ANSLL 11's finish 5th in District 10
The American 11's traveled to Lower Loudon and things started shakey in the top of the first with Lower Loudoun getting runners to 2nd and 3rd with one out. A sharp line drive to right was snagged by a sliding Steven Schwartz who popped up and fired a bullet to second where Alex Gebler scooped it and held on to coplete the double play and end the threat. ANSLL came to bat and Nick Santos worked a walk and Luke Lundy hit a towering fly ball to right that the right fielder misplayed and allowed Luke to take second and Nick flew around to score the games first run. ANSLL couldn't get Luke home after he moved to third on a passed ball and Steven Schrade took the mound with a 1-0 lead.
The second innning LL was able to tie it up on a first and third play that Luke threw the runner out at second and Alex was primed to nail the runner at home but the runner had pinned his glove and Alex was unable to get the ball out to throw home. Steven Schrade was able to get out of the inning on a fly ball to CF reeled in by Kyle Peich and a shot to the hot corner which Sean Workman backhanded and fired to first to get the runner. ANSLL was unable to move runners when Steven Schrade and Kyle each walked but a hard hit grounder to short was fielded right in the basepath of Steven who couldn't stop or go and he was tagged out and then the throw to first to completed a double play.
The third inning proved to be a tough one, Steven Schrade came within an inch of fielding a sharp combacker to the mound that skimmed off his glove and went to into center. He K'd the next batter, but walked the next two on very, very close pitches. With the breaks not going ANSLL's way a single and double plated 3 runners and Steven Schwartz came in relief. A single to right plated one more and then Steven Schwartz got LL on "goofy pitches", as LL players called them. Steven started mixing a knucker and change-up with the fastball and retired the next two.
ANSLL was facing a pitcher who was throwing smoke but not very accurate......until now. Nick Santos reached first on an error by the SS and moved to second on a passed ball. Nick was advancing to third on another passed ball and looked as if he beat the tag to everyone but the one making the call. Little did ANSLL know that would be the last baserunner as ANSLL was unable to get a baserunner in the final three innings and only sending 18 batters to the plate for the game.
ANSLL threw just about everything they had, 5 pitchers, knuckleballs, sliders and even an ephus pitch, but a "floating" strike zone had 5 ANSLL pitchers combine for 12 walks. Throw in a few well placed hits by LL and ANSLL found themselves down 15-1 and finishing 5th in the District 10 tournament.
