Sanchez crushed his second home run of the game scoring himself and Jones making it 12 – 3. Corey Burk followed Angel’s home run with a base hit, moved to third on a base hit from Tyler Watts, and scored when Sawyer Treese reached on an error. After an Arrowhead strike out and walk to Zach Humphries the bases were loaded with two outs for Jake Christopherson. Jake lined a double up the middle bringing in Watts and Treese and bringing up Brandon Jones who finished AHLL’s scoring for the inning by bringing in Zach with a base hit.

Sawyer Treese pitched the bottom of the fifth and held VVLL scoreless by setting them down in order striking out all three batters he faced in the inning and ending the game early via the ten run rule.

It was another solid all around game for the team. The pitching, hitting, and defense were phenomenal and, though it was a terrific all around effort from everyone, I must mention again the terrific offensive performance put in by Angel Sanchez. Angel finished the day going 4 – 4 with a single, a double, two home runs, three runs scored, and five RBI. Great game Angel!

Arrowhead Majors Suffer loss at State Tournament
Arrowhead Majors lost Tuesday night 9 - 7 to CDO (Tucson) after a hard fought game.

Majors Start Off State Tournament With 10 - 2 Victory
PEORIA – Arrowhead’s Major All Star team got off to a good start in the Arizona State All Star Tournament with an impressive 10 - 2 victory over the All Stars from San Manuel (District 4) in Peoria on Monday night.

The recap from this game HAS to start off with the dominant pitching performance turned in by Arrowhead fireballer Jonathan Turk. Jonathan was definitely on his game Monday night pitching a complete game (6 inning) three hitter. In those six innings Turk struck out 16….yes you read that right…16 strikeouts. Turk had a perfect game going into the fourth inning after starting the game by retiring the first 12 San Manuel batters that came to the plate all by strikeout. Jonathan’s final line looked terrific. In his six innings he gave up three hits, two runs (both on solo homers), 16 strikeouts and no walks. What a performance by JT.

Arrowhead’s performance on offense was well distributed with virtually everyone getting involved. After a scoreless first inning the boys got things going with three runs in the top of the second. First baseman Blaze Bohall led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a single off the bat of Connor Rochon. The next AH hitter hit, what looked to be, a regular old pop up but Blaze Bohall made a terrific base running play to get himself to third base. On the play the San Manuel pitcher caught a regular old high hit fly ball in foul ground near the first base bag but Blaze tagged up and caught everyone by surprise (including the SM pitcher) by scooting into third without much of a play at all putting runners at first and third with one out. An errant pick off at third base went into left field scoring Blaze and moving Connor to second base. After an AH strikeout there were two outs with Connor still on second. Turk was up next and he got an infield single to put runners on first and second bringing up lead off hitter extraordinaire Kyler (Mokey) Murphy who (after a passed ball moved the runners to second and third) plated them both with a single into left field making it 3 – 0 good guys. Brandon Jones added a single of his own into left field but the SM pitcher got a ground ball to end the inning.

Following Turk setting down SM scoreless in the bottom of the second AH put up four more runs in the top of the third. After Travis Ward was robbed of a base hit leading off the inning when he lined a hard hit ball into center field that the SM center fielder made a nice catch on, Arrowhead’s Blaze Bohall got things going by ripping a double into center field and advancing to third on a productive ground out by Connor Rochon. Next up was Angel Sanchez who was hit by a pitch then he moved to second, with Blaze scoring, on a passed ball bringing up Harry Gard who knocked in Sanchez with a single into right. Jonathan Turk then moved Harry over to third with a base hit of his own, Bringing up Mokey who knocked in Gard with a base hit and moving Turk to third who eventually scored on a passed ball making the score 7 - 0.

After Turk, again, set down SM scoreless in the bottom of the third fArrowhead scored one more run in the top of the fourth when Blaze Bohall led off the inning with a base hit into center field and eventually scored on a SM error making the score 8 - 0.f

SM got one run back in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run and Arrowhead came right back got two runs of their own in the top of the fifth on a MAMMOTH home run into left center field off the bat of Blaze Bohall. After the first two AH batters were retired to start the inning Travis Ward was hit by a pitch to bring up Blaze who hit the aforementioned blast. I’m not sure how many of you have been of field #6 at Rio Vista but if you have you’ve seen the chain link fence, well beyond the home run fence, that divides the park and the 101 freeway. Blaze’s bomb cleared both the home run fence and the chain link fence. What a blast!

