11/12 Nationals Lose Two
After an opening win against Chantilly American, the 11/12 ANSLL National
team played hard but lost two games and was eliminated from the tournament.
On Tuesday night, they faced a very strong Lower Loudoun American team at
the Ridge. In the first inning, the Lower Loudoun pitcher yielded a single
to Alex Lewis, but recorded three strikeouts to shut the door. Joe Carns
started on the hill for ANSLL, and a very aggressive Lower Loudoun team had
a hit, a walk and an error to load the bases. Alex Lewis then started a
nifty double play on a grounder up the middle. In the second, Connor Maloy
had a solid hit to left center, but was stranded.
In the bottom of the second, Lower Loudoun was able to plate six runs on a
walk and six hits, including a three run homer by the clean-up hitter. Matt
Hrynkow took the mound with two outs and was able to stop the bleeding.
ANSLL came right back in the top of the third as Jeremy Johnson just missed
a home run to right center, as the ball hit the top of the fence, and Jeremy
ended up as second. Joey Coogan then hit a fly ball to deep right field,
but the right fielder made a lunging over the shoulder catch as Jeremy
tagged up and took third, and then scored on a wild pitch. That turned out
to be ANSLL's last threat, as ANSLL was only able to muster a single by
David Paik in the 4th and 5th innings.
Lower Loudoun scored three in the bottom of the third, and went down 1-2-3
in the 4th to make it a 9-1 game entering the 5th. Lower Loudoun's leadoff
batter reached on an error, and then with one out- their third baseman ended
the game with an opposite field home run to make the score 11-1.
On Thursday night, ANSLL National traveled to Cub Run to face SYA Central.
SYA Central opened the first inning with a walk. With one out, their
shortstop had a sharp single to left field, which was followed up by a
three-run homerun. Jeremy Johnson then settled down and struck out the next
batter before inducing a grounder up the middle that Michael Szabo made a
fine play on to end the inning. ANSLL counter in the bottom of the first,
as Joey Coogan had a one out double, and then Alex Lewis drilled a two-run
homer to right center field to make the score 3-2. David Paik then singled,
and Joe Carns hit a sharp grounder that turned into the second out at
second. Connor Maloy then reached base on an error, leaving runners at
first and third. ANSLL then got its running game going, as Connor stole
second with Joe Carns taking home on the throw to tie the game at 3.
In the top of the second, the leadoff batter reached on an ANSLL error, and
came around to score on a double. With one out, the runner reached third on
a wild pitch, and then tried to score on a ball that bounced in the dirt.
Joey Coogan blocked the pitch, scampered after it and with a dive, tagged
the runner out at the plate. After another hit put runners on first and
third, another ANSLL error allowed a run to score, making the score 5-3.
ANSLL was retired in ordered in the second and the third. SYA Central had
one runner reach via a walk, but he was gunned down trying to steal third as
Paul Leonard applied the tag. In the top of the 4th, Jeremy Johnson was able
to retire the side around two walks, ending his night with 5 strikeouts.
The second out was recorded on a fine play by catcher Joey Coogan as he
pounced on a bunt and in one diving motion threw to first, just nipping the
runner. In the 4th inning for ANSLL, Joe Carns reached on a hard hit single
up the middle, but ANSLL was unable to advance baserunners.
In the top of the 5th inning, Joey Coogan moved to the mound, and gave up a
run on two ANSLL errors, before striking out the last two batters with a
runner on 2nd. In the bottom of the 5th, Jeremy Johnson raised the ANSLL
hopes with a hit, but was erased at second on a terrific play by the SYA 3rd
baseman on a hard hit ball, and then a ground out ended the inning. Joey
then retired the side without incident in the top of the 6th. In the bottom
of the 6th, Joe Carns reached base, but the threat ended on another good
play by the SYA 3rd baseman, ending the game, and ANSLL's tournament hopes.
Clark Girardin, Matt Hrynkow, Henry Truelove, Alex Paik, Paul Leonard,
Michael Szabo, Connor Maloy, David Paik, Joe Carns, Alex Lewis, Joey Coogan
and Jeremy Johnson should be proud of the effort they put forth, and with
the positive way they represented Annandale North Springfield Little League.
They never gave up, and battled in every game, and remained upbeat and
energetic at all times - and were a credit to our league.
