Just a Boy
 |
|
The following poem appears on the back of the menus at Durgin-Park in Boston. We had a great meal there and the poem was a nice discovery:
Got to understand the lad - He's not eager to be bad;
If the right he always knew,He would be as old as you.
Were he now exceeding wise, He'd be just about your size;
When he does things that annoy, Don't forget - he's just a boy.
Could he know and understand, He would need no guiding hand;
But he's young and hasn't learned How life's corners must be turned.
Doesn't know from day to day There is more to life than play.
More to face than selfish joy. Don't forget - he's just a boy.
Being just a boy he'll do Much you will not want him to;
He'll be careless of his ways, Have his disobedient days.
Wilful, wild and headstrong, too, He'll need guidance kind and true;
Things of value he'll destroy, But reflect - he's just a boy.
Just a boy who needs a friend, Patient, kindly to the end;
Needs a father who will show Him the things he wants to know,
Take him with you when you walk, Listen when he wants to talk,
His companionship enjoy, Don't forget - he's just a boy.

Final Thoughts
As disappointing as tonight's loss was, we also had some fantastic times together this year. Winning is a lot more fun than losing, and we allowed our expectations to get pretty high. Frankly, those expectations were not unreasonable. This loss does not diminish what we accomplished this year...the undefeated league play, the unforgettable home game against Littleton when it seemed the entire city turned out to support us, awesome tail gate parties, the hillarious moments at the Bemidji Hampton Inn, and the boys' foray into the ice fishing huts. We actually went to THE Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, and we stood beneath the city hall in Boston where the Declaration of Independence was first read to the citizens. We walked the Freedom Trail, and made great friends with one another. We dared to dream big this year, and I am thrilled to have experienced all of this with each of you. When you don't believe in yourself, it's no big deal if you fail. It's far better to set your sights high in my opinion. I'm looking forward to our end of the season party. Rosanne Post is helping us find an appropriate venue. The team videos are in post production, and our bank account is not empty! Finally, all of our boys are relatively healthy (no broken bones, or hospitalizations), and we had a heck of a run, didn't we? Thanks to our fantastic coaches, Tom, Bruce, and Dean. Bob Taggart told me tonight we have the best coaches in the league. He's a "class-act," and I happen to agree with him.
Warriors Play-Off Bid Ends
02/26: The Front Range Panthers took fatal bite out of the Warriors tonight in 1-0 shutout that ended the season and district championship hope for Arapahoe. Both teams were tired from earlier games, but the Panthers were able to keep the heat on and John Ladd just got better as the game wore on. Congratulations to the Panthers, and good luck to both teams in the final game(s) tomorrow.
02/26: The second game round of the playoffs pitted the Warriors against Littleton, and the game was very close as usual. The teams went tit-for-tat throughout the game finishing regulation play tied 2-2. The first 4-on-4 overtime ended without a marker, and the 2nd OT was very close, but the Hawks managed to slip one by us. That means Arapahoe has to return to the rink tonight to face Front Range again. Both teams are going to be tired, but it should be a hard-fought game.
02/24: The Warriors managed to hold off an onslaught by the Front Range Panthers and advance to the next game of the double-elimination play-offs for the league and state champsionship. The Panthers played hard, as did the Warriors. John Ladd and Nick Barnett were great in goal for both teams. Even though both teams are playing with sick or injured players, they definitely showed they're both true contenders.

Warriors Battle in Bean Town
The Warriors invaded Boston last weekend in hopes of winning the prestigious Presidents Cup. They had a guided tour of Freedom Trail and watched Northeastern University take on Merrimack at historic Matthews Arena on Friday night. Some visited the USS Constitution and Bunker Hill, and we had great meals at Durgin Park and the Union Oyster House! The real fun began Saturday when Arapahoe pounded the host team, Chelmsford in a 7-0 shutout. The second and third games were equally devastating to Newport RI and Long Island NY. After the lopsided victories, the Warriors fell to the PHD Elites (an all star team) by a score of 3-0. The Warriors were without one of their defenseman, but took home the 2nd place trophy anyway. If we can just get everyone healthy and keep them that way for the state championships this weekend, we should be able to prevail. Our fist game will be against Front Range, 6:15 pm, at South Suburban Arena. We hope you'll come on out to watch and support the team!