As much as I try include everyone in these recaps and as much as I try to not make them about one or two players there I no way I can do this write up justice without, again, mentioning the awesome performances of Jonathan Turk and Blaze Bohall. I mentioned Turk’s numbers above and I again want to congratulate him on a TERRIFIC pitching performance against a team who had to go through their Division Tournament and beat a lot of good teams to get here. That was a very good team he pitched against. I also have to mention, again, the tremendous night first baseman Blaze Bohall had. Blaze went 4 – 4 with two singles, a double, an absolute gargantuan home run, four runs scored, and two RBI, all of this in a State Tournament. This is a night I’m sure both Blaze & Jonathafn won’t soon forget.

Arrowhead next plays on Tuesday (July 21st) at 8pm against Canyon Del Oro Little League (Tucson) on field #5 at Rio Vista. Canyon Del Oro has always fielded VERY competitive teams at these Tournaments so we need all the fans we can get to come out and support our boys!

ARROWHEAD MAJORS WIN DISTRICT 2 CHAMPIONSHIP

Travis A. Johnsonf
July 16th, 2009

PEORIA – Arrowhead’s Major All Star team won the District 2 Championship for the third consecutive year and fourth out of the last five with a hard fought 8 – 5 victory over the All Stars from Holiday Park.

The game started well for Arrowhead which took a 6 – 0 first inning lead only to see a furious comeback from Holiday Park who, at one time, made it a 6 – 5 game but a few clutch late hits from Arrowhead gave them the 8 – 5 lead which they would not relinquish. On to the recap…..

Arrowhead’s Jake Christopherson started on the hill and set Holiday Park down in order with two strikeouts and a fly out to Arrowhead right fielder Corey Burk. Like I mentioned, Arrowhead came out swinging in the bottom of the first. Kyler (Mokey) Murphy led off the inning with a sharp single to left and moved to second when Arrowhead’s Harry Gard was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second with nobody out. Arrowhead’s Jake Christopherson then plated them both with a hard hit double. Next up was slugger Travis Ward who laced a line drive home run to left field making the score 4 – 0. After an Arrowhead strike out, Connor Rochon got things going again with an infield single. After another Arrowhead K, Zach Humphrey got an infield hit moving Brandon Jones (who was running for Connor) to second then Corey Burk plated them both with a single into right field making the score 6 – 0.

Christopherson struck out the first HP batter in the top of the second then escaped a jam when, with the bases loaded and only one out, Jake got a hard hit ground ball comebacker and turned a sweet 1 – 2 – 3 (pitcher, catcher, first base) double play to end the inning.

Arrowhead went down relatively quietly in the bottom of the second getting only a lead off single from Harry Gard before being retired without scoring.

An HP single and triple (with the batter who hit the triple scoring on an AH error) made the score 6 – 2 in the top of the third and chased Christopherson from the game with Arrowhead going to Tyler Watts to get out of the inning which he did without allowing any more runs. Jake’s final pitching line was good. He pitched 2+ innings giving up two runs (one earned) with three strikeouts.

After AH went down 1, 2, 3 in the bottom of the third HP then made things interesting getting three runs in the top of the fourth making the score 6 – 5. Tyler started on the bump beginning the fourth and pitched well giving up two runs (one earned) before giving way to Murphy with two outs in the inning and the score 6 – 4. Mokey gave up one unearned run before getting Arrowhead out of the jam. Tyler’s final line was also respectable as he pitched 1 1/3 innings giving up two runs (one earned) with a strikeout.

Arrowhead went into the bottom of the fourth looking to get some insurance runs and increase their 6 – 5 lead and they came through when it counted. Angel Sanchez lead off the innifng by taking one for the team and being awarded first base after getting hit by a pitch. After an AH strikeout Harry moved Angel to second by drawing a walk putting runners at first and second with one out. Another Arrowhead strikeout followed bringing Jonathan Turk to the plate and he drew a walk to load the bases for Bohall. Blaze stepped up when it counted and, arguably, got the hit of the game stroking a two out single into left field scoring Sanchez and Gard and giving AH an 8 – 5 lead. What a CLUTCH two out hit from Blaze.

Mokey set HP down 1,2,3 in the top of the fifth and Arrowhead tried like heck to get some more insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth but some great HP defense kept AH scoreless in the inning. Connor Rochon led off the bottom of the fifth by lining a ground ball up the middle but the HP second baseman made a terrific play throwing Connor out at first by an eyelash. Sawyer Treese then ripped a ground ball to the hole between shortstop and third but the HP shortstop made another terrific play getting to the ball and throwing Sawyer out at first by….. what’s smaller than an eyelash? Tyler Watts and Corey Burk followed by getting back to back two out singles but an AH strikeout ended the inning keeping the score 8 – 5.

