McNeill, Machado Combine on 16-0 Shutout at Ferullo

Ryan McNeil
Ryan McNeill, 5 Inn, 2 hits, 6 K's

Woburn, MA- Ryan McNeill went the first five innings to pick up the win and Rob Machado worked a perfect sixth and seventh as the two combined on a two-hit shutout of the Mooney Dental Tanners 16-0 at Ferullo Field in Woburn on Tuesday evening.

McNeill, who claimed all Northeast-10 honors at Merrimack this spring, picked up his first ICL win in a Chiefs uniform yielding just a couple of singles while striking out six. Machado, the former Malden Catholic standout and current UMass-Amherst right-hander, retired all six batters he faced including one strikeout in his ICL debut.

Catcher Bob McCarthy led the Chiefs 14 hit attack collecting four singles while Peter Copa and rookie Dario Pizzano chalked up three RBI apiece.

The Chiefs scored early and often in this one, opening up a 9-0 lead after two innings. In the first inning, the Chiefs sent ten men to the plate and scored five times. Brendan Pyburn got things underway when he drew a walk from Tanners starter and loser Mike Nardelli. Pyburn promptly stole second and came around to score on McCarthy’s first single of the game. Jeff Bercume drew another walk but Nardelli struck out Hal Landers for the first out. Veteran Brian Macrina then gave the Chiefs a 2-0 lead when he delivered a RBI single that scored McCarthy. Mike Andre drew the inning’s third walk and Copa followed with a RBI fielder’s choice that plated Bercume. Pizzano made it 5-0 with a gap shot double to left-center scoring Macrina and Copa.

It went to 9-0 in the second with the Chiefs scoring four times after two were out. Landers and Macrina both worked two out walks and Nardelli was lifted in favor of Joe Harvey. Andre greeted Harvey with a line single to right center that scored Landers. Copa followed with another single scoring Macrina and when Pizzano reached on an infield error scoring Andre and Copa, the Chiefs were out to a 9-0 lead.

A Macrina RBI single in the third and a Copa double and sacrifice fly from Mike Barbati ran the lead to a dozen after four innings.  The Chiefs added four more to make it 15-0 in the fifth on singles by McCarthy and Pizzano sandwiched around two infield errors and two hit batsmen. The sixteenth and final run of the night came in the sixth on singles from Pyburn, Bercume and Matt Boleski.

Another Day, Another Postponement- Chiefs Head to Woburn on Tuesday at 5:45 PM

Martini
Joe Martini Worked in Relief on Sunday

Medford, MA- A late afternoon downpour put the final touch on another postponed game on Monday night. The postponement was the eighth of the year for the Chiefs and third time a game against the Lexington Blue Sox was forced to be called off.

The infield at Huskins Field was drying out during the day from Sunday night's rains. The downpour hit the area about 3:30 PM. Another bout of heavy showers hit the field shortly after 7:00 PM Monday evening as well.

Next up for the Chiefs is a 5:45 PM date with the Mooney Dental Tanners at Ferullo Field in Woburn on Tuesday.

The Chiefs were coming off a 9-7 win in Wakefield on Sunday. Dylan Ellis, Joe Martini, Chris Labriola and Chris Foundas all worked for the Chiefs with Foundas coming away with the win retiring all five batters he faced to close out the game.

Chiefs Somehow Take 9-7 Error Filled Game Over Wakfield

McCarthy
Bob McCathy, 3 for 4, 3 RBI

Wakefield, MA- Horrendous defense, miserable early April like weather, and about as many fans as you could put in the backseat of a mid-size car.

Make no mistake about it, Cooperstown is not calling for a tape of this one!

Those were some of the components that came into play on Sunday afternoon at Walsh Field in Wakefield when the Chiefs somehow came away with a 9-7 win.

The Chiefs opened up a 6-1 lead and saw the Merchants come back to tie things up at 7-7 before putting up two seventh inning runs to grab the win.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead off Kevin Tidmarsh in the first inning on a two out RBI single from Hal Landers which scored Brendan Pyburn who led off with a single.

The Merchants came right back in the home half of the first on a Mike Sorrentino RBI single surrendered by Chiefs starter Dylan Ellis to tie it up at 1-1.

A two out error by the Merchants opened up the floodgates in the top of the second when the Chiefs scored five unearned runs. After two were out, Mike Barbati walked and Pyburn reached on the infield error. A Bob McCarthy single scored Barbati to make it 2-1. Jeff Bercume followed with a line shot single to right which scored Pyburn giving the Chiefs a 3-1 lead. Northeast-10 Player of the Year Mike Baillargeon made his presence felt when he lifted a long triple to the fence in left-center scoring McCarthy and Bercume to up the advantage to 5-1. Landers then delivered a line drive single to center pushing Baillargeon across and giving the Chiefs a 6-1 lead.

Ellis held Wakefield scoreless in the second and third innings, despite some shoddy defense, and Tidmarsh settled down and blanked the Chiefs in the third and fourth innings.

The Merchants sent ten men to the plate in the bottom of the fourth and scored four runs (two earned) to make it a one run game at 6-5.

Tidmarsh again got the Chiefs side in order in the top of the fifth and the Merchants tied the game up at 6-6 in the bottom of the inning. Assumption’s Joe Martini came on in relief of Ellis to start the inning and was victimized by another unearned run when Alex LiDonni and Josh Band both reached on errors.

The Chiefs regained the lead at 7-6 in the top of the sixth courtesy of a Pyburn double and another McCarthy RBI single.

The Merchants got another unearned gift from the Chiefs in the bottom of the sixth to re-tie the game at seven. Taylor Von Kriegenberg reached when Matt Boleski misplayed his fly ball to left. Southpaw Chris Labriola came on for Martini to face lefty Jason Roth. Roth sacrificed Von Kriegenberg to second before another lefty, Matt Russo, took a Labriola offering to deep left for a RBI triple.

Enter Chris Foundas. The ICL all-star closer in 2008 struck out Kevin Johnson swinging and got pinch hitter Sam Choate to ground out to Baillaegeon stranding Russo at third with the go ahead run.

Hal Landers led off the Chiefs seventh with a single to center and stole second. Mike Andre then lined a single to right with Landers stopping at third. Eddie McDonald pinch ran for Andre and with runners on the corners, reliever Kevin Flight got pinch hitter Bill Catlado swinging. Boleski then got a big chunk of redemption when he lined a Flight pitch to right scoring Landers. Barbati followed with a single up the middle that plated McDonald and gave the Chiefs a 9-7 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Foundas got LiDonni and Band to both pop to Pyburn at short and he put an end to the day’s follies when he got Steve Langone to fly to Bercume in centerfield.

With the win the Chiefs go to 5-1-1 on the season. They host the Lexington Blue Sox at Tufts University on Monday at 6:00 PM. Right-hander Ryan McNeill will draw the starting assignment for the Chiefs.

Bombers Blank Chiefs, 5-0

Pyburn
Brendan Pyburn Broke Up No-Hit Bid

Medford, MA- Bobby Giarratani twirled a complete game two-hitter and Mike Adessa drilled a two out, two run home run in the sixth inning as the Testa Corp. Bombers knocked off the Chiefs 5-0 at Tufts University on Friday evening.

Giarratani, from Denison College in Ohio, took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Brendan Pyburn broke up the bid with a single to right field. The Chiefs Dan Lozeau matched Giarratini pitch for pitch for 5.2 innings. Adessa finally broke the scoring drought with a sixth inning line shot over the right field wall scoring Nick Martinho, who had singled, ahead of him.

The Chiefs had several chances to break into the scoring column, leaving runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings.

In the bottom of the second inning, J.P. Pollard drew a lead off walk and Giarratani got Hal Landers swinging for the first out. A Mike Barbati fielder’s choice moved Pollard to second and the Bombers Mike Navarro kept it a scoreless game when he ran down a deep Mike Andre line drive to straightaway right to end the inning.

The defensive gems continued for the Bombers in the bottom of the third. Catcher Eddie McDonald reached on Testa’s only error of the night on a slow hit ball that was mishandled by shortstop Joe Papa. McDonald went to second on a passed ball but Giarratani got Pyburn to bounce back to him for the first out. Brian Macrina followed with a ten pitch at bat then ended when Giarratani finally got him swinging on a 3-2 pitch. Jeff Bercume looked like he was about to give the Chiefs the lead when he hit a hard one hopper to the right of first baseman Josh Klimkiewicz. The former Harvard star made a nice diving stop and recovered quickly enough to flip to Giarratani covering first to get the fleet Bercume by half a step.

Another Chiefs scoring opportunity went by the boards in the fourth when Landers drew a two out walk, stole second, but couldn’t get any further as Giarratani again got tough and caught Barbati looking at a third strike.

The Chiefs got a defensive gem of their own in the top of the fifth when Brian Macrina made a spectacular diving grab of Steve Buikus line drive with Paul Bonfiglio, who had walked and went to second on a sacrifice bunt, in scoring position.

The Chiefs were poised to take the lead again in the fifth when Pyburn broke up the no-hitter with a two out single and proceeded to steal second. A Macrina fly ball to center ended the inning and the teams went into the sixth at 0-0.

Addesa’s shot in the top of the sixth came with two outs. The inning started well enough for Lozeau when he struck out Navarro swinging. Martinho followed with a single and Lozeau got the dangerous Klimkiewicz to fly to Landers in right. Adessa caught up with a Lozeau fastball and provided instant offense for the Bombers and a 2-0 lead.

Bercume’s chalk raising double down the right field line was all the Chiefs could muster against Giarratani in the sixth and Chris Foundas came on for Lozeau, his former Bryant University teammate, to work the top of seventh.

A throwing error by Copa at third, a hit batsman, two walks, a wild pitch and a Klimkiewicz single, added up to three unearned runs off Foundas and 5-0 Bombers lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

Giarratani made quick work of the Chiefs in the seventh. He got Matt Boleski, who was pinch hitting for Barbati, to groundout, Andre to fly to center and ended things when he got pinch hitter Phil Costello looking.

Giarratani struck out seven and surrendered three walks on the way to picking up his first win of the year. Lozeau, who suffered his first loss, pitched very well for the Chiefs giving up just three hits and recording a couple of strikeouts.

The Chiefs begin a three game pre-Fourth of July stretch on Sunday at Walsh Field in Wakefield at 3:00 PM. Lefty Dylan Ellis (1-0) is expected to start for the Chiefs.

NE10 Player of the Year
Mike Baillargeon

Medford, MA- The Chiefs have announced the addition of former Assumption College infielder and 2009 Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Year Mike Baillargeon.

Baillargeon is expected to add some much needed offensive power to the lineup. The Chiefs are hitting only .236 as a team through the first six games of the season. They were shutout on just two hits on Friday night while dropping their first game of the summer.

A native of Worcester, Baillargeon just capped off a great four year career with the Greyhounds being named to the Rawlings/American Baseball Coaches Association NCAA Division II All American second team.

The three year team captain was named to the National College Baseball Writers of America all-America team. He was also named a first-team performer by the Northeast-10 Conference, ECAC Division II, NCBWA East Regional and ABCA East Regional coaches and the sports information directors on the Daktronics all-East team, Daktronics all-East Regional, National College Baseball Writers Association East Region and the ABCA East Region team.

Baillargeon batted a lofty .393 this past season with a team-record 84 hits and also led Assumption in runs (56), singles (57), home runs (11), stolen bases (12), bases on balls (27) and total bases (136).

He set career marks in games (187), games started (187), at bats (731), hits (267), triples (15, tied), sacrifice flies (11) and was only caught stealing ten times in fifty three attempts during his college career.

Baillargeon is expected to join the Chiefs on Sunday when they travel to Walsh Field in Wakefield to begin a three game road trip in a rare 3:00 PM start. - Bruce Tillman

DiCato's Complete Game Five-Hitter Give Chiefs 4-2 Win Over Wakefield

DiCato
Mike DiCato

Medford, MA- After eight days the rain finally stopped.

Chiefs righty Mike DiCato never did.

The former UMass-Amherst and Malden Catholic star was nearly flawless once again, picking up his second straight win, as the Chiefs turned back the Wakefield Merchants 4-2 at Huskins Field on Thursday evening.

DiCato tossed zeros at the Merchants until the seventh when the visitors finally broke through for a couple of runs after the Chiefs had already opened up a 4-0 lead.

Wakefield threatened to grab an early lead in the first inning.  Rollins College's Josh Band led off with a single to center and the Merchants appeared to be in business when former Red Sox farmhand Steve Langone singled sharply past Peter Copa at third. Northeastern's Jason Roth was next and drove a ball that was earmarked for the right-centerfield gap. Wheaton rookie Hal Landers had other ideas as he got on his horse and made a nice back to plate grab with Band tagging and going to third on the play. DiCato then came up huge striking out UMass Lowell star Taylor Von Kriegenberg looking and ICL all-star catcher Mike Sorrentino swinging.

Trinity lefty James Ramsey got two outs in the bottom of the first inning before running into a bit of trouble when Jeff Bercume and Justin Crisafulli both reached on miscues. Ramsey escaped when he got Brian Macrina to ground to Alex LiDonni at third base ending the threat.

DiCato and Ramsey matched zeros in the second before the Chiefs broke through to take a 1-0 lead in the third. Shortstop Brendan Pyburn led off with a solid single to center. Ramsey got Bob McCarthy to fly to left and Bercume followed with the first of his three consecutive singles, this one a line shot to center. Sorrentino's errant attempt to pick Bercume off first base went into short right allowing Pyburn to scamper to third. Crisafulli's RBI fielder's choice then scored Pyburn for the game's first run. Ramsey caught Macrina looking to end the inning keeping it a one run game.

