Welcome to the Alamo Volleyball Association
Alamo Volleyball Association was founded in 1983 to give high school athletes who were interested in playing at the college level an opportunity to excel and to receive exposure for their volleyball skills. Over the years, Alamo has emerged as one of the premier junior volleyball programs in South Texas and is regarded as a model for emerging clubs throughout the state. Along with developing volleyball talent, our program stresses the importance of personal discipline, leadership, organizational skills, and character building. Alamo players participate in USA Volleyball junior competition at the state and national level. This competition has resulted in Alamo Volleyball teams being selected to participate in the USA Volleyball Junior National Championships every year since Alamo was founded. Over 98% of our graduating seniors have gone on to play volleyball at the collegiate level. Alamo develops volleyball players at all levels - whether a player wants to participate in order to improve her chances of playing for her high school team, or if she just wants to play for the love of the game.
PRACTICE TIMES AND LOCATIONS
Practice starts the first week of December. Teams practice twice a week, usually on a Sunday afternoon and one weekday evening for two hours each session. Our practice gym is located at The Factory of Champions, 8227 Broadway.
The practice schedule is posted on our website prior to each month, telling where and when practices will be held for the coming month.
POSITION TRAINING PROGRAM
We will be offering our very successful Position Training Clinics again this season. This involves a group of our elite coaches attending age group practices throughout the season to work with players on their individual positions – setting, hitting, defense, etc.
TOURNAMENT INFORMATION
Tournaments are scheduled approximately twice a month, starting in January. They are usually one-day events held on a Saturday, sometime running all day and into the evening. Most of our tournaments are held in the San Antonio and Austin area, but a few are in Houston and Dallas.
TEAM CLASSIFICATIONS
We have two basic classifications of teams – our Regular teams and our National teams. Regular teams play in tournaments held within the state. Their season runs from the first of December through the Regional Championships that are usually held the first weekend in May.
National teams are nationally competitive teams and travel to tournaments out-of-state at least once during the season. National teams play an extended season that lasts through the USAV Junior National Championships or the AAU National Championships that are held during June each year.
PROGRAM FEES
Our fees cover all expenses of Alamo’s program except for the travel expenses for out of town tournaments. Included are membership fees to USA Volleyball, tournament entry fees, gym rent, coach’s salaries and uniform expense.
National teams pay the same basic fees as regular teams, plus the expenses of their extended season, and the expenses of attending the national tournaments on their schedule.
The fee schedule for the season can be found on this website.
ALAMO COACHES
The main reason Alamo has been so successful over the years is because of our outstanding coaching staff. Our coaches are local high school, middle school, and college coaches, with several elite college players also included. Information about each of our current coaches can be found on this website.
TEAM TRY-OUTS
There are limits to the number of players we can accommodate, so we do have to have a try-out process for selecting teams. During these tryouts players’ volleyball skills and general athletic abilities are assessed. Any Alamo team you are selected for will be a very strong team with a coach committed to individual player development. You will find that Alamo teams consistently finish very high in tournament play.
Exact dates and locations for tryouts can be found on this website.
At the end of each age group’s tryouts a list is posted of players and the teams they have made. Players must come prepared to make a decision to accept an invitation to participate with Alamo at that time.
When selecting our 12, 13 & 14 year-old teams, players will be notified that they made a team in their age group. We will select a core of players for the National teams, leaving several open spots on each of these teams. The remainder of players will practice together for the first two weeks in December, then will be placed on specific teams. Because players in these age groups are generally inexperienced in volleyball, it is very difficult to evaluate players in the time we have available at try-outs. We definitely want to place players on the teams that are best for them and have found that this method works very well for all concerned.
Players who accept our invitation to participate will need to stay after tryouts to fill out USAV forms and turn in their first payment. There are several forms that require parent signatures; so one parent must accompany the player to the last day of tryouts.
Occasionally a player will decide not to participate with our program. In that case, we will contact the next person on the list to offer them a position on a team.
PLAYER AGE RULES
There are some strict USA Volleyball rules concerning age limits. Age groups are defined by the player’s age on September 1. For example, if you are playing on a 14-year-old team this season, you cannot turn 15 before September 1, 2013.
We occasionally get request from players who want to play in an older age group. Our policy is that you need to try out with your age group. Individuals are rarely moved to a higher age group. We feel that it is generally better for a good athlete to stay in their age group and be competitive on a national level than to play in a higher age group and have limited success.
COMMITMENT TO THE ALAMO PROGRAM
Alamo is looking for athletes who are willing to commit fully to its program. Before you decide to try out for Alamo, you must decide if you are willing to make the commitment involved.
We expect all team members to attend every practice and every tournament. We believe that learning to plan and budget your time is one of the benefits of athletic training. The only excused absence from practice or tournaments would be illness or a school sponsored event. Studies and schoolwork certainly come first; but you will know your practice schedule in advance, so we expect players to plan their study and homework time around their practice schedule.
Volleyball is a team sport and like any team effort, the success of the team as a whole depends on the individual members. Your tournament schedule for the year is distributed at the first of the season and your teammates expect you to plan any other extracurricular activities around this competition schedule.
Once you participate with any volleyball organization in our region, you are committed by USA Volleyball to that organization and cannot change clubs during the season, so choose wisely. We hope you will choose Alamo!
