MEET THE BETTER SPORTS CLUB OF ARLINGTON, CELEBRATING A
HALF-CENTURY OF SERVICE TO ARLINGTON COUNTY YOUTH

The Better Sports Club of Arlington is a private, non-profit, Virginia corporation, founded in 1957 to support community youth activities. The Club’s mission, as stated in its charter, is “To provide leadership, encourage and help provide recreational facilities for the development of our young men and women, to attain good health, upright character and the principle of useful citizenship through the medium of sports and good sportsmanship.” Currently, the Club’s membership is approximately 200.
Since its founding the Better Sports Club, through its fundraising activities and active participation by its members, has supported a variety of youth sports programs, independently and in conjunction with the Arlington County Recreation Department and various youth sports leagues. Sports programs for boys and girls, from ages 5 through 18, that have been developed, directed and/or sponsored by the Club include: baseball, basketball, bowling, field hockey, fishing, football, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, rowing, softball, swimming, tennis, track and wrestling. At times, the club has provided scholarship funds to graduating high school athletes, and supporting grants for athletic programs, on a rotating basis, to Arlington County high schools. These activities are supported through member dues and fundraising efforts including an annual Christmas tree lot (in partnership with the South Arlington Lions Club) and a 50-50 Super Raffle held each fall.
The showcase of the Better Sports Club’s activities has always been its annual Sports Awards Banquet. On May 30, 2006 the Club marked its 50th Annual Banquet. At the Banquet, usually attended by about 400 people, the Club pays tribute to student-athletes for their leadership, scholarship and citizenship achievements. Nominees for awards are submitted by various segments of the sports community. All nominees must reside in Arlington County or represent a team located in Arlington. Other highlights of the Banquet include the presentation of awards to Arlington’s Athlete of the Year, Coach of the Year and Sportsman of the Year.
For nearly all of the Club’s 50 years, members have gathered at monthly dinner meetings at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Arlington. These meetings, which include dinner and open bar, typically feature a prominent speaker from the world of athletics. These meetings include an annual Coaches Appreciation Night, Barbecue & Trivia Night, Crab Feast, Oktoberfest, and Holiday Party. In addition, the Club organizes outings to Washington Nationals baseball games, college basketball games, golf tournaments, and other sporting events. Annual dues are only $25. The main business of the club is managed by a Board of Governors, which meets on the last Wednesday of each month. Board meetings are usually attended by board members and officers only but all members are welcome.
In 1958, the Better Sports Club established the Arlington Sports Hall of Fame, whose objective is to perpetuate the memory of individuals who have demonstrated excellence in sports and/or who have provided outstanding leadership in the development of our youth through sports.
The Better Sports Club is open to men and women over 18 who are interested in promoting its purpose, and who are willing to participate actively in the work of the Club. Members of the Club believe “Better Sports” make for a better community, as exemplified in the Club’s slogan, “Better Sports Today, Better Citizens Tomorrow.”