DiCato went into cruise control retiring the Merchants side in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings before the Chiefs gave him a little breathing room with three fifth inning runs. Pyburn drew a walk to get things started and a McCarthy sharp single to center moved him to second. Bercume then dropped a perfect bunt single to load them up for Crisafulli. The Chiefs all time RBI leader added two more to his career total of 370 when he drilled an opposite field single to right scoring both Pyburn and McCarthy that jumped the lead to 3-0. Dario Pizzano came on to run for Crisafulli and righty Kevin Flight relieved Ramsey for the Merchants. Flight threw Macrina's grounder wide of first allowing Bercume to score the Chiefs fourth run. J.P. Pollard flew to left for the inning's first out and Copa drew a walk to load the bases. Flight escaped more trouble when he got Landers swinging and pinch hitter Mike Andre, who was making his first appearance of the season on the road back from knee surgery, to ground to Langone at second.

The Merchants spoiled DiCato's shutout bid in the seventh. Von Kriegenberg led off and beat out an infield single up the middle. Sorrentino then gave the Merchants their biggest bang of the night when he drilled a double past the diving Bercume in center sending Von Kriengenberg to third. Kevin Johnson got the Merchants on the board with a RBI grounder to Pollard at first scoring Von Kriengenberg. LiDonni then grounded to Andre at third base for the second out with Sorrentino scoring on play. DiCato ended the proceedings in style when he struck out pinch hitter John D'Angelo swinging.

DiCato allowed five hits, struck out five and issued one walk. With the complete game 84 pitch outing, the Winthrop, MA native raised his record to 2-0 on the season. Ramsey suffered the loss for Wakefield and fell to 0-2.

The Chiefs are right back in action on Friday at 6:00 PM when they host the Testa Corp. Bombers at Tufts University with Dan Lozeau drawing the starting nod. The Bombers got a complete game three hitter from Mike Hashem and defeated the Medford Americans 3-1 under the lights East Boston Stadium on Thursday night.

Seventh Inning Comeback Give Chiefs 2-2 Tie vs. Wakefield

lozeauchiefs
Dan Lozeau Allowed Just 4 Hits

Medford, MA- If you blinked you probably missed it.

In one of the most rapidly played ICL games in history, the Chiefs battled back from a 2-0 deficit with two seventh inning runs, courtesy of a Jeff Bercume two out, two RBI single, to tie up the Wakefield Merchants 2-2 at Tufts University.

The game took a brief one hour and twelve minutes to complete.

The two main components that contributed to the swiftness of the game were former Chicago Cubs farmhand Steve Coffey and Bryant University’s career twenty game winner Dan Lozeau. Coffey and Lozeau threw nothing but strikes with both surrendering just four hits. Coffey did not issue a walk or record a strikeout while Lozeau allowed one free pass and struck out four Merchants.

Coffey took a one-hitter into the bottom of the seventh before the Chiefs bats came alive just in time to pick up a point in the standings. The ICL veteran had only allowed two base runners in the first 6.1 innings, J.P. Pollard who reached on Wakefield’s only miscue of the night in the first and was subsequently thrown out trying to steal second and Bob McCarthy's bloop single to left in the third.

Wakefield struck first in the top half of the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Taylor Von Kriengenberg led off with a single and catcher Mike Sorrentino followed with a hard grounder to third baseman Peter Copa. Copa made a nice play going to his right to glove the ball but his throw to first was high allowing Von Kriengenberg to take third with Sorrentino ending up at second. With both runners in scoring position, Lozeau recorded a big first out when he got veteran Dana D’Agostino swinging. Dan Mello was next up and he hit a ground ball that deflected off Lozeau’s glove to second baseman Mike Barbati. Barbati’s only play was to first base, throwing out Mello by a step with Von Kriengenberg scoring.

The Merchants lead went to 2-0 in the fourth inning. With two outs, Sorrentino drew Lozeau’s only walk of the night and scored from first on D’Agostino’s gap shot double to the fence in left center.

Coffey meanwhile was cruising right along facing only one batter over the minimum until there was one out in the seventh. In the Chiefs last at bat, Coffey got out number one when McCarthy bounced to Mello at second. Pollard then kept the Chiefs hopes alive when he drilled a clean single up the middle. Cleanup man Justin Crisafulli followed with a long single off the base of the wall in right that sent Pollard to third. Eddie McDonald then came on to pinch run for Crisafulli. Coffey then hit Copa with a 1-2 pitch loading the bases for Bercume. The sweet swinging all East selection from Merrimack College then delivered both Pollard and McDonald with a single to right center knotting the game at two. The Chiefs had a chance to win it with Copa in scoring position but Coffey preserved the tie when he got Barbati to ground to Alex LiDonni at third to end the game.

With the deadlock, the Chiefs stay unbeaten in ICL play (3-0-1, 4-0-1 overall) and the Merchants go to 2-3-1. Next up for the Chiefs is a date with the Medford Americans on Thursday at 6:00 PM at Tufts University

Chiefs Notebook.......June 15

Dario Pizzano
Rookie Dario Pizzano

The Chiefs non-league win over the Central New England Baseball Association’s Westford Willows on Sunday was the first time the two teams had ever hooked up. The Chiefs also play an annual game against the CNEBA’s Lunenburg Phillies. This year's game will be held at Lunenburg’s Marshall Park on Sunday (June 21) at 11:00 AM…..The Chiefs first played Lunenberg back in 1994 with Richie Barker on the mound for the Chiefs. With many radar guns popping behind the plate, Barker pitched the Chiefs to a 6-1 win. Following the game Barker signed with Chicago Cubs. Barker’s career spanned seven professional seasons and he made his major league debut for the Cubs at Wrigley Field on April 25, 1999, at the age of 26. The former Malden High and Quinsigamond Community College star appeared in 275 games during his time in pro ball posting an overall record of 20-19 with an ERA of 4.25 in 398 professional innings…..Sunday’s win against Westford was the Chiefs 42nd win against non-league opponents against just 19 losses dating back to 1989….Rookie outfielder Dario Pizzano will miss Tuesday’s game against Wakefield as he has been chosen to appear in the Eastern Massachusetts High School all-star game at Fraser Field in Lynn. The recent Malden Catholic graduate led the state in hitting this past spring for Steve Freker’s Lancers. Pizzano, who had three hits in the Westford game, will be playing for Columbia University next spring. He gained national notoriety in 2003 when he led the Saugus Americans in a dramatic run during the Little League World Series in Williamsport, PA……The first Intercity League fundraiser, raffle and social will be held on Friday, June 19 at the Woburn Sons of Italy starting at 7:00 PM. ICL Umpire in Chief Joe Cacciatore will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the event which is expected to draw a throng of over 500 people. Those needing information should e-mail the Intercity League at IntercityLeague@aol.com. … Former Chiefs catcher Matt Cooney, who signed with the Red Sox in 2007, has returned to Eastern Connecticut State to complete his degree this summer. Cooney spent the last season and a half in the Sox organization playing for Gulf Coast, Greensboro and the Lowell Spinners. The Arlington product is expected to return to the Chiefs in 2010….UMass-Amherst star Jared Freni, who pitched for the Chiefs in 2006, has been very impressive in first two starts for the North Shore Navigators of the NECBL this season. Freni, another former Malden Catholic star, is 2-0 with an ERA of 0.69. He has struck out 20 batters in just 13 innings of work. If he is not chosen in the 2010 MLB draft next spring he is expected to return to the Chiefs pitching staff. He won his only two Chiefs starts as a rookie in 2006 posting a 3.71 ERA in 11.1 innings of work….Another former Chiefs pitcher Jeff DeCarlo just completed his junior season at the University of Michigan. The former St. John’s Prep standout was also with the Chiefs in 2006 before spending the last two seasons in the Great Lakes Collegiate League and the NECBL. This summer DeCarlo is pitching for the Front Royal Cardinals of the Valley Baseball League in Virginia. One of DeCarlo’s teammates on the Cardinals is former Cassell Club and present Bentley star James Roche of Arlington. DeCarlo has made two appearances so far for Front Royal with an ERA of 0.00 in five innings of work. DeCarlo is also expected to return to the Chiefs next summer when his collegiate league eligibility expires….Catcher Matt Lawlor, who hit .398 for the Chiefs last season, remains on the disabled list with a herniated disc in his back. The Dracut, MA, native and 2008 ICL all-star selection also had his college season at UMass-Lowell cut short by the injury….. There is some better news on the injury front as Mike Andre grabbed a couple of at bats in Sunday’s non-league game. Andre underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in early May after completing his senior year at Merrimack College. The two-time ICL all-star is expected back into the lineup soon…. Staff ace Keith Forbes continues to throw and is also expected back in the next couple of weeks….Chiefs catcher Nick Leva of Cambridge, MA has committed to attend the University of Southern New Hampshire in the fall….. Make up dates for the Chiefs three home rainouts will be finalized later this week..... Condolences go out to former ICL umpire Jake Falvey on the passing of his father Jeremiah A. Falvey, Jr. on June 11. Jake also served as the Everett High School Baseball Coach until he moved to Oklahoma with his wife Jill a few years ago …..Bruce Tillman

Chiefs Hammer Westford 19-2 in Non-League Contest

Justin Crisafulli
Justin Crisafulli had 5 RBI's

Malden, MA- The Chiefs broke open a 3-1 game with a dozen fifth inning runs to wallop the two time defending Central New England Baseball Association champions Westford Willows 19-2 at O’Donnell Field on the campus of Malden Catholic on Sunday afternoon.

Heavy overnight and early morning rains forced the game to be moved from Playstead Park to the artificial surface of O’Donnell Field late Saturday night.

Merrimack College right-hander Ryan McNeill of Lynnfield, MA, went the first five innings to pick up the victory. UMass-Amherst teammates and former Malden Catholic stars Rob Machado and Mike DiCato each worked two innings to preserve the win.

After McNeill retired the side in the top of the first the Chiefs grabbed a quick 3-0 lead. Brendan Pyburn led off with a single to center and rookie Dario Pizzano doubled into the left field corner. All-East selection Jeff Bercume then roped a single to right scoring both Pyburn and Pizzano to make it 2-0. Veteran Justin Crisafulli followed with a RBI single to left making it 3-0 Chiefs.

The Willows scored an unearned run in the top of the second when Assumption College star Derek Migrants led off with a long double to left center. Migrants stole third and scored when the throw from his Assumption teammate Eddie McDonald skipped into left field.

After giving up the three runs and four hits in the first, Westford starter George Migrants from Fitchburg State settled down and retired the next twelve Chiefs in a row. McNeill was just as effective preserving the 3-1 Chiefs lead heading into the bottom of the fifth when the Chiefs exploded for twelve runs off three Westford pitchers to take a 15-1 lead. A Crisafulli bases clearing triple, Pizzano’s second double of the day and a Nick Leva single were the key hits in the big inning.

Machado came on to make his first appearance in relief of McNeill to throw a scoreless sixth and seventh innings allowing just a single to Merrimack's Ray Walker while striking out two.

DiCato worked a scoreless eighth before the Chiefs put up four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Singles from Pyburn, Pizzano, Crisafulli and pinch hitter Bill Cataldo, sandwiched around a Bercume two RBI double, ran the Chiefs margin to 19-1.

The Willows picked up an unearned run in the top of the ninth off DiCato on a double from SNHU’s Chris O’Neil, an infield error and a RBI single from Brandeis’ Terry Deshler.

McNeil, an all NE-10 selection this past spring, gave up just three hits and struck out three in his first start in a Chiefs uniform. Machado was very sharp allowing just one hit and DiCato gave up two hits as both struck out a couple of batters each. Crisafulli led the Chiefs hit parade with three hits and five RBI and Pizzano had three hits and two RBI. Pyburn and Bercume, who had four RBI’s, chipped in with two hits each.

Medford, MA- The Chiefs will now take on the two time Central New England Baseball Association Champion Westford Willows in a non-league contest on Sunday at 12:30 PM at O'Donnell Field on the Malden Catholic Campus in Malden, MA. The game was originally scheduled to be played at Playstaed Park.  With the forecast of overnight and early moring rain showers it was decided, with the help of Malden Catholic Head Coach Steve Freker, to move the game to the field turf of Malden Catholic late Saturday night.

O'Donnell Field is located at the rear of the Malden Catholic Campus at 99 Crystal Street, Malden, MA 02148.

Wet Grounds Postpone Chiefs-Bombers on Friday Night

pcrisa
Asst. Manager Paul Crisafulli

Medford, MA- Heavy overnight rains coupled with additional passing showers today has rendered Huskins Field unplayable for tonight's Chiefs-Bombers game that was scheduled at 6:00 PM.

"We were at the field early this morning and although it was very wet, we thought we had a slight chance to play if the rain had stopped," said Chiefs Assistant Manager Paul Crisafulli. "We returned shortly after noontime to inspect the field and it starting raining again. That's when we consulted with the grounds crew and decided it would be best to postpone tonight's game", Crisafulli added.

The postponement is the second in two days for the Chiefs. Thursday's game against the Blue Sox was scrapped after both teams had arrived at the field and rain began to fall.

No make-up dates have as yet been announced.

The Chiefs-Bombers game was the only Intercity League game that was scheduled on Friday. Last night the Americans and the Bombers managed to duck the raindrops on the artificial surface of East Boston Stadium with Medford coming away with a 10-0 win.

The Chiefs are back in action on Sunday when they take on the Westford Willows, defending champions of the CNEBL, at Playstead Park in Medford in a non-league affair starting at 12:00 Noon.

The Chiefs resume ICL play on Tuesday when they host the Wakefield Merchants at Huskins Field at 6:00 PM.

Both teams had arrived at the field when the game was postponed.

No make up date has been announced.

The Chiefs will try again on Friday when they host the Testa Corp.Bombers at 6:00 PM.

Lozeau Retires Last 17 in a Row, Bercume Goes 3 for 4 as Chiefs Blank Americans 6-0

Bercyright
Jeff Bercume was 3 for 4 with 2 RBI

Medford, MA- Former Bryant University star Dan Lozeau tossed a complete game three hitter, retiring the last seventeen batters in a row, and Merrimack’s all everything Jeff Bercume rapped out three hits as the Chiefs blanked the Medford Americans 6-0 at Playstead Park on Wednesday night. The win allowed the Chiefs to remain perfect at 3-0 on the young season.

