American 11-12's end in 3rd place in District 10
The 11-12 Americans were riding a five game win streak and were one game away from making the District 10 finals. Only the Chantilly Americans stood in their way.Things were looking good for starting pitcher Joe Darcy as he retired the first two Chantilly batters. Then a solo home run by Chantilly shook things up but Joe stared down the clean-up batter and Chantilly's starting pitcher and made him chase an 0-2 pitch that Joe fielded to retire the side. Joe led off the inning facing the batter he just retired and took the first pitch screaming down the left field line for a double. Doug Gressly fell behind 0-2 in the count and took the third pitch deep to left and cleared the fence to make it 2-1 ANSLL. Joe kept them off the board in the second, Luke Lundy and Joe reached on a walk and Nick Santos reached on an error but ANSLL could not produce a run despite loading the bases. The third inning started with some controversy as a deep fly ball hit the top of the fence on the yellow covering and bounced back into play, however the ump didn't see it that way despite the ball landing on the field of play and being thrown back in to hold the runner at second. The next batter lined a double and then with two outs Chantilly strung 2 hits and home run to go up 6-2 with two outs. Another hit to deep center had a runner trying to score but a play at the plate had Luke leap for the ball, get his legs taken out and slam to the ground but somehow in the fall he managed to throw his glove down and tag the runner to record the third out in spectacular fashion. ANSLL again could not produce a run despite Sean Workman drawing a walk. The fourth was a tough one as Steven Schwartz came in to relieve Joe and after retiring the first batter a few hits and two errors allowed five more Chantilly runs. Kyle Peich reached on a walk for ANSLL and advanced to second as he hurdled a grounder by Alex Gebler and then scored on Joe's second double of the day, but ANSLL again could not string hits together and were down 11-3 after 4. Chantilly continued to generate offense and put up 3 more runs in the fifth on another homer. ANSLL responded with walks to Tyler Pacak and Nolan Gilbert to start the inning and Luke came to bat and destroyed a 3-1 pitch deep over the trees in right field. (If not for the trees it might have landed in the medical building parking lot). But ANSLL could not tack on any more runs.Tyler Pacak had relieved Steven Schwartz in the fifth but Chantilly continued to get timely hits and scored a few more runs and with two on Steven Schrade snagged a grounder at third and fired to Doug at first to end the inning. Doug led off the sixth with a single and Jack Owens reached on a fielder’s choice. Tyler and Nolan Gilbert all reached base but Chantilly was able to mix in two fielders choice outs but Luke came through with a single to score Jack but another fielders choice ended ANSLL's run for the title.Overall ANSLL tips their hat to the Chantilly Americans as they played a solid game in the field and mixed in 7 home runs with timely hitting to advance to the finals with a 19-7 win.The ANSLL 11-12 Americans ended with 5-2 record in the tournament and finished third in the District. The kids should be very proud of what they accomplished, after losing the first game and facing elimination every game they came from behind in 4 of the 5 wins with two in extra innings.
Great job boys that was a great run!!
