TURNOVERS AND TRICKPLAYS DOOM EAGLES GOLD, 22-0
Five turnover and some trick plays proved costly as theEagles Gold were shut out by the Castaic Cougars, 22-0, on another hot day atAgoura High School Stadium Saturday.
The two teams played evenly in the first quarter with thefirst stanza ending in a scoreless tie. However, after the Eagles startedthe second quarter on their own 14, their first possession was damaging. Theirpass in the flat was picked off by a Cougar defender who easily returned it fortheir first touchdown, giving them a 6-0 lead. They then scored on the conversion, staking them to an 8-0lead with 10:05 left in the half.
That score would prove to be all of the Cougars would need.
Tyler Bogeaus took the ensuing kickoff to the Cougars 36yard line, giving the Eagles good starting field position. Passes to Jordan Dake andOtto Jursch, sandwiching a four yard run by Jordan Rogers, moved the chains for the Eagles. However, their drive was doomed by afumbled pitchout.
The Eagles again held the Cougars and started at the Cougars44 yard line. Drew Ramos carriedthe ball 12 yards and a pass to Kaveh Torabian moved the ball to the Cougars 20yard line. However, the Cougarsthwarted the drive with another timely pick at their own 18 yard line and thehalf ended with the Cougars holding an 8-0 lead in an evenly played first half.
The roof gave way on the Eagles on the start of the secondhalf. The Cougars used a tricktwo-pass play to catch the Eagles defenders off guard, scoring on a 60 yardpass play. The Eagles stopped theconversion try short of the goal, but the Cougars had a 14-0 lead with 11:05left in the third quarter.
The Eagles started on their own 12 and a hard run by JordanRogers netted 21 yards giving the Eagles some breathing room in field position. However, they drive went no further andthey had to punt to the Cougars.
At his point, the heat took his toll on the Eaglesdefense. The Cougars started ontheir own 39 yard line, but quickly moved the chains to the Eagles 24 with a 32yard run through the Eagles defense. A six yard pass followed by a 24 yard pass got the Cougars to paydirtand a 22-0 lead.
Scrambling to get back in the game, the Eagles completed twopasses to Otto Jursch and reached the Cougars 31 yard line. However, the Eagles suffered theirfourth turnover, another interception. The Cougars couldn’t do anything with the gift as they suffered theirfirst turnover, fumbling the ballback on the Eagles 34.
The Eagles quandered their opportunity, fumbling for thesecond time and giving the ball back to the Cougars.
Neither team could move the ball final five minutes and thegame ended with Cougars taking home a 22-0 victory.
Eagles Battle Seminoles and the Wind
In a battle of defense and field position, the Eaglescame up short, losing to the Santa Clarita Seminoles 16-0. The game was actually closer than the final scoreindicated, however.Aside from their opening drive when the Eagles startedat the Seminoles’ 48 yard line, the first half saw theEagles deep in their own territory and unable to move the ball. But Jeremy Dake nailed two 50-yardpunts to push the Seminoles to their side of the field and the first half endedin a scoreless tie.The Eagles and Seminoles traded possessions in thethird quarter and the Eagles appeared to hold the Seminoles again at the Eagles28 yard line. However, on fourthdown, the Seminoles tried a long pass which was intercepted by the Eagles’defender at their three yard line, putting the Eagles deep in their ownterritory. That play, which was theequivalent of a punt, proved to bethe turning point in the game.On their possession, the Eagles fumbled the ball butrecovered it in the end zone, giving the Seminoles a safety andpossession. Following a shortkickoff, the Eagles scored on a sweep and a two point conversion and the thirdperiod ended with the Eagles suddenly down, 10-0.
In the fourth quarter, the Eagles were unable to movethe ball, on the ground or in the air . They were three and out on their first drive and lost 13 yards on theirnext drive. However, on thatsecond possession, a 43 yard punt moved the Seminoles back totheir own 38 yard line.
Even so, the Noles ground out yardage during the next two minutes and scored the finalpoints with a minute left in the contest.
Despite battling the wind and a bigger Seminole team,the Eagles played a very strong defensive game, shutting out their opponent formost of the game.
The Eagles next game is anaway game against Castaic Blue at 10:00 am.