It was Lozeau’s first start for the Chiefs since 2007. The Pelham, NH, native spent last summer in the NECBL. He just completed his career at Bryant by picking up his 20th NCAA win.

The Chiefs staked Lozeau to a lead in the top of the first against his Bryant teammate Brian O’Neil. Brendan Pyburn reached on an error and went to second on Bob McCarthy’s single to right.  Bercume quickly made it 1-0 Chiefs when he sliced a double to left scoring Pyburn. O’Neil walked Crisafulli to load the bases but escaped further damage when he struck out Hal Landers, got Peter Copa on a groundout to third forcing McCarthy at the plate and getting J.P. Pollard swinging.

The Americans had their best scoring chance in the bottom of the first. One out singles by Luke Begley and Mike Delponte along with a fielder’s choice put two Medford base runners in scoring position before Lozeau ended the frame when he got Jay Olson to ground out to Pyburn at short.

The Chiefs doubled their lead to 2-0 in the second on walks to Matt Boleski and Mike Barbati and an infield error.

Lozeau allowed a one out single to Mike Ferreiro in the second which proved to be the last base runner for the Americans for the evening.

The Chiefs lead went to 5-0 in the third when Pollard drew a bases loaded walk and Barbati delivered a two out, two RBI single to center. The Chiefs final run came in the sixth off reliever Kevin Hayes when a RBI infield single from Bercume scored former Malden Catholic star and Columbia bound Dario Pizano who had walked.

Lozeau, struck out four and did not issue a walk in an 82 pitch effort.

The Chiefs are back in action on Thursday night at 6:00 PM at Tufts University when they host the Lexington Blue Sox. Lefty Dylan Ellis (1-0) is expected to get the starting nod. On Friday the Chiefs entertain the Testa Corp. Bombers with Mike DiCato (1-0) drawing the assignment. On Sunday the Chiefs hook up with The Westford Willows of the Central New England League in a non-league contest at Playstead Park at 11:00 AM.

Mike DiCato Picked Up Win

Medford, MA- Rookie Hal Landers had five RBI’s, including a third inning grand slam, and Mike DiCato was nearly flawless for five innings as the Chiefs turned back Mooney Dental of Woburn 12-7 in their home opener at Tufts University’s Huskins Field on Thursday evening.

DiCato held the Tanners hitless through the first four innings before Sam Perkins led off the top of the fifth with a single.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Landers drove a two out RBI single to right scoring Brian Macrina who had walked.

The lead went to 2-0 in the second when Matt Boleski drilled a solo home run over the 379 foot sign in rightcenter.

In the third inning, walks to Macrina and Jonathan Pollard and a Peter Copa infield single set the stage for Landers’ grand slam that gave the Chiefs a 6-0 lead. Eddie McDonald’s RBI groundout made it 7-0.

After a scoreless fourth, the Tanners picked up an unearned run on two hits in the top of the fifth before the Chiefs answered with two in the bottom of the inning on RBI singles from Brendan Pyburn and Macrina to run the score to 9-2.

Mooney made it a tad interesting when DiCato tired in the sixth. The UMass righty issued three walks and a single and exited with a 9-2 lead but was responsible for the bases being loaded. Lefty Chris Labriola came on and was introduced to the ICL when Rob Wronski unloaded with a bases clearing double off the wall in left that quickly made it a 9-5 affair. Labriola recorded a strikeout before a Matt Ruane single and an Max McKenna sacrifice fly cut the Chiefs lead to 9-6.

The Chiefs gave themselves some breathing room in the bottom of the inning when singles from Phil Costello, Pyburn and Macrina upped the lead to 12-6.

Connor Bishop and Chris Foundas worked the seventh for the Chiefs when the Tanners picked up their final run.

DiCato (1-0)  worked five innings plus, allowing five runs (four earned), walked three, struck out three and allowed just three hits.

For Openers, Chiefs Beat Merchants 5-1

Peter Copa
Peter Copa 3 for 4 in Debut

Lexington, MA- Dylan Ellis spun a neat complete game three-hitter and Peter Copa went three for four in his debut as the Chiefs turned back the Wakefield Merchants 5-1 in the season opener on Saturday evening. The game was the nightcap of an ICL season opening tripleheader which was played as part of the Eleventh Annual Jerie DeAngelis Day of Baseball at Lexington High School.

Elllis, from Gloucester, MA and Merrimack College, was sharp all game long and set the tone for the day when he got out of a bases loaded nobody out jam cheaply in the second inning when the Merchants picked up their lone run.

Wakefield starter Kevin Tidmarsh and Ellis both set the sides down in order in the first inning. The Chiefs took advantage of some shoddy Merchant defense to take a 1-0 lead in the second. Paul Koslowski reached on an infield error and Copa delivered a single to left. Hal Landers then lined to second base and the throw to double Copa off first went into the stands allowing Koslowski to score from second base.

The Merchants tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the second inning and threatened for much more. UMass Lowell’s Taylor Von Kriegenbergh led off with a single and Mike Sorrentino drew a full count walk. Kevin Johnson then dropped a perfect bunt single that loaded the bases with no outs. Former Red Sox draftee Steve Langone then grounded out to shortstop Brendan Pyburn, whose only play was to first, with Von Kriegenbergh scoring and leaving runners at second and third. Ellis averted further damage striking out Sam Choate and getting Matt Russo to ground to Mike Barbati at second base.

The Chiefs responded with two runs in the top half of the third when Barbati reached on an infield error and Pyburn singled to left. Catcher Bob McCarthy popped up his sacrifice bunt attempt for the inning’s first out but former Merrimack teammate Jeff Bercume got him off the hook when he drove a double to right scoring Barbati. DH Justin Crisafulli then plated Pyburn with a RBI ground out to Johnson at shortstop making it 3-1.

The lead went to 4-1 in the fifth when Copa singled off the third base bag and Hal Landers dropped a perfect bunt single. Phil Costello moved them both up a base with a sacrifice and Barbati reached on an infield single, with no advance by the runners, which loaded the bases. Pyburn then singled to right scoring Copa.

It stayed 4-1 until the seventh when the Chiefs picked up another run off former Chicago Cub farmhand Steve Coffey. Crisafulli reached on a fielder’s choice and Jonathan Pollard pinch ran. Koslowski then singled to center and Copa hit a long ground rule double to left that scored Pollard.

Ellis, who has lost just three times in his last fourteen decisions in Chiefs uniform, struck out four and issued two walks. Along with Von Kriegenbergh’s single and Johnson’s bunt in the second inning, the only other hit the southpaw surrendered was a third inning leadoff hit to Rollins College third baseman Josh Band.

Chiefs Notebook…..In other games played as part of the Jerie DeAngelis Day, the Lexington Blue Sox shut out the Mooney Dental Tanners 4-0 and the Medford Americans rallied back to tie up the Testa Corp. Bombers 6-6…..Ellis recorded fourteen ground ball outs with Koslowski finishing the day with a like number of putouts at first base....... It was Ellis' 20th appearance in a Chiefs uniform….The Chiefs start the 2009 season with two all-stars from last season on the disabled list. Catcher Matt Lawlor of UMass Lowell is out indefinitely with a herniated disc in his back and third basemen Mike Andre, who underwent arthroscopic knee surgery on May 5 following his spring season with Merrimack College, is week to week….Veteran outfielder Brian Macrina is expected to make a return after nearly two years on the DL later this week.....Former San Diego Padre and Chiefs staff ace Keith Forbes is expected to see some mound time in the next ten days…..Justin Crisafulli’s RBI in the third inning was the 362nd of his illustrious Chiefs career…. Hal Landers is indeed the son of Chiefs legend Hank Landers who was a member of Chiefs championship teams in 1990, 1992, 1995 and 1997. Hank played in the Milwaukee Brewers fram system and is among the leaders in all Chiefs career batting categories including fourth in home runs with 40. Hal had a great year for 30-12 Wheaton College hitting a lofty .340 with two homers and 37 RBI's. He also stole 17 bases.....The Chiefs return to ICL action on Thursday when they host the Mooney Dental Tanners of Woburn at Tufts University's Huskins Field at 6:00 PM...

Many Former Chiefs Involved with Legends of North Medford Little Legaue Gala on May 29 Honoring the Late Angelo Veneziano

Angelo Veneziano
The Late Angelo Veneziano

(Special to andrechiefs.com from Medford Transcript and edited for this site)

Medford, MA -  What do I do when the ball comes to me?

If you played in the North Medford Little League for the late Angelo Veneziano, you know exactly what the phrase means. “He was always putting you in situations, like if a fly ball comes to me in centerfield, what do I do?” said Hank Morse, a former Chiefs pitcher who played for Veneziano. “He was the master of the fundamentals and somehow, he got 12-year-olds to learn.”

Years later, the Medford radio personality can still hear those pep talks Veneziano gave his players. “He would say a little prayer,” Morse recalled. “Then he would say, ‘Let’s go out there and have some fun.’ It was all about the fun of the game.”

And Morse fondly remembers the summer of 1978, when the “Comeback Kids” went to the state semi-finals. He said the team that was always behind but somehow always won is one of his favorite memories. “I gave up 12 runs in the first inning,” Morse said of that championship game. “My favorite memory is of giving up a 300-foot home run and him laughing his rear end off in the dug out.”

On May 29, Morse will emcee the North Medford Little League’s Legends of the League gala, a night to honor the people who have dedicated their time and effort to the league. Veneziano will be the organization’s first honoree at what the league hopes will be an annual event.

John Veneziano, another former Chiefs player, who played in the league as a kid and later coached, said the idea for the event came after his father’s death in 2003 when the family requested donations be made to the league in lieu of flowers. John remains the Chiefs number one financial supporter through his ERA Andrew Realty in Medford Square.

With several thousand dollars in hand, John Veneziano said the league decided to put the money towards purchasing new lights for Gillis Park. After a few inquiries with Patriot Bank in Lexington, the $6,000 collected was used as a down payment toward a low-interest loan for the lights. John Veneziano said after the lights were installed in 2005, a small plaque was to go in at the park in his father’s honor. But the league had another idea.

“The league thought we could do this as an annual event,” he said. “It’s really about people who give their time back to the league. A lot of people want to come back because they want to coach their kids. And these kids are really excited and easier to manage than some of the older kids. It’s all about baseball to them.” At the same time the league decided on an annual fundraiser, it will also honor the elder Veneziano as its first “legend.” Former commissioner, coach and lifelong league member Joe Grande is all for it.

“He died too early in life,” Grande said of the friend he grew up with in the North End. “People like him should live forever, not in your hearts or minds, but here forever to talk to. When John called me up with this idea, I thought ‘Who else?’ I’ve never seen anyone like kids the way Angie did.” And Grande would know. He was the one who pulled his friend into the league. “He was driving by Gillis Park with John and saw me,” Grande recalled. “He got out and asked me about it. I told him if John wanted to play, he had to try out.” When he made it, Grande said, John played for his team, not his father’s. The three other boys, however, all played for dad.

“My father had everyone’s stats and percentages for every team,” Chuck Veneziano said. “He had it all worked out before every game.” Grande agreed. “Me, I flew by the seat of my pants,” he said, with a laugh. “I didn’t know what we were going to do much past the first inning. But Angie…well, he was precise at all times. He knew what you were going to do before you did it. He always took into consideration what the coach in the other dugout was going to do.” And he never forgot what the game was about.

“He loved the kids,” Grande said. “He was someone who was just very involved in the league.”

The North Medford Little League will hold Legends of the League, honoring the late Angelo B. Veneziano, on Friday, May 29 at the Montvale Plaza, 54 Montvale Ave., Stoneham, with a social hour beginning at 7 p.m., plus a dinner, raffles, a presentation, and entertainment.  Tickets are on sale now and are bound to go fast. Tickets are $35 and may be purchased at ERA Andrew Realty’s main office at 12 High St. in Medford Square.
Current Chiefs Chuck Andre (Mgr), Mike Andre (3B) and Matt Boleski (OF) along with former Chiefs John Veneziano, Rick Veneziano, Hank Morse, Mark Blake, Coach Steve Calabresi, Eddie Carnes, Dave Clivio, Jeff DeCarlo, Steve Gambale, Frank Giliberti, Jimmy Martorana, Steve Matteo, Dave Polcari & Pancho Webb are all alumni of the North Medford Little League.

