Season in full Swing!
wmump.gif
Saturday April 18th marked the opening day of Arlington Babe Ruth's Spring 2009 season. ABR has over 100 teams and nearly 1,400 boys and girls playing in five levels of play, Blastball, T-ball, machine pitch, AAA and the Majors.

Opening day turned out with beautiful weather, and the season got off to a great start, though the weather since has dampened things just a bit. However, we're all looking forward to a wonderful and fun filled season of baseball.

Good luck to one and all for a great spring season!

Spring Training to Start March 14th!
HotDogBatting.gif

Although there is still a nip in the air, ABR will be starting practices on Saturday, March 14th. The league has been busy putting all the teams together and getting that information out to our coaches. The coaches have been busy requesting practice dates and time from the county. As soon as our coaches have their practice dates, times and locations, they will be busy contacting their team to let them know where and when to be.

Many folks have put in a lot of hours lately to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible for the first weekend practices. Of course, nothing is perfect. Despite our best efforts, with over 1,300 players and over 100 teams to coordinate, there will most likely be a few of you who end up at the wrong field or show up for the wrong team. If this happens, it is not a disaster! Just give the league a call or send an email and we'll make sure the situation gets corrected.

Here's hoping for nice weather in the coming weeks, it's time to play ball!

Game Schedules Posted on the Web Site!
wmclipboard.gif
All game schedules have been posted to the web site and have been proofed. Now that doesn't mean that we may have missed something somewhere, but we're pretty sure we've found any errors the schedule may have had. Coaches can now tell their teams that the schedules are available on the web site. Please be sure to review your schedules, as they may have changed slightly since we handed out the draft schedules last week.

Go to your individual team's web page to check your schedule, or click on schedules in the left hand menu. Please let the webmaster know if you find any errors.

Thanks for your patience, and let's hope the weather starts to give us a break, cause it's just about time to play ball!

Spring Training In Full Swing!
HotDogBatting.gif
Spring training has gotten off to a fitful start, but most teams have been able to get in a practice or two and hopefully the weekend rain will hold off long enough to get more practices in. While we still have a few late registrants to place on teams, we have a near record 1,390 players on over 110 teams all having a great time!

The season will start Saturday, April 5th. Game schedules should be ready in the next couple of weeks and we are hoping to have them completed and posted to the web site by the end of March.

Opening Day Escapes Threatening Weather
wmump.gif
The sights and sounds of baseball peppered Arlington County Saturday as Arlington Babe Ruth opened it's spring 2007 season on a chilly, damp spring day. Despite threatening weather all day, we got nearly all, if not all of our games in across the county. Over 1,300 children on 106 teams were able to dance between the few rain drops and participate in the world's greatest game.

Spring Training Postponed to Start March 17th!
HotDogBatting.gif
As we try to shake the chill of the last couple of weeks out of our bones, we are busy getting ready for the start of spring training. We've been working hard the past couple of months, and especially the past week trying to place over 1,230 players (and counting) on the proper teams and get those teams scheduled for practice. We're still working hard to make sure we've placed all players on teams. We are still getting a lot of late registrations, but rest assured we are doing our best to make sure that every player is placed on the correct team.

We will be holding a series of coaches meetings, distributing equipment, rosters and practice times the week of March 5th. The league will be mailing out practice and team information to each player the weekend of March 3rd. If you have not heard from your coach or the league by the evening of Thursday, March 8th, call the ABR hotline at (703) 942-6861 and leave a message, or you can send an email to the ABR webmaster (arlbaberuth@yahoo.com) and someone will get back to you to help you out.

Many folks have put in a lot of hours lately to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible for the first weekend practices. Of course, nothing is perfect. Despite our best efforts, there will most likely be a few of you who end up at the wrong field or show up for the wrong team. If this happens, it is not a disaster! Just give the league a call or send an email and we'll make sure the situation gets corrected.

Here's hoping for nice weather in the coming weeks, it's time to play ball!

Soggy Opening Day
The sights and sounds of baseball peppered Arlington County Saturday as Arlington Babe Ruth opened it's spring 2006 season on a particularly soggy morning. We only got one ot two games in across the county on a nasty spring day. Nearly 1,300 children on 100 teams will have to wait till the coming week to play the world's greatest game.

Opening day was highlighted this year by having the first pitch thrown out by the Optimist Club's president at the all the Majors National League games at Barcroft field. The Optimist Club is Arlington Babe Ruth's major sponsor, and ABR thanks them, and the rest of our sponsors, for helping to make the 2006 season possible! Here's looking forward to a great spring of ball!

It is with the deepest regret that I must tell you that Dr. Robert J. Bonaccorso, affectionately called “Doc”, passed away this past Friday afternoon, May 5, 2006. Doc started Arlington Babe Ruth Baseball in 1980 and continued as President until a few years ago when he retired to West Virginia. This league will be forever indebted to Doc for his many years of time and dedication to the youth of Arlington County.

