Alabama Lady Cats: Tournaments Played

THE CATS TAKE THE ARDMORE SHOOTOUT
WHAT A GREAT TOURNAMENT WE HAD IN ARDMORE. BUT AS ALWAYS JOHNNY TRIMBLE PUT ON A GREAT SHOW. JOHNNY HAS BEEN AROUND AAU BASKETBALL SINCE NAISMITH NAILED THE FIRST VEGGIE BASKET TO A YMCA WALL IN MASS. ALL THE GAMES WERE AGAINST TOP NOTCH COMPETITION AND THIS IS WHAT THE LADY CATS ARE AFTER. IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE A GAME SUMMARY OF EACH INDIVIDUAL GAME CLICK ON "SCHEDULES" IN THE COLUMN ON THE LEFT AND READ ABOUT HOW EXCITING EACH GAME ACTUALLY WAS. I HEARD SO MANY FANS FROM EVERY TEAM SAY THEY CERTAINLY GOT THIER MONEY'S WORTH. I THOUGHT IT WAS THE NEXT BEST THING TO THE MENS FINAL FOUR.(IN FACT I THINK SOME OF THE 10U GAMES WHERE BETTER THAN THE MENS FINAL). BUT A SPECIAL THANKS TO JOHNNY FOR A GREAT TOURNAMENT. LETS ALL BE SURE TO COME OUT AND SURPORT OUR LADY CATS IN BIRMINGHAM NEXT WEEKEND.

SOME CATS GET SWAYED, SOME CATS SWOOSHED
This weekend The Alabama Lady Cats Traveled to Clay/Chaulkville High School to play in the Swoosh Tournament. The only thing that was concerning the coach before going was that out of the nine girls that originally formed the team only four were going to be there. It's hard to run many plays( or should I say prays.) with only four girls who have played together. We had worked so hard on the press Tuesday and Thursday nights at practice, I just knew we would shut some people down with it. What I did'nt think about was that no one at the game except Emily Screws from Bob Jones had ran the back part of it so needless to say the press was not as effective as I had anticipated.
Now don't get me wrong we had some great players who came to help us out of a jam and they did a great job. We won the first Game against a good team from southwest Alabama. They were quick and aggressive but had only been together two years so we could handle them and won by 11. But the next Team was a 17u team from Tenn. they are a High School Varsity team (Tenn. doesn't have a 50% rule) and they started in a 1-3-1 half court trap defense. Now Dumb Coach (I can say that since Dumb Coach is writing this. Your not supposed to know that.) Now Dumb Coach has a offense that will work but has he put it in NOOOO!! So we spend most of the first half trying to get that in. Plus we all went to Jim and Nick's Bar B Que after the first win and then came back and slept it off in the bleachers. (Eat your heart out Ed Vance, I was thinking about you while I was eating that Chicken). We played the worst defense I've seen all year. I thought I one girl apologized for being in the way.We did not play our A game. Think it can't get worse, We're running an hour behind in Gym B where we are playing, Gym A is on time, so we literally go out side and hide so no one can find us. We do send Greg Screws in to make sure we don't forfeit. He comes back and says we have 15 minutes to be ready to play the next one. We did a great job but just ran out of gas with about 3 minutes left. We lost that one and came home. So I hope all you Lady Cats that missed the games and got swayed by the boys at proms, are having fun dancing cheek to cheek with your latest flame, even while I'm writing this sad story. But we learned a lot about things that need work and Keri and Emily stepped up and worked hard hardly ever coming out of the games. Jeselyn hardly ever came out at point and did a great job running the new girls around to where they were supposed to be. All the girls did a super job under the circumstances. I would like to see us play the Tenn. team again with the half court trap offense in place. And I'm talking about with just the girls we had there today. If we had the whole team there and we all played our A game, we would have run them all out of the Gym. And if anybody reading this doubts me Just E-mail for a game and we will be more than happy to prove it. To get the scores and the break down of each game click on Schedules and go to each individual game.