About the Chiefs: A Capsule Look

The Chiefs and outstanding baseball tradition have been synonymous in Medford, Massachusetts since 1957. Carrying the Hosmer Chiefs name from 1958 to the 1984 and the Andre Chiefs banner from 1989 to the present, the Chiefs have exemplified a consistent winning baseball atmosphere. Last season marked the 51st anniversary of the founding of the Chiefs.
The Championships
Through the years the Chiefs have brought 17 baseball championships to the City of Medford, Massachusetts. They have won 21 Suburban Twilight League or Intercity League pennants. Remarkably, the Chiefs have recorded a winning record and have made the playoffs in 43 of their 45 summers of playing baseball.
The Franchise
The Chiefs franchise carries a winning percentage of almost .700 over the 2,100 games they have played over six decades. In 1966, the Chiefs were named as the top semi-professional team in America. Since 1957 they have had only five managers, Ernie Ardolino (1957-1960), Lenny Dempsey (1961-1967), Joe O’Donnell (1968-1981), Bob DeFelice (1982-1984) and current manager Chuck Andre 1989-present.
The 2009 Coaching Staff
Manager Chuck Andre (Boston College) completed his 18th year as manager in 2008. He recorded his 400th career win in 2007 and played for the Chiefs from 1974-1980. Andre, who now has a career managerial record of 420-240-59, has piloted the tribe to 16 playoff appearances, seven regular season pennants and four Intercity League Championships. A former right handed pitcher, he has missed the ICL postseason just twice as a player or manager in 25 seasons. He was inducted into the Medford High School Hall of Fame in 1995.
In 2009, Andre will be assisted by Paul Crisafulli (NEBI, 11th Season), Dave Marsters (Suffolk, 1st Season as Pitching Coach) and Anthony Durkee (Salem State, 4th Season).
The Tradition
The Chiefs baseball tradition runs deep, as sons have followed their fathers and grandfathers in wearing the uniform. Over the years playing for the Chiefs became a sandlot baseball fantasy place where batboys became managers and players, ball boys became major league pitchers and many became baseball legends. As former manager O’Donnell (1968-1981) said at a Chiefs reunion banquet, “once a Chief, always a Chief.” Still today, Chiefs players from decades gone by return to watch their team play. There always seems to be an old Chiefs player or two in the crowd.
Alumni
Through the years, Chiefs mystique, championships and professionalism always remained constant. Almost 600 semi-professional ballplayers at one time or another wore the Chiefs uniform. It is estimated that over 110 of those players at some point signed a professional baseball contract. Two former Chiefs have even appeared in the World Series, Mike Pagliarulo with the Minnesota Twins in 1991 and Kevin McGlinchy with the Atlanta Braves in 1999.
Huskins Field at Tufts University Located in Medford, Massachusetts
The Chiefs play their home games at beautiful Huskins Field which is located on College Avenue on the campus of Tufts University, considered to be one of the finest natural grass surfaces in the Northeast.
Record Book
In the record book department, the Chiefs have bragging rights to the two all time winning pitchers in ICL history, Fred Knox (1957-1973) and now Pitching Coach Dave Marsters (1989-2008) both who have recorded over 110 career victories. Former Cleveland Indian outfielder Justin Crisafulli, who is the Chiefs career home run leader with 86 and RBI leader with 361, will return for his 14th season.

"If History Can Only Repeat Itself"
(Special to www.andrechiefs.com) August 18, 2008
Wakefield, MA- Right up until the moment Nate Leva's screaming line drive was snagged by Lexington shortstop Anthony Santos to end their semi-final series against the powerful and veteran laden Blue Sox late Sunday afternoon, they just would not quit.

Such was the saga of the 2008 Chiefs as the upstart club emptied the tank each night from late May to mid August. It will be remembered as the year the franchise regained some ICL prominence after two seasons of being a virtual expansion team and sporting the only two sub .500 records in team history. The team rediscovered its winning ways and battled into the ICL playoffs for the 44th time in 46 seasons. The Chiefs completed the regular ICL season with a 17-8-6 record to go along with a 3-1 non-league mark, and pretty much had a battle on thier hands every night, win, lose or tie.

They fought through injuries and matched the ICL's best, pitch for pitch and hit for hit, as the young club matured with each passing day. In fact, the Chiefs went 11-2-1 over their last fourteen regular season games and finally clinched a playoff spot on August 9th. To go along with the six hard fought ties, the team was involved in ten one run games and five two run games. Those numbers mean that 21 of their 37 games were decided by two runs or less, including six last inning wins. 'These kids don't know how to quit" said Chiefs veteran manager Chuck Andre, following another come from behind win in late July.

Sure, the Chiefs would like to be playing for a few more days as the ICL finals begin in Lexington this week. But nobody really thought that they would be playing last week either, at least not before another season or two of ripening on the vine.

Aside from 32 year old veteran and ICL legend Justin Crisafulli, who has a boatload of championships and playoff experience with the Chiefs, and 27 year old Paul Koslowski, the Chiefs day to day lineup got their first taste of what it meant to be in contention.

Second baseman Brendan Pyburn, an ICL rookie, and shortstop Leva are both just 20. Third baseman Mike Andre, who is one of the Chiefs veterans in his third ICL campaign and was Rookie of the Year in 2006, is 21. Converted infiielder Mike Barbati, who rode the pine during the first half of the season until breaking into the lineup and can play any position, is just 19.  Outfielders Phil Costello and Matt Boleski are also just 21 years old. You can then add star lefty Dylan Ellis, who was sensational all year at age 20, and rookie reserves Alex Fisher and Nicky Leva, who are just 18 to the list. Closer Chris Foundas and relievers Joe Martini and Jose Pimental are also all just 21.

Maybe the best story of all was 20 year old rookie catcher Matt Lawlor who burst into camp a week before the season started and won the catching job. Not only did he win the job, he established himself as a legitimate Rookie of the Year candidate hitting a lofty .398 and was named to the ICL mid season all-star team.

Another great storyline would be the tale of centerfielder Andrew Hanson. The Princeton graduate just completed law school and found time between Chiefs games to study for the bar exam which he took in July. He ended his first ICL year hitting .293.

Others like Connor Bishop and Nicky Dunn were very valuable assets to the 2008 team. Bishop, in his third season is also 20 years old. The Arlington lefty saw only limited action on the mound, but came up huge in a winning relief effort against Cassell in July. Dunn, another rookie from Salem State, is a gifted athlete and did anything needed to help the team, from pinch running, to catching, to playing second base, as well as all three outfield spots.

Leva, became a legitimate ICL shortstop as the season progressed. Known for his hard nosed play and the product of the highly respected Cambridge baseball programs, he will complete his four year term as starting shortstop next spring for the D-2 Bridgeport University Purple Knights.

Veteran ace and former pro Keith Forbes anchored a solid pitching staff that will only improve next season with the expected return of a few arms that were with the club in 2006 and 2007. Two of those additions are expected to be righty's Danny Lozeau of Bryant and Mike DiCato of UMass-Amherst. Lefty Jeff DeCarlo of Michigan and Jared Freni of UMass could also be on the horizon. Lozeau, DiCato, DeCarlo and Freni all saw action with the young Chiefs in 2006 or 2007.

Injuries played a key part in the 2008 season. ICL all-star outfielder Brian Macrina was lost for the year in early May with nagging leg injuries. His status for 2009 is still uncertain. Franklin Pierce star Matt Anderson was able to play in only 14 games and his season ended in mid July when a knee injury put him on the shelf. He is expected to be healthy and bring a big bat to the 2009 lineup. Koslowski and Andre battled leg injuries during the season with both of them playing through it as best as possible. In fact, Andre started all 37 games for the Chiefs before finally being forced out of the lineup in the fourth inning of Sunday's game. Koslowski did his best Kurt Gibson impression on August 5 when he hobbled around the bases after hitting a huge pinch hit home run that broke a 4-4 tie and propelled the Chiefs to an important win over the Americans.

And who could forget Assistant Manager Paul Crisafulli exiting his familar third base coaching box to make two pinch hit appearances, both resulting in basehits. Or Dave Marsters, the Chiefs record holder in every pitching category, dusting off the cobwebs to make a couple of late season quality starts.

But without question, the single biggest reason for the 2008 turnaround was the re-emergence of veteran slugger Justin Crisafulli. The Chiefs captain re-established himself as an ICL force following two subpar season's by Crisafulli standards. The former Cleveland Indian hit a whopping .402 with three homers and 22 RBI's. He finished second in the ICL batting race and led the ICL in hits with 37. He ceratinly has to be considered as a serious candidate for the 2008 ICL MVP award.

So the 2008 "season of thunderstorms" went into the books for the Chiefs late Sunday afternoon in Wakefield, thanks to a heavy dose of veterans like Cooke, Graham, McElroy and Hughes, but not before the Chiefs put up one more good fight.

"This these guys remind me of the 1989 team " said Andre, when approached after the game. If his assessment is correct, that will mean very good news for Chiefs fans. The 1989 team he was speaking of, qualified for the ICL playoffs on the final day of the regular season but was quickly dispatched by the veteran filled Augustine A's. That same group of players went on to dominate the ICL for the next ten seasons, winning four championships, six pennants, and playing over .750 baseball, which included two record setting eighteen game unbeaten streaks.

Now, if history can only repeat itself.

Lexington Takes Series with 4-2 Win on Sunday

Foundas
Bryant's Chris Foundas Made 14th Appearance

Wakefield, MA- The defending champion Lexington Blue Sox advanced to the ICL finals with a 4-2 win over the Andre Chiefs in a game played at Walsh Field in Wakefield on Sunday afternoon.

Veteran lefty Bill Cooke pitched a complete game for the Blue Sox, allowing eight hits, striking out eight and walking none as Lexington moved on to the ICL championship series for the third time in four years.

Lexington took a 1-0 off Chiefs starter and loser Keith Forbes in the top of the second inning when Matt Gedman doubled, went to third on an infield grounder and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly to center from Jeff Nolet.

The Blue Sox lead went to 2-0 in the top of the fourth inning on a Ross Curley RBI single that scored Nolet, who had reached on a fielder's choice.

The Chiefs, as they have done all season, clawed their way back to knot the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on four consecutive singles by Andrew Hanson, Justin Crisafulli, Matt Lawlor and Paul Koslowski.

It stayed a 2-2 game until the top of the sixth inning when the Blue Sox picked up a couple of runs to re-take the lead. Nolet walked, Anthony Santos singled and Curley was hit by a Forbes pitch to load the bases. Danny Graham then drew a walk to force in Nolet and Ben Hewett followed with a RBI single to left scoring Santos to make it 4-2. Koslowski came on for Forbes and got lefties Danny Hughes swinging and Gedman on an infield grounder.

The Chiefs came up empty against Cooke in the sixth, despite a Crisafulli leadoff single, and Chris Foundas set the Sox down in the top of seventh.

Pinch hitter Paul Crisafulli led off the Chiefs seventh with a hard single to left and Matt Boleski pinch ran for him. Cooke got tough and got Mike Barbati to ground out with Boleski going to second, Brendan Pyburn to fly to left and Nate Leva to line out to shortstop Anthony Santos to end the game.

Cooke, went to 4-0 overall in 2008 with the complete game victory. Forbes, worked 5.1 innings and allowed seven hits, struck out six, walked six and hit a batter.

Blue Sox Edge Chiefs 2-1 in 9 Innings to Take Series Opener

Ellis08
Chiefs Lefty Dylan Ellis

(From www.intercityleaguebaseball.com
Lexington, MA- Blue Sox righty Marc Hewett and Chiefs southpaw Dylan Ellis hooked up in a classic pitchers duel on Saturday afternoon with Lexington scratching out a run with two away in the bottom of the ninth inning to come away with a 2-1 win. With the extra inning victory, the Blue Sox take a 1-0 lead in the best of three semi-finals series.

The Chiefs and Blue Sox traded first inning runs. Matt Lawlor gave the Chiefs a 1-0 lead in the top of the first with a sacrifice fly. The Blue Sox answered and tied the game in the bottom of the inning on a Danny Hughes RBI fielders choice.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth. Hughes led off and drew a full count walk. With Matt Gedman at the plate, Hughes advanced to second on a passed ball. Gedman then hit a hard shot labled for right field but Chiefs first baseman Paul Koslowski made a nice diving stop and just beat Gedman to the bag with Hughes going to third. Ellis then got pinch hitter Eric Poling to bounce back to him for the second out of the inning. Jack Laurendeau followed and won it for the Blue Sox when he hit a sharp grounder down the first base line. Koslowski was able make the diving stop, but the speedy Laurendeau beat his throw to first that allowed Hughes to score the winning run.

Hewett of Rollins Collge, allowed just five hits and struck out seven while raising his overall 2008 record to 9-1.

Ellis, from Merrimack College, allowed six hits and struck out four. He was tagged his first loss of the season in eight decisions.

Chiefs Drop Season Finale 11-7

Lawlor
Rookie Matt Lawlor went 3-4, to finish Regular Season at .398

Lexington, MA- The Lexington Blue Sox roughed up Chiefs starter David Garcia for six first inning runs en route to an 11-7 win in the regular season's final game for both teams. With the win the Blue Sox claim the ICL's pennant and the Chiefs head to the playoffs, finishing fourth with a 17-8-6 record.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Blue Sox starter Kevin Scanlon. After two outs, Andrew Hanson reached on an infield error, moved to third on the first of Matt Lawlor's three hits on the night, and eventually scored on a Paul Koslowski RBI single.

The Sox used first inning doubles by Danny Graham, Sean McElroy and Anthony Santos sandwiched around two base on balls, a hit batsman and a Matt Gedman RBI single, to score a half dozen runs off Garcia in the bottom of the first inning.

Joe Martini came on to start the second inning for the Chiefs and after Graham led off with his second double in as many innings, he retired the next three Lexington hitters in order.

The Chiefs responded and came up with three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the Lexington lead to 6-4. Nate Leva led off with a single off Sox reliever Sammy Steed. Hanson followed with another single and Justin Crisafulli drew a base on balls. Lawlor then singled to left driving in Leva and Hanson scored when the ball was misplayed to make it a 6-3 game. Steed got Koslowski swinging and Phil Costello walked. Mike Andre then hit a RBI grounder, which Anthony Santos made a nice play on to throw him out at first, with Crisafulli scoring on the play.

The Blue Sox picked up two unearned runs off Martini in the bottom of the third to increase thier lead to 8-4. McElroy reached on an error by Leva at shortstop and went to second on a passed ball. Jack Laurendeau then singled driving in McElroy to up the lead to 7-4. Laurendeau went to second on the throw home and to third on a fly ball to right. He scored the Sox eighth run on a long Santos sacrifice fly to center.

The Chiefs kept battling back, as they have done all season long, and cut the Blue Sox lead to 8-7 in the top of the fourth on singles from Brendan Pyburn and Lawlor, a hit batsman, a long double by Leva and a sacrifice fly from Koslowski.

Lefty Dylan Ellis came on to work the fourth and fifth innings for the Chiefs and retired all six batters he faced. Veteran Barry Foster turned the same trick for the Sox, holding the Chiefs scoreless as well in innings five and six.