Welcome, Kelowna Pee Wee AAA Jr Rockets
The Kelowna Pee Wee AAA Jr Rockets have arrived in town on their way to a tournament in the Springs. We have the pleasure of hosting them on the AVS rink tonight at FSC. They bested Arvada last night 4-1. This looks like a great team. They've also finished their season undfeated. Congratulations, Kelowna! Rumor has it that one of their players is also an accomplished 747 pilot! Check out their web site at Kelowna Pee Wee AAA. Steve, bring the MUSIC! Tom, U2. Game time is 7:10 pm.
Post Game Report: The game was spirited, and all of the boys played with heart. The Rockets burned the Warriors 3-1. The teams exchanged pins, and we wish the Rockets best of luck in the Springs tournament! Thanks for coming over to play us!

District Playoffs in Phoenix
Of course, we have to win State first before we can go to District play-offs in Phoenix, but it's not too early to start thinking about travel and accomodations. The web site is Holiday Inn West. You don't need to make the hotel reservations, but you do need to send me your rooming list (occupant names). You're on your own for air reservations. Go Arapahoe!

League Play Finished Undfeated!
Our final PWAA game of the season was played last night against the winless DU Jr Pioneers. The Warriors officially finish the season with 25 points, three ties and no losses. Going into the league/state play-offs as the second seed makes our first opponent the Front Range Panthers on Thursday, 02/24, at 6:15 pm. All of our play-off games will be at the South Suburban Arena. Before playoffs, however, we have one more home scrimmage against Kelowna BC on 02/15 at 7:10 pm. Then, we're off to Boston for the Chelmsford Presidents Cup tournament. The next possible game against Littleton, if the Warriors fend off Front Range in the first game of the playoffs, will be Saturday, the 26th at 09:45 am (also at South Suburban). Our play-offs are double-elmination, so we'll have to beat the second best team twice to win the state title. The Rocky Mountain District is taking the top two teams from our league to the District tournament in March, so it's possible for a team to lose the state championship, and go on to win districts and nationals. Talk about a fly in the ointment, eh? Hopefully, we'll get to win all three. Way to go Arapahoe!

Sweet Revenge
The long awaited rematch between the Warriors and the Foothills Flyers had a decidedly satisfying conclusion yesterday. Arapahoe smothered the Flyers redeeming themselves in a 6-2 victory. Ben Carey and Trey Post both scored twice. The Warriors defense (the entire team) held the Flyers to only 5 shots on goal. We may not be able to get back the loss to Omaha, but this game was a nice reminder of the Warriors' dominance. Wins over Front Range and Arvada in the championships will cement their place in history and a couple of overdue victories against the Hawks will be the icing on the cake. First, we've got to finish the regular season schedule remaining undefeated, however. The Warriors take on Colorado Springs and DU this weekend.

Wow! Warriors Hawks Tie Again
You know, it's not even possible to overstate the excitement and thrill of today's rematch between the top two teams in the CCYHL. The tail-gate party, the signs, the noise, the crowd....this was even better than the stories I've read of the Minnesota High School Championships- and this was just a regular season game! Now I wish we'd had FBVideo tape the game, but the good news is that the rivalry and tension only builds as we head into the play-offs! Another tie- Wow! That about sums it up. Way to go, Arapahoe!! This only makes the eventual victory even sweeter.

Home Streatch
The Warriors are into the final phase of the season with only three more games to play before the league & state play-offs. The top four teams in the league will play in the CCYHL and state championship tournament 02/24-02/27. Although anything can happen in the last three games, it doesn't look like any of the other teams in the league can supplant Arapahoe or Littleton. It looks like the other two teams in the play-offs will be Front Range and Arvada, but you never know for sure until the buzzer sounds on the last game of the season. This year, the top two teams from the CCYHl championship will go to district play-offs in Phoenix. You can bet the Warriors are planning on being one of those two teams. Next game is this Saturday at 3:10 pm vs the Littleton Hawks. In our last contest, the teams tied 1-1. This game will likely determine which team will finish in first place at the end of the season. The Hawks play Front Range the very next day, and the Panthers are on the prowl of late. Hopefully, the Warriors will play their best game of the year on Saturday. Come on out and cheer on the Warriors in the most highly anticipated rematch of the season! The game is at the Family Fun Center on Peoria at Arapahoe in Centennial. We'll be playing on the Avalanche rink which is to your left as you walk into the facility. Be sure to show your team spirit by wearing the Arapahoe Colors, Navy & Maize (please, no red or black ;-) See you there!

