Amherst Baseball Leagues: 2009 Season Divisions

Babe Ruth League
This competitive league is for ages 13-15.

All games are played at Ziomek and Middle School Fields. Tryouts are held in March at the Amherst College Cage. The regular season starts in early May and ends in the middle of June. There is typically a round of playoffs which will determine the league champion.

After the regular season and playoffs are complete, each age group typically participates in various tournaments. Each of the age groups starts with a District tournament and could advance to the state level if they continue to win. The more important tournament for this division is for 15 year olds. This competitve tournament begins by attempting to win at the state district level, then at the state sectional level, on their way to the Babe Ruth World Series.

Players on a Babe Ruth team and the Mickey Mantle team with a conflict between the two MUST choose the Babe Ruth event.


Mickey Mantle League
This competitive league is for 16 year olds but some 15 year are allowed to participate.

This is a Travel league played against other teams in the Western Mass area. The season begins in early June and runs through July. All home games are played at Ziomek and Middle School Fields. There is typically a round of playoffs which will determine the league champion. It is possible for teams who win the league to advance to state and regional levels. In this case, it is possible for the seaon to run into late July.

Tryouts are required to become a member of the team.

Players on a Babe Ruth team and the Mickey Mantle team with a conflict between the two MUST choose the Babe Ruth event.


American Legion
Ages 16-19

Little League
This competitive league is coed and for ages 10-12.

All games are played at the Mill River Fields in North Amherst. Tryouts are held in March at the Amherst College Cage. The regular season starts in late April and ends in the middle of June. There is typically a round of playoffs which will determine the league champion. The season typically ends when the school year ends.

After the regular season and playoffs are complete, each age group typically participates in various tournaments around the area. The more important tournament for this age group is for 12 year olds. This competitve tournament begins by attempting to win at the state district level, then at the state sectional level, on their way to the Little League World Series.   


Prep League
This recreational league is coed and generally designed for ages 8-9.

This is the division which prepares a player for Little League. Games are played at various fields in Amherst. There are no tryouts. All players that sign up will be placed on a team. The season typically starts in mid to late May and ends in the middle of July. There are no playoffs in this division.

This is typically the first exposure of players pitching to other players. Players who are not ready for "live" pitching have the option of having coaches pitch to them.


Pee Wee League
This recreational league is coed and generally designed for ages 6-8.

Games are played at various fields in Amherst. There are no tryouts. All players that sign up will be placed on a team. The season typically starts in late April and ends in the middle of June. There are no playoffs in this division.

In this division, coaches typically pitch to the players on their team. Players who are not ready for "live" pitching have the option of using a tee to hit.


Tee Ball League
This is a recreational league that is coed and generally designed for ages 5-6.

Games are played at Mill River Fields in North Amherst. There are no tryouts. All players that sign up will be placed on a team. The season typically starts in June and ends in the middle of July. There are no playoffs in this division.

This is usually a players first exposure to baseball. Some simple instruction is given at this level but this is typically a fun league designed to get players interested in the game of baseball.
