ANSLL American (9/10) routs Lower Loudoun with Monster Rally!
The ANSLL American team made the road trip to Lower Loudoun and came back
happy, routing the hosts 13-3 in a game shortened by the "10 run rule".
ANSLL started shaky, but finished strong. Pitcher Doug Gressly made quick
work of the host Loudoun squad in the first, but ANSLL could get nothing
going in the home half.
Loudoun struck in the 2nd, with a hit and 4 walks to score 3 times, but a
nice grab in deep right field by Ryan Kane helped keep them from busting it
open, and then Gressly settled down to strike out the final two batters to
end the frame. But, the ANSLL bats went quietly again in the second as
ANSLL mustered only singles by Evan Eschenburg and Andrew Santaniello
through the first two innings.
Top of the 3rd the Loudoun cleanup hitter launched a long blast to deep center,
but Chris Calbi made a lunging grab to rob a sure triple. Gressly retired
the next two hitters on a comebacker and another K, to set the stage for the
ANSLL fireworks.
The bottom of the 3rd was unbelievable. With one down and bases full, Calbi
finally got ANSLL on the scoreboard with a 2-run single, scoring Grant
Thompson and Evan Eschenburg. Kevin Moore grounded out to short, forcing
Calbi, but Gressly scored on the play and the game was knotted up at 3 with
2 outs. Then the ANSLL hitters really got it going, and the next 11 batters
reached base! Jackson Boehman lined a single and Matt Dennis drew a walk to
load the bases. Greg Lynch then roped a shot the skipped off the 3rd base
bag and ended up in the LF corner for a 3-run triple to put ANSLL in the
lead for good, 6-3. Greg then streaked home on a pitch that skipped away
from the catcher, and it was 7-3. But, ANSLL started another rally as Tyler
Choate and Grant Thompson drew walks and then Eschenburg plated them both
when he rocketed a double to left. Evan wisely scooted to 3rd on the relay
throw home, and when it skipped away from the catcher, he snuck home and it
was 10-3. Again ANSLL kept the momentum, as Gressly walked, Calbi smacked
his 2nd hit of the inning and then after Kevin Moore walked again the bases
were loaded. This time, Jackson Boehman rocketed a bases clearing double,
his 2nd hit of the inning upping the lead to 13-3. In the 3rd inning, ANSLL
sent 18 batters to the plate, including 12 after there were 2 outs!
With the 10 rule looming, ANSLL was hoping to make quick work of the hosts
in the top of the 4th. Gressly was also approaching his pitch count max.
The ANSLL magical night continued though. After a leadoff single, Gressly
K'd the next batter as Tyler Choate held onto a tough 3rd strike foul tip.
Then on a WP, Tyler barehanded the ball as it caromed high off the backstop
and fired a one hop strike to shortstop Eschenburg to easily nail the
would-be basestealer. The next pitch was Gressly's 75th and last, and
another nice play by Evan at short ended the inning and sent ANSLL home
after only 3 1/2 innings with a 13-3 win!
With half of the 16 teams now eliminated from the tourney, next up for ANSLL
American is Fairfax National, Saturday at 2pm. Site tbd after other
tournament games on Thursday.