Chris Foundas came on for Ellis to start the bottom of the sixth inning and experienced control problems as the Blue Sox picked up three more runs to take an 11-7 lead. A Ben Hewett two RBI double and a Gedman single, along with four walks issued by Foundas (one intentional), resulted in the Sox picking up their four runs. Righty Jose Pimentel came on for Foundas with two out and retired the only batter he faced on a ground ball.

Former UMass-Amherst ace Jesse Santos set the Chiefs down quietly in the top of the seventh as the Blue Sox picked up their 24th win of the year.

Chiefs Head to ICL Playoffs with 6-3 Win in Woburn

forbes transcript
Keith Forbes had 14 K's on Saturday

Woburn, MA- When a team loses just once in their last fourteen games good things usually result.

One of those good things happened to the Chiefs on Saturday night in Woburn as they punched their ticket to the ICL playoffs. It will be the 44th time in 46 seasons that the Chiefs will be part of the postseason party.

After 43 straight seasons of qualifying for the playoffs, the Chiefs took a two year break from play in 2004 & 2005 before returning to the ICL at the start of the 2006 season. As a virtual expansion team, with only veterans Justin Crisafulli and Dave Marsters left from the glory days of the 1990's and early 2000's, the Chiefs fielded their youngest team ever. They struggled mightily in 2006, posting a franshise worst 7-20-1 record and missing the ICL playoffs for the first time since 1958. Although the club showed marked improvement last season, a late season tailspin knocked them out of contention in late July and they finished with a less than stellar 9-18-5 mark.

Keith Forbes personally put an end to the postseason drought on Saturday when he dominated in the playoff clinching win at Ferullo Field. Forbes allowed just four hits against the Tanners and raised his league leading strikeout total to 95 with 14 more K's.

The Chiefs staked their ace to a 4-0 lead in the second inning on singles from Matt Lawlor, Phil Costello, Brendan Pyburn and Nate Leva and productive fielder's choices by Mike Barbati and Mike Andre.

It remained a 4-0 game until the Tanners got an unearned run in the third inning as a result of two Chiefs errors. Tanners starter Nick Ruocco settled down and held the Chiefs scoreless in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Tanners made things very interesting when they got to Forbes for two runs in the bottom of the fifth on two walks and a two out, two RBI single, by Ryan Doyle which cut the lead to 4-3.

The Chiefs lead went to 5-3 in the top of the sixth when Costello walked and scored on a Barbati double into the left field corner. Forbes allowed a leadoff single by Joe Smith in the sixth but struck out the next three batters in succession to send the game to the top of the seventh.

Crisafulli upped the Chiefs lead to 6-3 when he launched his 86th career homer to left field.

Forbes struck out the first batter of the seventh, got Bryan Watkins to ground out to Leva for the second out, and sent the Chiefs to the post season when he struck out Derek Dettore to end the game.

With the win, Forbes goes to 6-1-1 on the year, with an ERA of 1.61. His 95 strikeouts have come in just 65.1 innings of work. Since the start of last season, the former San Diego Padres righty has struck out 174 batters in 109 innings.

Paul Koslowski Launched 6th Inning Pinch Hit Homer

Medford, MA- Ailing veteran Paul Koslowski drilled a pinch hit solo home run leading off the sixth inning, breaking a 4-4 tie, and propelling the Chiefs to a darkness shortened 6-4 win over the Medford Americans at Playstead Park on Tuesday evening. Lefty Dylan Ellis survived a rocky four run third inning to stay unbeaten in seven 2008 decisions.

The Americans rallied from a 2-0 hole to score four times in the bottom of the third inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Chiefs started quickly in the top of the first inning against the Americans and Kevin Hayes. Mike Barbati led off with a single and Phil Costello quickly plated him with a long double to right center. Hayes got Andrew Hanson to pop up and cleanup man Justin Crisafulli looking before Matt Lawlor came up big once again with a single that scored Costello and staked Ellis to a 2-0 lead.

Ellis got the side in order in the home half of the first and the Chiefs could not increase their lead in the second despite a Mike Andre lead off single to right. Ellis struck out the side in the bottom of the second inning. The Chiefs got Barbati aboard via an infield error to start the third but he was erased when Costello lined to Hayes on the mound for an easy 1-3 doubleplay.

The Americans made plenty of noise in the third picking up all of their four runs. Callahan led off with a single to left and after a strikeout, consecutive singles by Mike Burgoyne and Steve Panza loaded the bases for Mike Kalfopoulos. Kalfopoulos hit a chopper in front of the plate that went for a single and scored Callahan. Mike Delponte followed with a RBI groundout which tied the game at 2-2. Kevin Burgoyne then drew a walk to reload the bases for Bill Smeglin who lined a single to center scoring Panza and Delponte and giving the Americans the lead at 4-2.

It stayed that way until the top of the fifth inning when the Chiefs tied the game at 4-4. Costello was hit by pitch and Hanson flew to left. Crisafulli then singled to left and Lawlor hit one back to Hayes who threw Costello out at the plate. Leva then singled scoring Crisafulli to make it 4-3. Andre then reached on an infield error that scored Lawlor and tied the game at four. Hayes averted further trouble when he got Matt Boleski swinging to end the inning.

The Americans got a single from Mike Delponte with one out in the bottom of the fifth and Kevin Burgoyne then reached on a Batbati error. The threat went by the boards when Smeglin hit into a Leva at short to Andre at first doubleplay.

Koslowski pinch hit for Nicky Dunn leading off the sixth and deposited a homer deep over the right center field fence that allowed the Chiefs to reclaim the lead at 5-4. A Barbati triple into the right field corner followed and Dan Nugent replaced Hayes on the hill for the Americans. Costello greeted Nugent with a RBI single that upped the Chiefs lead to 6-4. Hanson then singled sending Costello to third and Crisafulli struck out.  Lawlor then hit a sharp liner to right that resulted in a doubleplay with Costello being caught off third base.

Ellis retired the side in order in the bottom of the sixth and the Chiefs were at bat in the seventh when darkness set in and the game was called.

With the win the Chiefs go to 16-7-6 on the year with three games remaining in the regular season.

Forbes (13 K's, 1 Hit) Dominant in Monday's 7-0 Win

Andre Swinging
Mike Andre Had Key RBI

Medford, MA- Righty Keith Forbes allowed just one hit and struck out 13 batters in a dominating performance, leading the Chiefs to a 7-0 win over the Medford Americans on Monday night at Huskins Field.

Forbes threw 87 pitches and allowed only a second inning single to Bill Smeglin.

The Chiefs scored single runs in each of the first three frames off American's starter Zack Bunszell. Brendan Pyburn (3 for 3, sac fly, RBI) got things going in the first with a leadoff single. Nate Leva then flew out to center and Andrew Hanson followed with a fielder's choice forcing Pyburn at second. Justin Crisafulli drew a walk and Matt Lawlor gave the Chiefs their first run when he blooped a single to right center scoring Hanson.

It went to 2-0 in the second inning when Phil Costello singled, went to third on a base hit to right from Mike Barbati and scored when Pyburn lofted a sacrifice fly to center.

The Chiefs increased their lead to 3-0 in the bottom of the third. Bunszell got Leva to fly out to start the inning before Hanson singled. Crisafulli popped up and Lawlor reached on an infield error to put runners at first and third with two away. Mike Andre then singled to center scoring Hanson to give Forbes a three run margin.

Pyburn tripled into the right field corner to start the Chiefs fourth and scored on a Leva single to left center making it 4-0. Hanson followed with his second consecutive single and Crisafulli and Lawlor both drew walks to force in a run as the lead went to 5-0.

Neither club scored in the fifth and the Chiefs picked up their final two runs of the evening in the sixth on a Pyburn infield single, an infield error, a Crisafulli RBI single and another single from Lawlor.

Forbes, now 5-1-1 on the season, retired the side in order in the first, third, fourth and fifth innings and allowed just two baserunners, Smeglin's hit in the second and a two out walk to Mike Burgoyne with two outs in the sixth. Forbes got the first two batters of the seventh before being relieved by Chris Foundas who recorded a walk and a strikeout with the two batters he faced.

The Chiefs and Americans change venues and are right back at it tonight (Tuesday) when they square off in a 6:00 PM start at Playstead Park.

Medford's Hayes, Chiefs Marsters Both Strand Go Ahead Runs in 4-4 Tie

Costello
Phil Costello was 2 for 4, Including 2 RBI Double

Medford, MA- Veteran righty Dave Marsters settled down and kept the Medford Americans scoreless over the last three innings as the Chiefs and Medford Americans battled to a hard fought 4-4 deadlock on Friday night at Tufts University.

The Americans jumped out to 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Steve Tahmoush led things off with a single to center and after a strikeout, ICL veteran Mike Kalfopoulos drew a walk. Mike Delponte chased them both home with a long double to left center to provide the Americans with a quick 2-0 lead.

Americans starter Zack Rubin held the Chiefs scoreless in the home half of the first and the Medford lead went to 3-0 in the top of the second on a Steve Panza single and a Tahmoush double to right field.

It stayed 3-0 until the bottom of the the third inning when the Chiefs came up with four runs to take the lead. After Joe Martini grounded to short, Brendan Pyburn and Nicky Dunn drew consecutive walks. Matt Lawlor then hit a grounder that was scooped up by Panza at shortstop and he was able to force Pyburn at third for the inning's second out. Justin Crisafulli followed and got the Chiefs on the board with a line RBI single to center that scored Dunn. Mike Andre then drew a walk and Phil Costello tied the game at 3-3 when he doubled to right center scoring Lawlor and Crisafulli. Matt Boleski gave the Chiefs their only lead of the night with a line single to center that scored Andre. Righty Kevin Hayes, who replaced Rubin on the hill for the Americans, averted further trouble when he got Chiefs rookie Nick Leva to bounce out to second base.

The Americans wasted no time and came right back to tie it up at 4-4 in the top of the fourth on a Panza double, a sacrifice bunt and a deep sacrifice fly to center off the bat of Jim Moriera.

The Chiefs threatened in the bottom of the fourth inning but could not score. Pyburn hit a one out double into the right field corner and Dunn drew his second walk of the game. Lawlor followed with a fielder's choice groundout that forced Dunn at second. Crisafulli was issued a walk to load the bases and the Americans escaped the jam when when Moriera made a nice play on a hard Andre one hopper to end the inning.

Marsters got Mike Burgoyne to fly out and Kalfopoulos to ground out to start the fifth. Delponte then singled but was gunned out by Lawlor trying to steal second to end the Americans inning. Hayes got the Chiefs in order in the bottom of the fifth, including a long warning track fly out by Boleski to the 379' sign in rightcenter, and Marsters held the Americans scoreless in the top of the sixth.

Pinch hitter Paul Crisafulli led off the Chiefs sixth with a line single to left and Connor Bishop came on to pinch run. Bishop went to second on a wild pitch and was sacrificed to third by a Pyburn bunt. That was as far as Bishop got as Hayes got both Dunn and Lawlor to pop up to end the inning.

Marsters struck out the first two batters of the seventh before Tahmoush singled and swiped second and then third. Marsters left Tahmoush stranded when he struck out his third batter of the inning.

Hayes got Crisafulli to pop up to begin the bottom of the seventh and Andre gave the Chiefs some hope to pull out the win when he followed with a single to center. Forbes pinch ran for Andre and Hayes ended things when Costello laced a line drive right at Panza at shortstop who easily doubled up Forbes, who was running on the pitch, at first.

Marsters allowed eight hits and struck out seven while walking three.

The Chiefs are back in action on Sunday at 8:00 PM when they travel to Pine Banks in Melrose to meet the Gately A's before returning to Tufts for a rematch with the Americans on Monday at 6:00 PM.

Crisafulli (2 HRS), Garcia Gets First ICL Win as Chiefs Topple Cassell. 10-3

Crisafulli08
Justin Crisafulli Hit Two Homers, Now Hitting .423

Somerville, MA- Lefty David Garcia tossed a complete game and veteran slugger Justin Crisafulli belted two home runs to lead the Chiefs past the Cassell Club 10-3 at Trum Field on Tuesday evening.

For Crisafulli, who went three for three and reached base four times, it was the 84th and 85th home run of his illustrious ICL career. The veteran slugger also had three RBI's to move his career total to 356 tying Mike Langston at the top of the Chiefs all time list.

Crisafulli gave Garcia and the Chiefs a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning off Cassell starter and loser Bryan Lambert, a former Washington National farmhand. Nate Leva led the game off with a single to right and Mike Barbati sacrificed him to second. Following a Paul Koslowski ground out, Crisafulli launched a two run bomb to left giving the Chiefs the lead.

Garcia got the side in order in the bottom of the first and the lead went to 3-0 in the top of the second when Phil Costello, who had walked, scored on an infield error off the bat of Barbati.

Garcia escaped a mild Cassell rally in the bottom of the second when Jeff Paquette and Aaron Santos both singled but he got out of it on a 4-6-3 doubleplay, one of three DP's the Chiefs turned, and a fly out.

Crisafulli led off the top of the third with his second round tripper of the night, this one to left center, giving the Chiefs a 4-0 lead.

Cassell cut the lead in half to 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning on a Tim Dempsey double, singles from Teddy O'Reilly and Josh Mackey, and a sacrifice fly from Ted Dziuba.

Cassell reliever Drew Brzozowski got the Chiefs in order in the top of the fourth and the Cassell Club chopped the lead to 4-3 in the home half of the inning when Paquette launched a long triple to center and was plated on a Bob McCarthy sacrifice fly.

The Chiefs came right back in the top of fifth to make it 6-3 when Mike Andre drilled a two out double down the right field line scoring Crisafulli and Matt Lawlor who had both singled ahead of him.

It stayed 6-3 until the Chiefs put the game away with four runs in the top of the seventh inning. Barbati got things going with a single and Joe Martini, filling in for Koslowski who left the game with a tight quad, dropped a perfect bunt single. An intentional walk to Crisafulli loaded the bases for Lawlor who drilled a RBI single to center scoring Barbati to make it 7-3. Successive walks to Andre and Costello then forced in two more runs making it 9-3. The final run of the night came on a Nick Dunn RBI fielder's choice.

