Monday, May 4 Game Clock Management The game clock shall start when the home plate umpire states "PLAY" after the first batter of the game takes his place in the batter's box and the pitcher is ready to pitch. Make sure you check to see that the clock has started after the first pitch has been thrown. Time outs and pitching changes are not reasons to stop the game clock. The clock should only be stopped for a major injury. A batter typically hit by a pitch is not considered a major injury. (Use good judgement on this one!) If there is still time on the clock at the end of the bottom half of an inning you MUST start the next inning. Remember the next inning begins as soon as the third out is made. The team taking the field gets one minute or 5 warm up pitches to get ready to play. Inforce this throughout the game and the game will move along smoothly and quicker, which amounts to better played ball games. Wednesday, June 3 Sliding into First Base- Are you permitted or not? SLIDING INTO 1ST BASE - YES OR NO ? Questions have arisen about the legality of sliding into 1st base. 1st base is no different than any other base on the ballfield. The rules are the same for each base. In Little League you are not permitted to slide "head first" into ANY base, however, you are permitted to dive "head first" back into all bases. Under Rule 7.08 -Any runner is out when- (c) that runner is tagged, when the ball is alive, while off a base; EXCEPTION: A batter-runner cannot be tagged out after overrunning or oversliding first base if said batter-runner returns immediately to the base. They would not have this in the rule book if you were not permitted to slide into first base. Therfor, the answer to the question is - yes you may slide into 1st base. |