Warriors Take 2nd Place in T.O.
The Warriors were overwhelmed by the Mississauga Ice Jets in the Championship game of the Humberview Huskies AA Invitational over the MLK weekend. They played great and won all four of their games with two shutouts on their way to the tournament finals. Highlight's were Steve's "Lord of the Dance" performance at Plaza Flemnco and our team visit to the Hockey Hall of Fame. I was amazed to see that Wayne Gretzky's first pair of skates were not Vapor XX's! Also for the 2nd time in as many trips, the host hotel commented that we had "the best-behaved youth hockey team" they had ever hosted. Way to go, Arapahoe!
Tuesday, January 4
Lumberjack Champions!
The Warriors returned from the State of Hockey with a Division Championship and a very respectable 5-2-2 record. The Bemidji hosts were fantastic. We had so much fun in 8 days that the time really flew by. It seemed like we were there for only a fraction of that time. There were many highlights including an outdoor "friendly" with the host team. These folks really know how to organize and pull off a great tournament. If you're looking for a lot of fun and great hockey, don't be afraid of the cold weather. Register your Pee Wee AA team for next year's event at Paul Bunyan Hockey and be sure to stay at the Hampton Inn & Suites.

12/26 Scrimmage vs Omaha Gladiators
Our 12/26 practice originally scheduled for 11:40 am has been moved to 4:10 pm so that we can have a friendly scrimmage with the Omaha Gladiators Pee Wee AA team. They're headed to a tournament in the Springs and will stop on their way to stretch their legs and have some fun with us. The game will run from 4:10 to 5:30 pm. Let's give them a warm welcome before we head off to Minnesota.
Tuesday, December 14
Practice Added 12/18
A new practice has been added to our schedule. It's this Sunday, 12/18, from 11:50 am to 01:00 pm. We're inviting Foothills Pee Wee A for a rematch. Hopefully they'll accept. More later. Reminder: bring those completed travel consent forms to practice and Kathy Johnson will notarize them for you.

Welcome, RMSS Teams!
To all Rocky Mountain Silver Stick Pee Wee AA Teams: welcome to Mile High Hockey! We hope you're having a great time at this year's tournament. Regrettably, our team missed the deadline for entry, but we'd still like to play you. Currently, we're the number one Pee Wee AA team in the state. Our record is 14-0-1, we're a mixture of 92's and 93's and we need some scrimmages. If you'd like to arrange some ice with us while you're here, please contact team manager, ron.levi@comcast.net. Good luck and best wishes for a great tournament experience.

Warriors Shut Out Arvada
The Warriors remain undefeated in league play following today's 1-0 shut out of Arvada. Nick Barnett stopped all eight shots by Arvada. Way to go, Nick!! The Warriors Defense was solid and the forwards kept the pressure on all game long. Conor Donovan got the game-winning and only goal on an assist from Evan Lloyd and Ben Carey.
Sunday, November 21
Boucing Back
The Warriors bounced back from a disappointing loss to the Foothills Pee Wee A team to overpower the Jr Tigers 5-0. Although the Flyers ended our unbeaten streak in a scrimmage, Arapahoe is still mercifully undefeated in league play. The boys returned to their expected form, and hopefully will remain a step ahead of the competition for the remainder of the season. We'll see what Minnesota has in store for us, though.
Sunday, November 14
Still Unbeaten!! 12-0-1
Now that was a fun weekend, wasn't it? The Warriors showed little sign of the rust that could have been present from not having played a game in two weeks. In spite of the 1-1 tie, we definitely out-played Littleton, and I'm sure we'll win big against them next time. Hyland Hills started off strong, but our boys kept the pressure on- lighting the lamp 3 times to the Jags' 1. This the year for Arapahoe. Maybe one of those Minnesota teams will give us the "whuppin" we need, but it won't be comin' from the Hawks this year!!

Bemidji Update
I received a note from the Bemidji tournament director today. He says, "The tournament field will have a fantastic variety: Ontario, Iowa, Michigan, North Dakota, a couple Minnesota teams, and probably 2 Winnipeg teams, as well as your Colorado team. This tournament will be vastly superior to last year!" With the games Tom is lining up, this is going to be a good test and a lot of fun for the whole team.