Garcia allowed eight hits, including three of the infield variety, struck out four and walked just one.

Crisafulli, who is 19 for his last 33, .576,  raised his season average to a torrid .423, good for second place in the ICL's batting race.

The win, the Chiefs fourth in a row and seventh in their last eight games, raised their season record to 14-7-5 with just six games remaining in the regular season. The first of those games will be played on Friday when they host the Medford Americans at Tufts University in a 6:00 PM start.

Matt Lawlor was 3-4 with 3 RBI's in Game One

Watertown, MA- The Chiefs swept a doubleheader from the Watertown Reds at Victory Field on Monday night, winning game one 9-1 and then taking the nightcap 8-2.

Righty Keith Forbes went five shutout innings in the opener to pick up the win and raise his record to 4-1-1. Southpaw Dylan Ellis went the distance in game two, scattering seven hits, and upped his season mark to 3-0-3.

In game one, Forbes and Reds starter Chris Dupay matched zeros for the first two frames before the visitors broke through with three runs in the top of the third inning. Phil Costello led off with a walk and Brendan Pyburn singled. Mike Barbati's sacrifice bunt attempt was a bit strong and Dupay was able to force Costello at third. Dupay then struck out Paul Koslowski swinging but torrid Justin Crisafulli picked him up when he drilled a long double to the base of the wall in left scoring Pyburn. Equally hot Matt Lawlor then lofted a single to left center just over the leap of Reds shortstop Brian Shapiro scoring both Barbati and Crisafulli to make it 3-0. Mike Andre then drew a walk but Dupay got nate Leva to bounce out to avoid further damage.

Both teams went scoreless in the fourth inning before the Chiefs picked up a couple of more runs to raise their lead to 5-0 in the fifth. Dupay got Barbati to fly out to right and Koslowski got things started with one out when he laced a double to right center and Crisafulli was intentionally walked. Lawlor then doubled to deep left scoring Koslowski and pushing Crisafulli to third. Andre followed with a long RBI sacrifice fly to right scoring Crisafulli and giving Forbes a 5-0 lead.

Forbes held the Reds scoreless in the bottom of the inning and the Chiefs added two more runs to take a 7-0 lead in the sixth off Reds reliever Mike Guanci. Matt Boleski led things off with a walk and after Costello flew out, singles from Pyburn and Barbati (RBI) and a wild pitch accounted for the runs.

Carlos Dela Cruz came on for Forbes in the bottom of the sixth and retired the Reds side in order, including two strikeouts. The Chiefs made it a 9-0 game in the top of the seventh on basehits from Andre, Leva and Pyburn.

The Reds averted the shutout against Dela Cruz in the bottom of the seventh when Brian Casey singled, Scott Ciccone reached on an error by Pyburn, Matt McEvoy flew out to left, and two more singles from Jason Hoye and Shapiro. Dela Cruz ended the game by getting Jay Olson to hit into an Andre (3B) to Pyburn (2B) to Koslowski (1B) doubleplay.

Forbes (5 innings), allowed four hits and struck out six while walking five.

In the nightcap, Ellis got stronger as the game went on to pick up his third win of the season. The Chiefs handed him a 1-0 lead in the first inning against Watertown lefty Andrew LeBrun when Pyburn reached on an infield error, stole second, went to third on a Barbati grounder and scored on a Koslowski sacrifice fly.

Ellis kept the Reds off the board in the bottom of the first and the Chiefs rewarded him with three more runs and a 4-0 lead in the top of the second. Andre was hit by a LeBrun pitch and Leva followed with a single. Boleski was then hit with another LeBrun offering to load the bases. Costello then grounded a single just inside the first base bag to score both Andre and Leva with the second and third runs of the game. The Chiefs added their fourth run when Boleski scored on an infield error off the bat of Pyburn.

The Reds got one back in the bottom of the second on a Hoye single, a base on balls to Ciccone and a RBI single from Annese. The Chiefs went in order in the third and the Reds cut the lead in half to 4-2 in the bottom of the inning on singles by Brian Casey and Shapiro and a long sacrifice fly to left from Hoye.

It stayed 4-2 until the Chiefs put the game away with four runs in the fifth inning. Barbati got things going with a single to center and Koslowski drew a walk. Crisafulli followed with a RBI single before Lawlor doubled scoring Koslowski to make it 6-2 and leave runners on second and third. LeBrun got Andre and Leva for the first two outs before Boleski lined a single to right center scoring both Crisafulli and Lawlor to bring the score to 8-2. Aram Manoukian held the Chiefs scoreless in the sixth and seventh innings.

Ellis held the Reds at bay the rest of the way, including retiring the last seven batters in a row. He struck out five and walked two.

The Chiefs, now 13-7-5, head to Trum Field in Somerville on Tuesday night for a 6:15 PM date with the first place Cassell Club. Lefty David Garcia is expected to draw the starting assignment for the Chiefs.

Dave Marsters Pitched Well in Return

East Boston, MA- ICL all-star Pete John drilled a leadoff seventh inning walk off home run as the Testa Corp. Bombers came form behind to beat the Chiefs 2-1 on Tuesday night at East Boston Stadium.

The Chiefs, who saw their five game unbeaten streak snapped, led the game heading into the bottom of the sixth inning before a Nick Martinho moon shot triple and a Bobby Barrett infield single tied the game at 1-1.

The Bombers comeback spoiled the return to the Chiefs rotation of Dave Marsters, who pitched well enough to win and blanked the hard hitting Bombers thru five innings plus.

The Chiefs lone run came in the first inning off Bombers starter Mike Hashem on a couple of walks and a double play ball off the bat of Justin Crisafulli.

Hashem and reliever James Palmer limited the previously hot Chiefs offense to just three hits, two singles from Mike Barbati and a sixth inning single by Matt Lawlor.

Marsters allowed seven hits, struck out four and walked two batters.

Dylan Ellis, 81 Pitch CG Win

Medford, MA- Southpaw Dylan Ellis of Merrimack College got 18 of the 21 outs via the ground ball as the Chiefs beat the Gately A's 5-3 on Monday evening at Tufts University.

The Chiefs infield was flawless as SS Brendan Pyburn (3 putouts, 5 assists), 2B Mike Barbati (2 putouts, 6 assists), 3B Mike Andre (5 assists) and 1B Paul Koslowski (15 putouts) backed Ellis' 81 pitch, complete game effort. The Chiefs infield quartet also turned two double plays. Ellis was the first Chiefs pitcher to throw a complete game without recording a strikeout since Ari Koufos turned the trick in a route going win over the Melrose Rams in 1992.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off A's starter Brett Manley on walks to Justin Crisafulli and Andre, a single by Andrew Hanson and a sacrifice fly from Nick Dunn.

The A's tied the game in the fourth on a single from Ricky Salvia and a long double to left by John D'Angelo.

Walks to Matt Boleski and Pyburn, a sacrifice bunt by Barbati, a walk to Koslowski, a Crisafulli RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Lawlor, upped the lead to 5-1 in the sixth.

The A's made things a little interesting in the top of the seventh when singles from D'Angelo and Bumpus preceded a long two RBI triple to rightcenter by Peter Copa that cut the lead to 5-3. Ellis ended the game when he got catcher Corey Ketterer to ground to Barbati.

Intercity League Stars Beat Boston Park League 8-3, LexSox's Graham MVP with 3-Run Homer

By Josh Frishberg
Lexington Blue Sox Media Intern

Medford, MA - For the second year in a row, the Intercity League All-Stars beat the Boston Park League All-Stars in the Joe Driscoll Memorial All-Star Classic. As the case was last year, batting and timely pitching helped secure an 8-3 victory for the ICL in front of an overflow crowd at Tufts University’s Huskins Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Intercity League exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by a monster 3-run homerun from reigning Intercity League All-Star Game MVP Dan Graham (Lexington Blue Sox/Central Connecticut) and a three-run bases-clearing triple by Jeff Wojnar (Gately A’s/Babson College).

Right when he made contact, Graham thought "it was high enough. “We talked about the short porch during [batting practice]”. The wind was blowing in strong from center field and it was basically a consensus that no home runs would be hit today. Graham even admitted, “it’s the exact opposite of last year’s game” where he coincidentally enough hit a home run as well. When asked how he felt about winning the MVP for this great memorial event, he insisted that he “doesn’t play for recognition. I don’t try to prove anything. I do it for experience and to show appreciation.”

Leadoff hitter Mark Adessa (Testa Corp. Bombers/Salem State College) was fortunate enough to get on base in his first at-bat when Angus Fredenburg (Towne Club/Wesleyan University) bobbled Adessa’s hard hit grounder. Ben Hewett (Lexington Blue Sox/Rollins College) followed with a walk, which set up Graham for his 380 foot bomb to right field. Before the dust had even settled, Justin Crisafulli (Andre Chiefs/Central Missouri) hit a line drive single to left, Matt McEvoy (Watertown Reds/Holy Cross) got hit by a pitch, and Ryan Duff (Lexington Blue Sox/St. Lawrence University) singled up the middle to load the bases. Then Wojnar laced a triple down the right field line to put the Intercity League up by a score of 6-0. Wojnar scored the seventh and final run of the inning when he came home on an infield RBI grounder by Mike Andre (Andre Chiefs/Merrimack). The ICL sent ten men to the plate in the first inning.

The dominant first inning didn’t seem to phase the Boston Park League All-Stars as they scored three runs of their own in the top of the second. Marvin Malaret (Carlson Club/Cumberland College), Corey Pontes (Towne Club/Tufts University), and Tim Reinhardt (Grossman Marketing/Vassar College) all reached and scored in Boston Park’s mini-rally. Malaret scored on a wild pitch by ICL starter and eventual winning pitcher Anthony Del Prete (Testa Corp. Bombers/Suffolk), and Pontes and Reinhardt scored on a single to right field by Boston Park League MVP Stew Park (Stockyard/MIT).

Despite this combined ten run explosion by both squads in the first inning and a half, the teams combined to score just one more run over the last seven and a half innings, with it coming on a sacrifice fly by Teddy O’Reilly (Cassel Club/University of Connecticut).

Despite pitching at the familiar surroundings of Huskins Field, Boston Park League starter Michael Stefaniak of Tufts University and the Towne Club ended up being saddled with the loss.

As players were warming up prior to the game and the wind was blowing in strongly from center field, a fan yelled out from the stands to Dan Graham: “No one’s hittin’ it outta here today!” Graham just smiled.

It’s safe to say that everyone left the field smiling this day. We know that Joe Driscoll did.

Martini got the Cassell side 1-2-3 in the second and the Chiefs upped their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third on consecutive doubles by Brendan Pyburn and Lawlor.

The hard hitting Cassell Club threw up a five spot against Martini in the bottom of third inning, courtesy of six hits (Matt Sheehan, Mackey, Klimkiewicz, Paquette, Matt Rogers and James Likis) and a walk to grab a 5-3 lead.

The Chiefs cut the margin to 5-4 in the fourth inning when Andre scored from third on a double play ball off the bat of Leva.

Jose Pimentel replaced Martini on the mound for the Chiefs in the bottom of the inning and averted more trouble when a “strike him out, throw him out” double play ended the inning and kept the Cassell lead at one run.

The Chiefs came empty in the top of the fifth and Cassell appeared to put the game away in the home half, scoring three runs against Pimentel to take an 8-4 lead, with the key hits being a Rogers single and an Aaron Santos double.

Connor Bishop came on in relief of Pimental and Lawlor ended a second consecutive inning by throwing out another runner (Sheehan) trying to steal. Three big runs came across for the Chiefs in the sixth as they cut the lead to 8-7. Mike Barbati, pinch hitting for Anderson who left the game an inning earlier with a sore knee, lined a single to right. Andre then bounced out forcing Barbati at second. Koslowski followed with his third straight single and Leva unloaded on a long double to left center scoring Andre to make it 8-5. Matt Boleski then grounded to first on a nice play by Klimkiewicz for the second out before Pyburn hit his third double of the night down the left field line scoring both Leva and Koslowski to make it a 8-7 contest. Lawlor grounded out to end the inning leaving Pyburn stranded at second base as the potential tying run.

Bishop got O’Reilly to fly to center and Mackey to fly to right to start the sixth before Klimkiewicz singled and was promptly erased at second on another nice throw by Lawlor and a superb pick up tag by Pyburn.

In the Chiefs seventh, Crisafulli led things off with a sharp single to left and Nick Dunn pinch ran. Andrew Hanson then laid down a sacrifice bunt pushing Dunn to second. Barbati then worked a full count walk to put runners on first and second with one away. Andre followed and tied the game at 8-8 with single to right that scored Dunn with Barbati going to third on the play. Koslowski then gave the Chiefs the lead when he delivered Barbati with a sacrifice fly to center.

Foundas came on to start the seventh and stuck out Paquette and got McCarthy to ground sharply to Andre at third for two quick outs. Things got a bit interesting when consecutive walks to Rogers and Santos put the tying and winning runs on base before Foundas regained his composure and struck out Likis to end the game.

Bishop (1-0) picked up the first win of his three year ICL career while Foundas chalked up his fifth save of the season. The Chiefs are off on Thursday and travel to Lexington on Friday night to face the 10-1-2 Blue Sox at 8:00 PM.

Carnival Postpones Tuesday's Game at Lexington, Chiefs Play at Cassell on Wednesday at 7:30 PM

Lexington, MA- Damage to the field in Lexington has caused the postponement of tonight's (Tuesday) Chiefs at Blue Sox game that was scheduled for 8:00 PM.
The Town of Lexington held their annual Fourth of July carnival and fireworks display over the holiday weekend, and despite the best efforts of the Lexington Recreation Department and Blue Sox management, the field will not be ready for tonight's game. It has been re-scheduled for Tuesday, August 5.

The Chiefs return to action on Wednesday at 7:30 PM when they travel to Trum Field in Somerville to take on the first place Cassell Club.

