Freeze Prepares for Rising Stars
The team is in major transformation as we say goodbye to many of our players who graduated this year. We wish them all the best of luck and good fortune as they head off to school! The team recently picked up some additional players to make another trip to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Welcome Ashley, Jennifer, and Lauren. More updates will follow really soon.
Freeze Ties for Ninth at ASA Western Nationals
The Freeze tied for ninth during the ASA Western Nationals held in St. Louis, MO. The team finished with a 3-2 record and lost both of their games by only one run each. The team had many individual highlights. You can check out the tournament at http://www.softball.org/stlouis/Text/Tournaments/2003/JO16Ubnat/admin/contents.htm#Contents .
Freeze Coaches Share Duties at Service High School
John and Kevin will coach two teams this year. The two were named as head coaches for the Service High School Lady Cougars. The Lady Cougars have a rich softball history finishing 2nd in State last year. The coaches will build on past success as the team works to regain the title. Many past and present Freeze players are Lady Cougars too.
Alaska Freeze adds 18U Team for 2002
The Alaska Freeze is pleased to announce the forming of an 18U travel team for the 2002 season. We are looking for strong COMMITTED players for this team.
The Freeze 18U team has submitted an application to participate in the Colorado Fireworks tournament in July 2002. This would be a great opportunity to play in a tournament with over 100 college coaches in attendance. There will also be an NFCA recruiting camp held in conjunction with this tournament. We will also be looking at other tournaments to attend, possibly on the East Coast, to get the players as much exposure as possible.
Tryouts will be held on Sunday, August 26th at the Park Strip in Anchorage. Please plan to attend the following time slots:
Pitchers & Catchers at 1pm,
Infielders at 1:45,
Outfielders at 2:45.
If you play multiple positions, please plan to attend each time frame.
All participants will bat one time only in one time slot. Be prepared to give your best effort throughout the year. If you have a conflict and are unable to attend but would like to be considered for the team, please contact Dave Higbie, Manager 18U, at 345-0398 before 10pm.
Freeze Takes 2nd in First-Ever State Tournament
The team had an excellent showing in Fairbanks during the state tournament. This was Alaska's inaugural ASA girls fastpitch tournament. The team played very well and had some superb performances. MVPs were selected each game and the following players were recognized: Abby Higbie, Heather Lyons, Megan Cushman, Nicole Smiley, and Topaz Hollingsworth. Check out the stats page to see how the team did individually. The Freeze finished 2nd behind the Northern Impact. The two teams played two nail-biters each finishing as 1-run contests. Pictures should be available soon. The Freeze now moves on to the Western 16As to be played in Turlock, California.
Freeze Returns From Vegas
The Freeze had an exciting trip to Las Vegas and played against some tough A teams. The team went 2-4 during the trip but had two close games and could have easily been 4-2. There were strong performances from every player and the team out hit all but two opponents. The team came back with hard earned experience and immediately put it to use by defeating the Eagle River Icebreakers 2-1 on 6/21/01. Games continue until the state tournament in July. Keep checking back for results.
Watch Out Vegas--A Freeze Is Coming
The Freeze has planned its first major outing of 2001. The team will be participating in the Las Vegas JO Triple Crown World Series Qualifier 16-17 June. They are looking forward to visiting Vegas again and maybe seeing some old friends at Flamingo Fields.
Three Freeze Players make SHS Varsity
Congratulations go to Megan Cushman, Lacy Kralick and Abby Higbie for making Service High School's Varsity team.
Way to go girls!
Freeze to Play 16Us for 2001
It's official. The team will play at 16U this year with a lot of new players. Keep checking back as the roster will be posted soon with some new pictures. The team is already making plans to play locally after the high school season with at least two tournaments "outside".
Freeze Begins Weekly Practice
The Freeze started weekly practices on December 30th. It only took everyone about 5 minutes to get back in the groove. The team is very excited about the upcoming season and is still looking for a few dedicated ball players with advanced skills. The team will travel several times again this year and have their sights set on another Nationals appearance.
Four Freeze Members Make Midnight Sun Volleyball Teams
Heather Lyons, Nicole Smiley, and Topaz Hollingsworth made the Midnight Sun competitive volleyball 14U teams. Megan Cushman made one of the 16U squads. The girls were among a group of over 70 trying out for some 40 spots. All four were elated to make the team and say volleyball helps keep them in shape for the upcoming season.
Coaches Get Ready For 2001
John and Kevin sharpened their skills by hearing from some of the best coaches in the business over January 12 & 13 at the National Sports Clinic held in Portland, Oregon. The two heard lectures and saw demonstrations from Cindy Bristow, head coach Florida Wahoos, Margie Wright, head coach Fresno State, Amy Chellevold, asst coach, Arizona, Kelly Inouye-Perez, asst coach UCLA, and Tory Acheson, head coach Tennessee Tech. They also got to spend time with their home-state ASA Commissioner and JO Commissioner, Patricia Lillian and Claralene Williams. Both enjoyed the clinic and exchanging stories with fellow coaches.