Warriors advance to 11-0
The Pee Wee AA team won it's eleventh game today, its third league game, against the Front Range Panthers. With several players recuperating from illnesses, one goalie out of town, and another goalie injured two nights before the game, Coach called up two goalies from the Pee Wee A team. Robby Meadows filled in for Curt Morris and held the Panthers to only one goal. The final score was 4-1 with goals from Brahm Berthold, Austin Levi, Conor Donovan, and Evan Lloyd. Assists came from Kevin Tsuji (2), Garrett Eastep,and Tanner Ottenbreit. The next game is against Littleton, 11/12, 7:30 pm- it's sure to be standing room only!

Tournament Update
The Warriors are lined up for a busy tournament season. Our first big event will be Silver Stick Regionals in Westminster 12/09-12/12. Then it's on to the State of Hockey, Minnesota, after Christmas. We'll be staying at the Sheraton Bloomington our first nigh. Next, we'll move North to Duluth where we'll be staying at the Comfort Suites. After a couple of days of hockey and curling, we'll continue on to our tournament destination city, Bemidji, where we'll stay at the all new Hampton Inn! After ringing in the new year in Bemidji, we'll head back to base camp in Duluth for our last night before heading back home on Monday
After the Paul Bunyan Tournament, our next event will be the Humberview AA Invitational in the home of the NHL Hockey Hall of Fame, Toronto, Ontario. Our February tournament is still up in the air. We'll either be in the unbelievable Quebec International Pee Wee Tournament or the grand old hockey bastion of Boston for the Chelmsford Presidents Cup. We should know within a couple of weeks if we are accepted into the Quebec tourney.
Be sure to check out the Bemidji tournament web site, Paul Bunyan International Hockey Tournament. In spite of our 8-0 pre-season record, it seems the year is getting off to a slow start with our first league game rescheduled to this weekend, but things are about to get really hectic and exciting so hang on to your hats!
Wednesday, October 6
Unbeaten Pre-Season
The Warriors are off to a great start with an 8-0 pre-season record. They're averaging 4 goals per game more than their opponents, three times as many shots on goal, and their penalty kill has been very stingy with a 94.4 per cent success rate. Solid goal-tending and tenacious fore-checking is keeping the other teams scratching their heads in search of a solution. Now, it's on to the regular season. Keep up the great work, boys. Way to go Arapahoe!

Warriors Win Early Bird Tournament
Congratualations, Warriors! The team is now 6-0 heading into league play. Outstanding work by the coaches and players. Way to go!
Team Meeting 09/21/04 - FSC
We'll be having a parent meeting beginning at 7:30 Tuesday night, 09/21. Please be prepared to list your foursomes (so far) for the golf tournament, dinner-only guests, and auction items. We'll find some "quiet" space when we get to the rink. Probably upstairs overlooking the Hamilton rink, behind the play-fort-climbing-slides-apparatus thing. Also, I'll be handing out picture order forms. The preliminary game schedule has been posted to this web site and is being updated on Hockeyweb.com
Scrimmages 09/18-09/19
Arvada cancelled, however Front Range accepted. We'll be playing Front Range on Saturday, 09/18, 3:30 pm at FSC. We're still on for Sunday, 09/19 with Hyland Hills at 12:40.

PWAA Golf/Auction Fundraiser: Note from Dorna
Hi Everyone - I will have dinner tickets available during the scrimmages this weekend as well as throughout next week. The tickets are $10.00 each. Please talk to your friends and extended family to recruit some more bodies for our dinner and auction. We have some incredible items this year and we are sure that everyone will have a good time.
The dinner will include spaghetti/salad/rolls and some type of appetizer. Dessert is not included -but I was hoping that a few families might bring some brownies or cookies. Let me know if you would be interested.
For those of you who are golfing - a dinner ticket is included in your golf package. I will need payment for all other family members by Sept 24th. We are asking for pre-payment because the kitchen needs a specific head count by Monday Sept 27 and they are billing our team based upon the numbers that we provide.
Thanks in advance for making this a successful event!! Please let me know if you have any question or concerns. Dorna

DU Opening Night Tickets
The DU Pioneers Hockey organization is offering us a fundraiser. Opening night is 10/22 at 7:35 pm. Tickets are $19 each, and our team gets to keep $3 for each one sold. Let Ron know how many you want and they'll be handed out at the Golf/Auction Fundraiser on 10/01.
Gold Canyon Candle Fundraiser: 09/28 Due Date
If every family sells 11 candles, I believe we'll net $1,000. This is a great product that looks like it would be very popular and easy to sell. Deadline for orders is 09/28.
