LonestarVolleyball.com "Libero of The Year" - Daniella Villarreal
Written by Scott White, Wednesday, December 26 2012
It was the year of the libero in Texas with a number of outstanding juniors and seniors roaming the back court for the state's top teams.
And while there may be some with bigger stats, anyone who watched Daniella Villarreal at the state's top tournaments or in Garland knows just how important the 5-5 senior was to the Unicorns' run to the state finals.
From a pre-serve crouch in which her chin, at times, almost touched the floor, she always seemed to be in the right place at the right time, tracking down the most vicious blasts with ease.
She finished the season with 724 digs for a 5-dig-per-set average and the numbers were biggest when she was needed most. All you have to do is check out her performances against the state elite to see her impact -- 22 digs against O'Connor, 46 against Westwood, 29 against Clear Lake and Magnolia, 31 against Pearce, 32 against Pearland, 66 against Reagan, 104 in three matches against Smithson Valley. Down the stretch and into the playoffs she was her most impressive.
In the state semifinals she had 34 digs in a five-set win over McKinney Boyd. She followed that with 27, many spectacular point-savers, in the five set loss to Coppell in the finals. For her effort she was named to the state tournament All-Tournament team.