Please remember Doc, his wife Nancy, and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

The Arlington Babe Ruth 11 year old all stars, known as the "Arlington Nationals," employed superior pitching, flawless defense, timely hitting and aggressive base running to triumph in the District VI and VII BabeRuth Tournament over the Fourth of July weekend. The Nationals will travel to Winchester to compete in the double-elimination Virginia BabeRuth State Tournament this coming weekend, with initial games scheduled for Thursday evening (July 8, 6 PM), and Friday afternoon (July 9, at either2 or 4 PM).The Nationals rode the arm of Ryan Douthit to prevail 5 - 0 over a gritty Pioneer team in the team's opening game Friday evening. Ryan twirled a masterful one©hitter to secure the victory. Defensive "web gems" were turned in by Stephen Lubnow, C.J. Herold, and Red Dowdell. In game two, the Nationals faced their arch rival, the always tough Herndon Hornets, and edged the Herndon nine 6-4 victory in a nail biter. Joe McOwen started and was the winning pitcher, with relief help from Daniel Whitaker. Stephen Lubnow closed out the game, stranding the potentialtying and winning runs on base with pinpoint fast balls. Well done Nationals. Good luck this coming weekend at the State Tournament.

Arlington Hosts 10U District Championship
05 10U All Star team
The 10U District 7 Babe Ruth -- Arlington played host to the Cal Ripken Division 10U District 7 Championships at Jenny Dean Park. The tournament started Friday evening, July 1, with a come-from-behind win by the Arlington All-Star team. A persistent Pioneer team jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning with three hits and scored another unanswered run in the second. Arlington pitchers gave up one more run in the third inning before slamming the door on Pioneer's hitting. Then Arlington's bats came alive with nine hits in the third, fourth and fifth innings--scoring 6 runs total. Big hits by catcher Timmy Binns (3-3), secondbaseman Luke McCartin (1-2) and shortstop Cole Oldenburg (2-3), along with shutout pitching by Daniel Overbeek and Luke McCartin, fueled the come-back victory for Arlington.

The second game of the Championship tournament was Saturday at 4 p.m.--Arlington versus a tough Herndon team. Herndon's pitchers held Arlington to just three hits over six innings, while Herndon jumped to a three run lead in the first, then added two more runs by the fifth inning. In the sixth, the game got out of hand and Herndon ended up winning 13-0.

Arlington then played Pioneer at 7 p.m. that evening and came out determined to step up after getting rocked by Herndon. The Arlington line-up batted around in the first inning, scoring five runs before leaving the bases loaded. Jake Marshall, Luke McCartin, Cole Oldenburg, Jordan Smith, Matt Lowen, Frank Gulyas and Justin Snow collected the seven first inning hits. Pioneer responded with two runs in the first and one in the second. But Arlington wasn't done: A five-hit second inning chalked up six more runs and then Arlington scored three more in the third, three in the fourth and two in the fifth to swat Pioneer 19-4 in five innings. Pitching well for Arlington was Jordan Smith, Jake Marshall, Chad Wisnowski and Jimmy Waters. Nick Yore stepped up defensively at first base and Austin Jenkins provided some power off the bench at bat.

That victory took Arlington into the Championship showdown game on Sunday versus Herndon. Matt Lowen pitched well giving up only two runs into the fourth inning, and Eamon McGoldrick and Cole Oldenburg finished on the mound. But Herndon's defense proved too consistent with Arlington hitting the ball well and Herndon making play after play. Final score: Herndon 5, Arlington 0.

In a tournament marked by excellent fielding, aggressive pitching and lots of hitting, Herndon won the District Championship and Arlington took second place.   Congratutions to Herndon and good luck in the state tournament in Glen Allen. You can click here to check out the state tournament bracket.

Baseball Fundementals & Sample Practice Plans Available!

BLASTBALL!®
wmblastball.gif
Arlington Babe Ruth is providing a new program for the younger set, children aged 4 and 5 (those not yet in kindergarten). BLASTBALL!® is a fast-paced action game for kids that has more excitement and involvement for the little ones. The program teaches baseball fundamentals such as hitting, throwing and fielding while emphasizing the importance of team-work and sportsmanship. Each batter hits the ball past the fair distance marker and runs to the Blast Base – HONK! When the ball is stopped by a fielder, he/she holds the ball up and yells “Blast!” If a fielder yells “blast” before the batter honks the base, the batter is out. If the batter “honks” prior to the fielder yelling “blast”, the batter scores a run. It’s that simple. Teams of ten players offer the most fun-filled, action-packed play. Soft foam bat and ball promote safety. This looks to be a great way to introduce the sport to littlest ballplayers, without the dirt playing that is common at that age.

Children's Safety and the ABR Website
A visitor to our webpage recently raised some excellent issues re: the use of pictures and other information on the Internet and this website specifically. The text of the comment was as follows:

"I can't believe that you are putting kids names next their pictures! Why do you need pictures anyway? You are making these kids an easy target for people that prey on children. I only hope that none of these kids are hurt by your carelessness."
Tim Brown (no city listed)

The response that we attempted to mail to Mr. Brown (the response was returned as undeliverable) summarizes our position on this issue:

"I read your comment with interest this morning. I certainly understand your concern about this issue. Each coach has the choice of whether or not to add pictures to their team's website.

Acknowledging the risk that you identified, the advice that I gave to each coach was to specifically let the parents know that they were going to put pictures up and, if so, to offer to leave any child's picture out if they were concerned about the Internet issue. My children are on two teams with pictures and I had this discussion with both teams; no parents opted to omit their child's picture. I would remove a picture immediately upon a request by any parent on my team.

I will try to add a News item on this topic to demonstrate that we are not cavalier about this issue and that the choice is really up to individual parents.

Thanks again for your concern."