Murphy came back out to pitch the 6th, and final, inning and gave off a lead off single. The next batter hit a hard ground ball to AH shortstop Jake Christopherson. Jake make the defensive play of the game as he ran to second to get the force out there and fired a strike to AH first baseman Blaze Bohall turning a HUGE double play putting AH one out away from the D2 Championship. HP wasn’t going to go down quietly though as their next batter laced a single up the middle but Mokey shook it off and got the next batter to fly out to AH right fielder Corey Burk (his name sure keeps popping up a lot in these write ups) to end the game and give Arrowhead the Championship.

It was another terrific night for Arrowhead Baseball as not only the Majors, but the 9/10’s and 11’s also won the District 2 Tournament sending all of them to the State Championships.

I’ve realized looking over my recaps that I’ve neglected to thank and congratulate the Major Coaches for the terrific job they’ve done. Coach Chris Burk, Coach Jerry Rochon, and Manager Lance Billingsley deserve a big THANK YOU from all of us for all the time they’ve given to bring the most out of the boys. They could not have done a better job and we should all be VERY thankful to have such terrific coaches!

The Major’s State Tourney will be played at Rio Vista so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t fill the place with AH supporters, lets make it a TRUE home field advantage! The Tournament games start on Monday July 20th with a kickoff parade to be held at the Westgate Plaza near the AZ Cardinals stadium on Sunday July 19th. For more information on the parade or anything else regarding the state tournament go to www.eteamz.com/azdistrct2 and click on the “State Tournament” link.

Congratulations to all the AH teams for representing out league, and our community so well. Great Job!

Arrowhead Majors Advance To District 2 Championship Game With A 4 – 0 Victory Over Rio Vista Little League

PEORIA – Arrowhead’s Major All Star team advanced to the Championship game of the District 2 Tournament with a hard fought 4 – 0 victory over the All Stars from Rio Vista Little League in Peoria on Tuesday night.

Both teams entered the semi final game with identical 4 – 0 records. Rio Vista had showed it was a terrific pitching and fielding team by only allowing five total runs in their four games while Arrowhead had showed they were an offensive powerhouse scoring 88 combined runs in their first four games.

With numbers like that you knew something had to give and for the first few innings it looked to be the Arrowhead offense as they were held scoreless by a terrific Rio Vista pitcher (he wore number 37 but I never got his name or I would be proud to print it here, he did a heck of a job). #37 held Arrowhead to no runs and only three hits through his 4 2/3 innings while striking out seven. Arrowhead did manage to load the bases with two out in the fifth with the score still 0 – 0 (and after #37 was removed for a relief pitcher). Connor Rochon looked to finally end the scoring drought hitting a line drive that looked to be destined to land in front of the RV left fielder but the RV shortstop made a terrific leaping catch to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

Travis Ward took the ball to start the game for Arrowhead and he delivered the performance of a lifetime on the mound. Travis ended up pitching a complete game one hit shutout while fanning 11 and only walking one RV batter. Only two batters reached base against Travis and neither of them got further than first base. Travis showed that he is definitely one that can be counted on to take the bump in a big game. What a performance by T-rav.

Entering the top of the 6th inning with the score still 0 – 0 Arrowhead looked to blow the game open loading the bases on a Jake Christopherson single, a Sawyer Treese walk, and a walk to Blaze Bohall with no one out but with the infield in Travis Ward hit a hard ground ball at the RV shortstop who got the force out at home keeping the bases loaded with one out and the score still 0 – 0. After an Arrowhead strike out Cory Burke came to the plate with the game still scoreless and now two out and Cory delivered a clutch two out double up the middle plating Sawyer and Blaze putting Arrowhead ahead 2 – 0. Zach Humphrey then stepped to the plate looking to get some much needed insurance runs and crushed a ground rule double to left center field scoring Travis and Corey and giving Arrowhead a 4 – 0 lead heading into the bottom of the 6th inning.

Travis Ward then set Rio Vista down 1,2,3 in the bottom of the inning with two strike outs and a ground out to Arrowhead first baseman Blaze Bohall.

Though we’re all excited about the Arrowhead victory we all need to take a moment to tip our hats to the Rio Vista team. They were as good as any team I’ve seen this year and they battled to the end. It was a shame that someone had to lose...
