Mission Statement since 1976-2009

October 6, 2009

Attention:  Judy-USATF

This letter is written to inform you that as of September 28 , 2009, The Alexander’s Light’n Express (ALEX) Youth Track & Field Club was officially discontinued.

As you are aware, Mz A and I retired last year and relocated to Texas.  Since that time, Coach Cedric has assumed the duties of Head Coach.  He has done an outstanding job, however he will also be moving on.

A.L.Ex. has been a major part of our lives for the last 33 years.  We have truly been blessed. Our hearts are full of love and pride for each Athlete, Coach, Team Mom and Parent that made this organization so successful.

Words can’t express our appreciation and gratitude for the wonderful experiences gained as part of this organization.

San Diego has a plethora of youth track and field teams and we pray that you continue working in the sport with these teams.

Again, thank you Judy for all your help, we miss you but will never forget you.

No one will be authorized or permitted to use Alexanders Lightn’ Express Team Name, Mission Statement, Logo, By Laws Rules nor Physical Style Forms. Nor shall they compete under the name of A-L-EX or any other means that is a reflection to A-L-EX in any way.   Head Coach Nelson AlexanderFounder, A.L.Ex. Coach Nelson M Alexander was awarded the USA Youth Track/Field 2002 National West Coach "Coach of the Year" Awarded at the National Convention in Kansas City, MO. "Hat's Off to Coach Alexander..."YOU CALL IT, I CAN'T CALL IT" Coach and Mz A are already into their 30th Year... Coach and Mrs. "A" IT'S CELEBRATION TIME! "Cake by Rhodes Catering" "A.L.Ex. Logo Design by son-Timothy Bernard Alexander-30 years ago , Tim went to be with the Lord in 1994. He is truly missed-There is a special Award given each year in honor of Timothy." Timothy was also an important key to ALEX. He was an outstanding coach and in line to take over the rings of ALEX before his death.
ALEXANDER'S LIGHT'N EXPRESS (A.L.Ex.) has been in existence since 1976. It is the oldest youth track and field club in San Diego. This year ALEx will celebrate 30 years serving youth in the San Diego Community. The club is named after its founders and owners Mr. Nelson Alexander and his wife Mrs. Janie Alexander (Coach A and Mrs. A.) ALEx is fortunate to have a staff rated among the best in all of youth track and field. Coaches volunteer their time and expertise and all have been certified by the United States Amateur Track and Field (USATF) Association. Mr. and Mrs. Alexander have been the recipients of numerous citations and awards locally as well as on the national level. In addition to receiving the Channel 10 Leadership Award, they were honored for their tireless efforts and support of the Police Athletic League mission of "Join a Team, Not a Gang."

The Mission Statement: "To encourage, motivate and inspire children to do their best. To provide children with appropriate training and skill necessary to be successful not only in track and field, but to foster the self-discipline that will benefit the child in all aspects of life." While all members may not a budding Michael Johnson, Flo Jo, Gail Devers, Leslie Coons, Marion Jones or Monique Henderson, each child has a sense of pride and accomplishment instilled in them. A caring, teaching environment is maintained at practice as well as track meets. Since ALEx is a youth track and field club, all relationship are with parents or fostered by parents. The extent of our formal relationships with other local non-profit organizations is mainly with our sister youth track and field clubs. Youth track and field is truly a family sport. Many fathers become coaches and many mothers become Team Moms. It is through the support of these families and ultimately their volunteer efforts that form the basis for fund raising activities. ALEx is proud to have a diverse membership. This year alone, ALEX have over 125 athletes registered. Membership is open to all children between the ages of 4 and 17. Practices are held at Serra High School in the Murphy Canyon/Tierrasanta community. Since there are youth track clubs in most communities throughout San Diego, the members are predominantly those that live within a 10 mile radius. Mr. Alexander is considered the "father" of youth track and field in San Diego and as such, all of the other clubs have started under his tutelage. Many of our member's parents are in the military. Subsequently there are times when a father or mother "at sea" or fighting in Iraq for long periods of time. Many coaches serve as mentors and big brothers. This interaction helps to fill a void for children. A main goal of ALEx is to prepare children for high school. A regular review of report cards is conducted. An overall C+ GPA (2.5) must be maintained in order to participate. ALEx will continue to exist as long as there are children interested in learning the sport of track and field. The club was started 30 years ago with Coach and Mrs. A's daughter(Dee)Demetria(Alexander) Overmyer. She was only 8 years old. She is now married to Alan Overmyer with 4 beautiful children, Clayton, Sydney, Timothy and Austin.  They now live in Texas. Coach and Mrs. A thought it would be over when Dee was able to run in high school. But the Lord had a different course for them. Now, 30 years later, they are still going strong. Our Executive Board and Coaching Staff have been and continue to be dedicated to providing a quality youth track and field club experience for all who are interested. Our program will sustain itself in this fashion as long as there are children that enjoy track and field!  Quote: "I think we still have at least 1 more good year" Copyright (c)February, 2006 by Alexanders Light'n Express All rights reserved.
