PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Arlington wrestling program is designed to teach youth (male & female) ages 7-14 "folk-style" wrestling. Folk-style wrestling is similar to the type of wrestling in the Olympics and is identical to the style practiced by area high schools. Emphasis is placed on fun, safety, physical fitness and the development of proper wrestling techniques. No weight loss is encouraged or required.
Practices take place at Yorktown High School or Williamsburg Middle School two weeknights beginning in November. Weekly tournaments begin in December. Wrestlers compete by age, weight and experience with wrestlers from other local youth wrestling clubs. A final tournament is held at the beginning of March and medals are awarded to the top 3 wrestlers in each class.
The Northern Virginia Wrestling Federation (NVWF) has been in existence for more than 30 years. Teams are spread throughout Northern Virginia. Many teams are associated with high schools or middle schools and run by their coaches.
Meets are held on weekends, usually at high school gyms across Northern Virginia. Competition is organized by age, weight and experience. The groupings are ages 7-8 known as Midgets; ages 9-10 known as Juniors; ages 11-12 known as Intermediates; and ages 13-14 known as Seniors. Within each age group wrestlers are closely paired by weight. First year wrestlers are designated beginners and will typically wrestle only other beginners. Anyone with more than one year experience is considered advanced and will be grouped with other advanced wrestlers.
Meets employ a round-robin format, with wrestlers typically in a four-man grouping. Each child wrestles each of the other 3 kids in his / her grouping.