Chiefs Play to Season's Fifth Tie

Andre Swinging
Mike Andre had 2 RBI's

Wakefield, MA- In a season that has seen an unusual number of games ending in a tie, the Chiefs managed to turn the trick for the fifth time in just eighteen games, playing the Wakefield Merchants to a 4-4 standoff at Walsh Field on Sunday. The most ties the Chiefs have ever had in a season was back in 1990 when they finished with an overall record of 28-17-6 and won the ICL championship with a grueling playoff run.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 fourth inning lead when red hot Justin Crisafulli (.365) doubled to left center with two outs. Mike Andre then delivered him with a line single to right for the game’s first run. Matt Anderson followed Andre with another single to left and when Matt Lawlor singled to center scoring Andre the Chiefs had a 2-0 lead.

The Merchants got one back off Chiefs starter Keith Forbes in the bottom of the fourth on walks to Steve Langone and Jon Davison, singles by Dana D’Agostino and Mike Sorrentino, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Matt Russo.

The Chiefs increased their lead to 4-1 in the fifth off Merchants starter Kevin Tidmarsh. Rookie Mike Barbati led off with a single and after Brendan Pyburn flew out Nate Leva clubbed a long double into the left field corner that scored Barbati from first base. Paul Koslowski then drew his 15th walk of the year and Crisafulli reached on an infield single to load the bases for Andre, who worked the count full before drawing another walk from Tidmarsh, forcing in Leva to give the Chiefs a 4-1 cushion. Former Double A righty Pete Fisher came on for Tidmarsh in the inning and held the Chiefs scoreless the rest of the way.

The Merchants came back in the bottom of the sixth and cut the lead to 4-3 on a two out double from rookie Josh Band.

Wakefield forged the tie in the seventh off closer Chris Foundas on three walks and a two out game tying single from Kevin Johnson before he escaped the bases loaded jam to preserve the 4-4 final. Chiefs pitching issued a season high nine walks and out hit the Merchants eleven to five.

Hanson 7th Inning HR, Ellis, Lead Chiefs to 4-4 Comeback Tie with Cassell

Hanson
Andrew Hanson Hit 7th Inning HR

Medford, MA- Former Princeton star Andrew Hanson drilled a two out seventh inning home run and Merrimack lefty Dylan Ellis settled down to toss six scoreless innings as the Chiefs rallied back from a 4-0 hole to tie up the first place Cassell Cub at Tufts University on Wednesday night. It was the second straight tie between Cassell and the Chiefs as the two teams played to a 0-0 tie last week with Tim Dunphy and Keith Forbes each throwing a shutout.

Cassell jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Teddy O'Reilly, Josh Mackey, Jeff Paquette and Matt Rogers to go along with a sacrifice fly and a hit batsman.

The Chiefs got a run back in the bottom of the inning off Cassell ace Mike Parissi on singles from Nate Leva and Justin Crisafulli, a Matt Lawlor HBP and a walk to Mike Andre.

The Chiefs closed the gap to 4-3 in the third on rookie Mike Barbati's first ICL hit which scored Crisafulli and Lawlor who had both singled and setting the stage for Hanson's dramatics in the seventh.

Ellis allowed six hits, four in the first and two in the second inning, then proceeded to retire 16 of the last 18 batters he faced, surrendering two walks while striking out four.

Parissi gave up ten hits, including three to Crisafulli, while striking out two and walking three.

The Chiefs resume play on Sunday at 5:30 PM when they meet the Wakefield Merchants at Walsh Field at 5:30 PM. On Tuesday the Chiefs travel to Lexington to meet the Blue Sox at 8:00 PM.

Testa Knocks Off Chiefs for Second Consecutive Night, 4-0

Bishop08
Connor Bishop made his 16th Career Appearance

Medford, MA- The Testa Corp. Bombers remained red hot and raised their record to 10-3-1, moving into sole possession of second place, with a 4-0 shutout win over the Chiefs at Tufts University on Monday night. It was the second time in as many nights that the Bombers have beaten the Chiefs and the third consecutive time this season. With the loss the Chiefs fall to 7-6-3.

It was obvious early on that Chiefs ace Keith Forbes was not feeling his physical best and the Bombers took advantage. Forbes went just three innings, which was his shortest stint of the season.

The Chiefs offense remained ice cold despite the warm weather, and could not capitalize on eight walks issued by Bombers pitching. The duo of lefty James Palmer (Franklin Pierce) and righty Danny Gomez (Western Oklahoma) surrendered just two hits, a third inning Justin Crisafulli double and a sixth inning Matt Lawlor single.

Starters Palmer and Forbes matched zeros for the first two innings before the Bombers broke through with three third inning runs. Eric Pelletier led off with a walk and Jay Defillipo reached on an infield single that Forbes deflected and was unabled to be handled by shortstop Nate Leva. Forbes then struck out Pete John and got Bob Barrett to fly to left to leave two runners on with two outs. Lefty Jonathan Pollard then drilled a long double to left scoring both Pelletier and Defillipo for a 2-0 Bombers lead. Mike Navarro followed with a line single to center that scored Pollard and increased the lead to 3-0. Forbes averted further trouble when he got Mark Adessa to fly out.

Paul Koslowski replaced Forbes to start the fourth and recorded two strikeouts in the inning. The Bombers reached Koslowski for a run, and a 4-0 lead in the fifth, when John walked, Barrett was hit by a pitch, a double steal and a sacrifice fly from Navarro.

Connor Bishop, making his 16th career appearance for the Chiefs and his first this season, worked a scoreless sixth and Joe Martini did the same for the club in seventh.

The Chiefs had runners on base in every inning but the third, but could not score. The biggest threat came in the bottom of the seventh when Gomez, who came on for Palmer in the sixth, issued three walks to load the bases with two away. He kept the shutout intact when he struck out Leva swinging to end the game.

It does not get any easier for the Chiefs tonight (Tuesday) when the first place Cassell Club (11-1-1) pay a visit to Tufts University at 6:00 PM. The two teams battled to a 0-0 tie last Thursday night. Southpaw Dylan Ellis (Gloucester, MA/Merrimack) is the expected starter for the Chiefs.

Following Tuesday's game, the Chiefs will enjoy the traditional ICL Fourth of July mid season break. They will return to action next Sunday (July 6) when they travel to Walsh Field in Wakefield to meet the Merchants at 5:30 PM.

Testa Corp. Hands Chiefs 10-3 Loss

Barbati
Rookie Mike Barbati Picked Up First ICL RBI

East Boston, MA- The Testa Corp. Bombers (9-3-1) trounced the Chiefs 10-3 at East Boston Stadium on Sunday evening.

Anthony Del Prete (6 Inn, 6 hits, 8K's) picked up the win to raise his record to 5-1. Jonathan Pollard paced Testa's offense with a three for four evening including a third inning homer. Mike Navarro also had a big night for Testa with three hits. Red hot Nick Martinho (14 RBI's) drilled his league leading fourth home run of season as the Bombers rung up a dozen hits of three Chiefs pitchers including starter David Garcia (0-3) who took the loss.

Nate Leva and Mike Andre (2 RBI's) each had two hits for the Chiefs, who lost their second straight to fall to 7-5-3.
Rookie Mike Barbati knocked in the Chiefs other run with a fifth inning fielders choice. It was Barbati's first career ICL run batted in.

The Bombers and Chiefs will meet again on Monday at 6:00 PM at Tufts University.

Blue Sox Hold Off Chiefs Seventh Inning Rally to Win 2-1

Pimentel
Jose Pimentel, 5.1 Inn, 5 Hits, 7 K

Medford, MA- Rollins College righty Marc Hewett (5-0) chalked up his ICL leading fifth win to lead the 7-1-1 Lexington Blue Sox to a 2-1 win over the Chiefs at Tufts University. Hewett outdueled Chiefs starter Jose Pimentel (2-1), who worked into the sixth inning but was tagged with his first loss of the year.

A first inning passed ball and a second inning Ross Curley RBI double was all the offense the Sox needed to get the win. The Chiefs, who saw thier five game unbeaten streak snapped, scored their run in the seventh on a Brendan Pyburn infield grounder and had the tying run in scoring position before Hewett slammed the door. Hewett has now struck out 29 batters in 28 innings and has a ERA of 1.50.

Justin Crisfaulli led the Chiefs offense with two hits, while Mike Andre, Matt Lawlor, Matty Anderson and Pyburn all added singles.

The Blue Sox went ahead 1-0 in the first and threatened for much more. Holy Cross leadoff man Jack Laurendeau got things going with a single to right and Curley followed with a perfectly placed bunt single in front of the plate. Dan Graham then hit a deep fly to center on which Laurendeau tagged and went to third. With Boston College's cleanup man Jared McGuire at the plate, a pitch got by catcher Matt Lawlor allowing Laurendeau to score. Pimentel then walked both McGuire and Anthony Santos to reload the bases. The Chiefs averted further trouble when Ben Hewett bounced into a Brenden Shepard unassisted to Koslowski doubleplay.

The Chiefs tried to knot things up in the home half of the first but came up empty. Pyburn led off with a single to right and Nate Leva sacrificed him to second. Hewett bore down and got Andrew Hanson looking at strike three and Crisafulli to bounce to third on a nice effort by Curley who ranged behind the bag to make the play.

The Sox went up two zip in the second inning. Pimentel got Dan Haugh swinging but John Lerner and Coscia hit back to back singles before Laurendeau K'd for the second out. Curley then doubled just inside the right field line scoring Lerner and putting runners on second and third. Graham was intentionally walked and Pimentel got McGuire to fly to Phil Costello in right to end the inning.

The Chiefs went down quietly in the both the second and third innings and Pimentel settled  down nicely to retire the sides in order in the Lexington third and fourth. The Chiefs tried to make some noise in the fourth when Crisafulli led off and reached on an infield single.  Kolowski then lofted a long fly ball that was tracked down by Graham on the warning track in right. Shepard then hit a pea right at Lerner at second base and when Andre followed with a long single to left center the Chiefs had two runners aboard. Hewett again got tough when he had to and got Lawlor to groundout to shortstop to end the inning.

Pimentel got the Lexington side in order in the fifth and the Chiefs returned the favor by going 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning. The Blue Sox threatened to blow it open in the top of the sixth when Jett Nolet walked and went to second on a wild pitch. Pimentel got Ben Hewett to fly out and the Chiefs chose to intentionally walk the right handed hitting Haugh to put runners on first and second. Koslowski came on to face lefties Lerner and Coscia and got a pop up and a nice play on a grounder to Shepard to keep it a 2-0 game.

A Crisafulli single was all the Chiefs could muster in the sixth and Koslowski kept the Sox off the board in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the inning, Hewett got Andre for the first out when he flew to center. Lawlor then singled and Nicky Dunn ran for him. Pinch hitter Matt Anderson made things interesting when he lined a single to right to put runners on the corners with one out. Pyburn followed with a RBI grounder to Nolet at first scoring Dunn and moving Mike Barbati, who had run for Anderson to second. That's where the Chiefs rally ended as Hewett struck out Doug Heald swinging to end the game.

Pimentel worked 5.1 innings and allowed two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven and issuing four base on balls. Koslowski went 1.2 innings and gave up two hits anfd struck out a batter.

The Chiefs begin an important home and home series with the Testa Corp. Bombers at East Boston Stadium on Sunday at 5:30 PM before both teams travel back to Tufts for a rematch on Monday evening at 6:00 PM.

"Deja Vu All Over Again", Cassell-Chiefs Play Another 0-0 Tie

Andre Swinging
Mike Andre had 2 of the Chiefs 5 hits

Medford, MA- Like Yogi Berra said “it’s déjà vu all over again”.

Last season Keith Forbes and the Chiefs ran into now New York Mets southpaw Jim Fuller and the two teams battled to a 0-0 tie. On Wednesday night another Cassell lefty, Tim Dunphy, matched Forbes pitch for pitch and the end result was once again a scoreless tie.

Both teams had some serious chances to break the scoring ice but when all was said and done, Forbes and Dunphy both kept their respective shutouts intact.

Things started real shaky for the Chiefs in the first when the first three Cassell batters, Teddy O’Reilly, Josh Mackey and Jimmy Roche, all reached base via two errors and an infield single. In typical Forbes fashion, the former San Diego Padre reached back and struck out Jeff Paquette, Ted Dziuba and Matt Basteri in succession to escape the major league jam.

The Chiefs threatened in the bottom of the first when Brendan Pyburn led off with a single. The Cassell defense did their best to mirror the Chiefs shaky start when Nate Leva reached on an error putting runners on first and second with no outs. Dunphy, who pitched professionally last season for the Namur Angels of the Belgian Major League, got the Cassell boys out of it by striking out Andrew Hanson, getting Justin Crisafulli to fly to center and Paul Koslowski to groundout.

Forbes got Cassell in order in the top of the second and the Chiefs got another runner in scoring position in the bottom of the inning. Mike Andre singled to right with one out and went to second when the throw back to the infield got away. Dunphy pitched out of it getting Matt Lawlor to fly out and Phil Costello to ground to first.

Neither team threatened again until Cassell got the first two runners aboard in the fifth on a Bob McCarthy single to left and a walk to Aaron Santos.  Forbes once again stepped it up a notch and struck out both Matt Rogers and Mackey sandwiched around a O’Reilly flyout that ended the inning.

Lawlor singled leading off the Chiefs fifth and Costello sacrificed him to second. Dunphy pulled another escape when he got Pyburn to fly to left and Leva to lineout to right.

Roche led off with a single up the middle to start the Cassell sixth but was quickly erased when Paquette, who started this season in the Toronto Blue Jays organization, bounced into a 6-4-3 double play.

The night’s best scoring chance came in the Chiefs sixth when Crisafulli laced a single to left with one away. Koslowski followed with long bomb to right that certainly had home run distance but curled two feet foul. Dunphy regained his composure and got both Koslowski and Brenden Shepard to both fly out.

