Best of Texas - 2009 Final Rankings
Written by Scott White
Thursday, 21 May 2009

17s

Much like the 18s, the 17s turned out to be very predictable at the top, but then it's pure turmoil. Amarillo's Young Guns opened the season at #1 and finish there. Although we'd like to have seen them compete at Lone Star with the rest of the top Texas teams, they were impressive in their qualifiers and did nothing to lose their top rank.

The battle for the #2 position was back-and-forth between TAV and Skyline for much of the season but by the end, TAV was a solid #2 and received consideration to unseat the Young Guns at #1.

Positons 3-4-5 were a toss-up. Skyline, Willowbrook and Alamo all beat each other up over the final weeks of the season. Skyline was the most consistent from the start of the season to the end. Alamo is loaded with talent, healthy for the first time all season and as a result they have had the look of a JO medal contender over the past few weeks. Willowbrook, is a good looking team from top to bottom that seemed to figure everything out at Lone Star. So that's the order we're putting them in although they could easily be flip-flopped.

Texas Tornados, a team that seems to have its ups and downs, slides a couple of spots to #6 as does El Paso Wildfire, which stumbled early in Open at Lone Star, then won out, finishing with an impressive sweep of Alamo.

Then the turmoil really begins.

  • Advanced Amarillo knocked off Alamo in the terrific three-set battle at Lone Star, then stumbled against Skyline, TAV and the Tornados.
  • TAV Molten won the club division at Lone Star and came close to winning an Open bid at the PNQ.
  • Premier Mizuno finished the season strong. splitting with Willowbrook, and picked up an Open bid at Northern Lights
  • Brazos Valley also had a strong showing at Lone Star followed by a first place finish in Club at the NEQ.
  • Austin Juniors had an OK showing in Open at the LSC followed by a first place finish at the Lone Star regional tournament.
  • Southwest Asics won Club at Show Me and had a strong Open showing at Lone Star.
  • Then there is Victory, which stumbled at Lone Star but won the North Texas regional tournament.

This was a tough one, but ultimately, when looking back over the final weeks of the season, we went with Southwest Asics, Advanced Amarillo and Dallas Premier.