Should I Stay or Should I Go!!!
This was the question the cats were asking themselves Saturday night. It is far to complicated to go into now, but to make a long story short we studied the teams and the scores and made a decision to leave Atlanta early. Not knowing the outcome of Sunday's game between the Suwanne Stars and the Etowah Eagles. We left Atlanta and the tourney and a shot at the championship if the Suwanne Stars should only win by 7 points. We thought we knew!, We thought they would win by 20+ but they didn't They won 64 to 11!!! Read that again if you think it is a mistake. It is 64 to 11!! Glad we left early instead of having to hear that news and then having to drive home. I wold have loved to have played this team we would have won. Our biggest problem is that we don't know how good we can be.
The weekend in Atlanta was a bitter sweet victory for the Lady Cats. We lost Friday night without Jeselyn or Lynsie to the South East Dekalb Screaming Eagles. They were a good team and we may not have won if we had Kobe, but the four hour drive over and having to use people where they have not practiced had its effect. Now Saturday brought a different story. We knew with a loss we would be battling up hill to get a Wild Card slot that would allow us to play in the finals. But we did what we had to do and that was to beat the next two teams by more than thirteen points. This would create the largest points differential allowed by the tournament directors ,we beat the Freedom by 30 something and then beat the WGAA Wildcats by 12. The Wildcats were both big and quick and we had to keep Keri, Emily, and Stefanie in the game nearly all the time to be able to guard their big people. I put Chrystal Guiles in at one point for Emily, and I thought she is going to get killed down under by those big girls on the boards, But to my surprise she not only held her own she pulled several rebounds, and even shot a hook over the big Chinese girl. Now a word about Terri Pitta WHAT A SHOT!!!! Terri goes in before the half to take over point duties for Jeselyn Benefield. She does a great job but the best part is she hits a shot from behind the half court stripejust as the buzzer sounds to end the quarter. Then Hailey Finley from Madison Co. comes in the Fourth Quarter turning in 6 points and who know the assist in the 4th quarter and runs the floor on offense like a bandit runs from a bank robbery. The Wildcats just seemed like they were wiped out with our sprint to the finish. Great jobs were turned in by everyone but the roles that these girls played were worth special mention.
Jessica Thompson turned in three great games scoring 22 against the Wildcats. Jessica always gives you every thing she has and leaves it all on the floor. Could not do it with out you Jessica. You run the floor play D and bring a mind to the game that any coach would love to have on the floor.
Stefanie Vance did a great job this weekend with tough post play. (I thought the refs called too many fouls! Did any body else feel this way. Please forward your respose to Ed Vance at Ivalee School.) Stefanie pulled rebounds and posted up against girls that were taller and heavier than her and won out consistently. Great job Stefanie! Remember just take it up and take it strong! Get me the foul and the two! I want it all!!! Super Job this weekend.
Emily Screws, In the words of the late great Hank Williams Sr. PRAISE THE LORD I SAW THE LIGHT. GREAT GAME "E" You pulled bounds and took the offensive ones back up quick. Just remember everyone loves a point guard that can rebound. You taught me something this weekend, I love having smart players. Tell you later.
Keri Havis did a great job she rebounded and took care of some girls that were twice her size. She played out of poistion several times and displayed an ability to come in cold and take over on friday night. Saturday we could not have done without her and her efforts.
Jeselyn Benefield did a great job Saturday at point guard and got the ball where we needed it when we needed it. She also played well on defense creating ball pressure out front. Remember girls we can not let them stand out there and look over things like it was a Sears and Roebuck Wish Book. Jeselyn hit some important 3's when we needed them and came off a pick on motion by Hailey Finley, pulled up and hit a pretty jumper. Geat job Jeselyn! She looked down the court and kept the ball moving to the right people.

Successfull Week-End In Elkmont
I think all the parents will agree we are glad to have our girls safe and sound and for the most part in one piece, after the rough and physical games that they played.
If Lynda will help me I'll try to add News after every event that the girls take place in, and if you all as parents have any in put for the News section E-mail me and I'll get it posted so we can all see. Things like what the girls are doing out side of Basketball, Community Events you want to promote, etc.
I'm not one to Anaylize the game, so I'll just say congratulations to all our fine young ladies for their efforts and Celebrate the Victories, Learn from the Defeates.