Cassell went in order in the top of the seventh and the Chiefs threatened once again to win it in the bottom half of the inning. Andre rapped his second hit of the night to right and speedy Mike Barbati pinch ran. Lawlor sacrificed Barbati to second but Dunphy became stingy one more time and struck out Costello and got Pyburn to groundout to end the game.

Forbes struck out twelve and allowed three hits. Dunphy allowed just five hits and struck out two.

The Chiefs remain in second place with a 7-3-3 record while Cassell goes to 10-1-1 on the year.

The defending champions Lexington Blue Sox visit Tufts University tonight (Thursday) at 6:00 PM. Righty Jose Pimentel (2-0), who pitched in the Padres organization last season, will get the start for the Chiefs.

Merchants and Chiefs Settle for 3-3 Tie on Sunday, Monday vs. Ameriacns Postponed

Wakefield, MA- The Chiefs and Wakefield Merchants battled to a sloppy 3-3 tie at Walsh Field on Sunday evening. Both teams squandered chances to win the game and had to settle for one point each. With the tie, the Chiefs move into sole possession of second place with a 7-3-2 mark, good for 16 points.

The Merchants used singles from John Zaggaria and Steve Langone, an outfield throwing error and a miscue at shortstop to score an unearned first inning run and take a 1-0 lead off Chiefs starter Dylan Ellis (Gloucester, MA/Merrimack College)

The Chiefs capitalized on some equally shoddy Merchants defense to take a 3-1 second inning lead off Wakefield veteran starter and former Chicago Cub farmhand Steve Coffey. Justin Crisafulli and Paul Koslowski both singled and Mike Andre's infield grounder was thrown wide of first allowing Crisafulli to score. Torrid shortstop Brenden Shepard (Boxford, MA/Stonehill College) who is now 12 for 29, .414, then delivered Koslowski with a sacrifice fly to center for a 2-1 Chiefs lead. After Matt Boleski grounded out, catcher Matt Lawlor reached on another Merchant infield error allowing Andre to score that extended the margin to 3-1.

The Chiefs threatened to expand the lead in the third (Andrew Hanson leadoff single), the fourth (singles from Mike Andre and Lawlor) and the sixth (Nate Leva leadoff single), but came up empty on each occasion before the Merchants tied the game up.

In the sixth, Mike Sorrentino reached on a throwing error and Dana D'agostino drew a one out walk. Kevin Johnson then singled to right to load the bases. Closeer Chris Foundas (Needham, MA/Bryant University) was summoned from the bullpen to replace Ellis and experienced some control issues, walking both Matt Russo and John Davison to force in two runs before getting out of the jam with a strikeout and a popup.

The Chiefs got a runner in scoring position with one out in the seventh via a long Hanson gap double. Coffey stranded Hanson there when Crisafulli grounded out and Koslowski's long fly ball to right was tracked down by Taylor von Kriegenbergh to end the inning and another Chiefs scoring chance.

Foundas surrendered a a two out walk to Von Kriegenbergh in the bottom of the seventh but it ended in a tie when Doug Heald gobbled up Dana D'Agostino's grounder and fired to Koslowski at first to conclude the night for both teams.

Ellis worked 5.1 innings and allowed six hits while striking out one. Coffey, in his first start of the season, gave up eight hits and also struck out one in a gutty complete game effort.

Monday's scheduled game against the Medford Americans was postponed due to heavy rain showers.
The Chiefs and Americans will try again on Tuesday at Tufts at 6:00 PM. On Wednesday the Chiefs host the Cassell Club and on Thursday the defending champion Lexington Blue Sox pay a visit to Tufts.

"Friday Night Frights" Before Shepard Rallies Chiefs to Third Straight Win

Shepard
Brenden Shepard had 4 RBI's
Medford, MA- The Chiefs and the Mooney Dental Tanners hooked up in a wild seventh inning switch of emotions with the Chiefs eventually coming out on top 6-5 at Tufts University on Friday night.

Ace righty Keith Forbes took a no-hitter and a 3-0 lead into the last inning but the Tanners rallied for five big runs on a couple of walks, a costly infield error, an infield single, a passed ball and a bases loaded triple by Jon Smart.

Red hot Brenden Shepard ( 2 for 4, double, 4 RBI’s) bailed out the Chiefs out when he delivered a two out, two strike, two RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to give them the walk off win.

Closer Chris Foundas picked up the win in relief of Forbes. Forbes (2-0) worked six innings plus and allowed just the two seventh inning hits while striking out seven and walking four.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Mike Andre delivered Andrew Hanson, who had walked and stole second, with a two out single to rightcenter. It stayed a 1-0 game until the sixth when Shepard unloaded a long two RBI double to left. In the inning, Justin Crisafulli doubled with one away to the 354 foot sign in left and Mike Barbati pinch ran. Paul Koslowski walked and Andre popped up before Shepard brought both Barbati and Koslowski around.

The win was the third straight for the Chiefs and raised their record to 7-3-1 moving them into a second place tie in the ICL standings heading into Sunday’s game at Walsh Field in Wakefield at 5:30 PM.

Nine Run Inning Gives Chiefs 13-5 Comeback Win Over A's

Dylan Ellis Picked Up Relief Win

Medford, MA- The Chiefs rallied from a 13-5 hole with a huge nine run sixth inning to get past the Gately A's 13-5 on Thursday evening at Tufts University.

Brenden Shepard was three for four to lead the Chiefs. Lefty Dylan Ellis picked up his first win of the campaign with 3.2 innings of scoreless ball in relief of starter David Garcia.

The Chiefs sent thirteen men to the plate in their nine run inning to win their second in row following yesterday's 7-1 win over the Watertown Reds.

Chiefs Go to 5-3-1 with 7-1 Win Over Watertown

Crisafulli08
Justin Crisafulli had a 3 RBI Double

Medford, MA- Chiefs pitchers Jose Pimentel, David Garcia and Chris Foundas combined on a one-hitter as the Chiefs beat the Watertown Reds 7-1 at Tufts University on Tuesday evening. Justin Crisafulli's bases clearing double in the sixth inning was the big hit for the Chiefs.

The Chiefs got out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Andrew Hanson and Crisafulli both singled with two outs and Matt Anderson reached on an error. Mike Andre followed with a tough hop infield single scoring Hanson.

The Reds quickly tied it in the top of the second on a single by Jason Hoye, a passed ball, a balk and a sacrifice fly from Brian McDavitt.

The Chiefs went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the second on a Brenden Shepard double, a Brendan Pyburn single and a perfectly executed double steal.

It went to 3-1 in the fourth on singles from Paul Koslowski and Pyburn and an infield error. In the sixth, consecutive singles from Shepard, Pyburn and Nate Leva loaded the bases before Shepard raced home on wild pitch to make it a 4-1 affair. Hanson drew a walk to reload the bases before Crisafulli hit a deep shot to left center clearing the bases for a 7-1 lead.

Pimentel (2-0) picked up the win working five innings, striking out four, walking four and hitting a batter. Garcia worked one inning and Foundas went the seventh allowing one walk and striking out two.

The Chiefs finish off the week by hosting the Gately A's at Tufts on Thursday and the Mooney Dental Tanners on Friday with both games starting at 6:00 PM.

Rookie Ramsey, Ex Pro Fisher Silence Bats in Merchants 6-2 Win

peter fisher
Former AA RHP Pete Fisher

(Medford, MA) The Wakefield Merchants handed the Chiefs their second consecutive loss, 6-2 at Tufts University on Thursday evening. Trinity bound lefty James Ramsey chalked up the first win of his ICL career with five innings of two hit, three strikeout pitching.

Former University of Alabama standout Pete Fisher, who pitched nine professional seasons including Double A stints with the MinnesotaTwins and Boston Red Sox, worked the final two innings for the Merchants allowing just one hit while striking out two.

The Merchants capitalized on some shoddy Chiefs outfield defense to score their six runs in the first two innings. The big hit for Wakefield came off the bat off veteran Dana D’Agostino who cranked a three RBI second inning double off Chiefs starter and loser Joe Martini
.

Martini, making his first career start, worked the first four innings for the Chiefs and gave up five hits and three earned runs while striking out three, walking three and hitting a batter.

In an oddity to the game and one of the few bright spots for the Chiefs, Martini in an 1-2-3 fourth, and relievers Jose Pimentel (2 innings, 0 hits, 3 K's) and Paul Koslowski (1 inning, 0 hits, 1K) did not allow a Merchant to reach base in the last four innings, retiring 12 batters in a row.

The Chiefs could not take advantage of their outstanding bullpen work and managed only three singles from Brendan Pyburn, Phil Costello (RBI) and Koslowski (RBI).

The Chiefs will attempt to get their offense back on track on Monday evening at 6:00 PM when they host the Medford Americans at Tufts University at 6:00 PM.

Whalen, Vona Lead Tanners Rally Past Chiefs, 3-2

Garcia
LHP David Garcia Took Tough Loss

Medford, MA- Mooney Dental Tanners righty Bobby Whalen of Colby Colllege threw a his second complete game of the season as the Woburn based club erased a 2-0 Chiefs lead to win 3-2 at Tufts University on Tuesday evening.

Chiefs starter David Garica suffered the loss for the Chiefs, but pitched well enough to win. Garcia worked six innings plus, allowing three hits, two of the infield variety, while striking out eight. Walks proved to be costly as two of the batters he walked eventually came around to score.
Whalen, who threw a complete game shutout at the Watertown Reds in his other start of season and is now 2-0 with a stingy 1.00 ERA, allowed just four hits and struck out six.

Garcia got the Tanners in order in the first and the Chiefs missed their first scoring opportunity in the bottom of the inning. Brendan Pyburn reached on an infield error and promptly stole second with no outs. He went to third on a wild pitch but that was as far as he got as Whalen struck out both Brenden Shepard and Andrew Hanson and got Justin Crisafulli to pop up.

Garcia struck out the Tanners side in order in the second and the Chiefs went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the inning when Phil Costello rapped a long double to left scoring catcher Matt Lawlor (single) and Paul Koslowski (walk).

It stayed that way until the fourth when the Tanners cut the lead to 2-1 on an infield hit, two walks and a RBI single by Kevin Vona. The Tanners tied it up at 2-2 in the sixth on a single, stolen base, a walk, a Garcia balk, and a sacrifice fly from Bob Wronski.

The Chiefs threatened to retake the lead in the sixth but came away empty. Criasfulli led the inning off with a single to left and speedy Nick Dunn pinch ran for him. Mike Andre, after fouling off two sacrifice bunt attempts, struck out swinging. Lawlor then reached on an infield error and Koslowski walked to load the bases with one out. Whalen then got Costello swinging and ended the threat when Doug Heald grounded out.

The Tanners won it the top of the seventh. Garcia issued his fifth walk of the night to Andrew Worden and relieved by closer Chris Foundas. Dettore sacrificed Worden to second and Foundas then hit Smart with a 0-2 pitch. Vona then singled to right and Worden beat Costello's throw home to give the Tanners the win.The Chiefs went in order in the seventh when Pyburn flew to deep right, Matt Anderson, pinch hitting for Shepard, fouled out to first and Hanson flew to center.

The Chiefs are back in action on Thursday night at 6:00 PM when they host the Wakefield Merchants at Tufts University. Arlington native Joe Martini (0-0) is expected to make his first start of the season.

Matt Anderson Clutch 6th Inning Single

Medford, MA- Former Franklin Pierce star Matt Anderson plunked a two out RBI single into right center field in the sixth inning to cap a Chiefs rally that allowed them to tie the Lexington Blue Sox 3-3 at Tufts University on Monday evening.

The Chiefs jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the home half of the second inning. Justin Crisafulli was hit by a Steve Bodnar pitch. Mike Andre, after fouling off nine straight pitches, drew a full count walk. Anderson they laid down a sacrifice bunt and the throw to get him at first was low and skipped by first baseman Matt Gedman allowing Crisafulli to come around and score. Bodnar averted further trouble in the inning when he struck out Paul Koslowski, got Phil Costello to fly to center and ended the threat when Matt Lawlor grounded out.

Chiefs starter Dylan Ellis held the defending ICL Champs scoreless until the top of the fourth when the Sox posted their only three runs of the game. The trouble began when Ellis hit Jared McGuire with a pitch and moved him to second when he uncorked a wild pitch. University of Vermont catcher Jeff Nolet then promptly delivered McGuire with an opposite field single to right tying the game at 1-1. An out later, Gedman of UMass-Amherst and son of former Boston Red Sox catcher Rich Gedman, unloaded on an Ellis fastball for a two run homer to right and a 3-1 Lexington lead.

The Chiefs rallied to tie the game in the sixth and threatened to take the lead. Brenden Shepard singled to center and Andrew Hanson stayed hot by drilling a long double to right. Crisafulli followed with a RBI sacrifice fly to left that scored Shepard and made it 3-2. Sox Manager Rick DeAngelis then went to the bullpen and brought in southpaw Tom Klem to face the left handed hitting Andre. Andre then grounded to second pushing Hanson to third. Anderson was next and delivered Hanson on a 1-2 pitch. Rookie Mike Barbati pinch ran for Anderson and following a walk to Koslowski, Barbati was caught off second by Nolet to end the inning.

Closer Chris Foundas came on for Ellis to start the seventh and was impressive again, getting the Blue Sox in order. A Lawlor one out single gave the Chiefs some hope in the seventh but reliever Eathan Burton got Brendan Pyburn to fly to short left and Shepard swinging to end the game and preserve the tie. The Chiefs record goes to 4-1-1 with the tie while the yet to be beaten Blue Sox are 4-0-1.

Ellis worked the first six frames allowing seven hits and striking out five. He did not walk a batter.

The Chiefs send big southpaw David Garcia of the Dominican Republic to the hill on Tuesday night in search of his first ICL win when they host the Mooney Dental Tanners of Woburn in a 6:00 PM start at Tufts University.
