Alabama Elite 13U Fare Well in Tennessee Miracle Tourney
TN_Miracle13U1

The Elite 13U Girls learned two things during the Tennessee Miracle Tourney held in Jefferson City, Tennessee the weekend of May 3rd. They can compete with the top teams in the Southeast and they are not going to get any driver's permit anytime soon. The Elite's 1st game at 9:45pm Friday night was a reality check. The Georgia Ice 12U featured four six foot players with one being about 6'3". They are coached by ex-NBA player Antionio Davis. The Elite started slow and had to fight back to cut the Ice lead to five in the second half but couldn't get any closer. Their second game was a mismatch as the Elite blew out the Low County Ballers 49-19. In their third game, the Elite beat (#5 in Nation) Memphis Flight 48-47 although we did not play very well. The Elite got down 10-0 to start the game and committed several turnovers. The Elite failed to advance to the tournament bracket due to a tiebracker. The Memphis Flight went 2-1 and beat the Georgia Ice. The Georgia Ice went 2-1 and beat us, and we went 2-1 and beat the Memphis Flight. The Georgia Ice beat the Georgia Pistols Gold in the finals to win the 13U division of sixteen teams. After the Saturday games were complete, the Elite went to Bennett's Barbeque and then over to The Track for some entertainment. All the players and siblings road GoCarts and had a blast! The fun for the parents suddenly turned into concern when they saw their daughters zigzaging in and out, bumping, and screaming at the other drivers. No permits until they are at least 16!

2008 4th Annual Girls Tip-Off Classic 17U Champions
The Alabama Elite 17U team played four outstanding games to complete a sweep at the 4th Annual Girls Tip-Off Classic held in Suwanee, Georgia the weekend of April 18-20, 2008. The 17U Elite won their 1st game over a very good Central Kentucky Angels team when Mechi McNealey nailed a 18 footer in overtime. In that game, the Elite were down by 12 points with about 10 minutes left in the game when Jessi Smith hit 3 three point baskets to get the Elite into the sudden death overtime period. Central Kentucky went on to beat a huge Georgia Blazers Red team which featured 6'7" and 6'3" post players. The Elite 17U won their second game over the Geogia Hoopstars 47-41. In the third game, the Elite 17U beat the Spartenburg Lady Bucks 48-40. In the finals against the College Park Rim Rockers from Atlanta, Georgia, the Elite came back from 11 down with 3 minutes left in the game to take the game into sudden death overtime. In the overtime, the Elite 17U got the tip and Courtney Thacker scored the winning basket on a power drive to the hoop. The final score was 40-38. It might also be of interest to  note that Alabama Elite's 17U Danielle Vaughn held in check the College Park Rim Rockers featured 6'4" post player. The Rim Rocker's post player is being recruited by several D1 colleges including Maryland, Vanderbilt, Auburn, Arkansas and Georgia. The Alabama Elite 17U team featured in this article, is the Alabama Elite 16U team coached by Glenn McGann plus all Alabama Elite senior '08 signees.

The Alabama Elite club took their girls 13U, 15U, 16U and 17U to the tournament. The 13U team won their first two games including a play-in game against the 14U Georgia Blazers and their first bracket game against the 13U Louisville Select. The 13U lost their 3rd game against the Tennessee Elite and their final game for 3rd place against the Puerto Rico National team. The 15U team lost to the Atlanta Cagers and the LC Ballers before coming back to beat the Tampa Extreme. The 16U team, made up of many underclassman, lost two games in overtime but beat the Georgia Blast by 18 which included Haley Stewart's 30 points (7 threes).

Alabama 13U Elite win Pelham Invitational
08_13UElite_Pelham1
The Alabama 13U Elite team played extremely well over the weekend at the Pelham Invitational held at Pelham High School. The Elite jumped out with two lopsided wins earning them the top seed in Pool "B". The Elite then played the winner and top seed in Pool "C" in the Lady Phoenix from Birmingham. The Lady Phoenix are a very athletic and physical team with height. After a slow start in their third game of the day, the Elite went on to win the chance to play in the finals by beating the Lady Phoenix with a final score of 47-25. The finals were held on Sunday at 1:00 between the Alabama Elite and the Pelham Pride, winner of Pool "A". The Pride kept the final game close with some timely three pointers but the Elite came out with a press in the fourth period to close the deal with a 33-23 win.

11U Girls, Runner-Ups in 2008 Run & Gun Shootout
RunandGunShootout_RunnerUp2b
The 11U girls squared off against a very talented Tennessee Team Pride in the Championship game of the 2008 Run & Gun Shootout hosted by Middle TN Basketball Showcases. Nadia Stewart would lead the way for Alabama Elite as she caused match up problems for Team Pride; she scored 8 of her 13 in the first half. Defensively, Alabama Elite stayed strong the entire game; allowing only 3 points for Team Pride's best player, Kyndall, in the first half. The second half would see several score lead changes before Team Pride sank a final 3-point bucket with 20+ seconds remaining.  Meredith Lovelady would quickly answer back with a 3-pointer of her own to tie the game at 32.  Team Pride held one final possession in the game with 9.2 seconds remaining but would be denied by the Alabama Elite defense. Overtime would prove costly however as Team Pride went on a 4 point scoring run.  With the clock winding down Alabama Elite failed to convert several shot attempts and would eventually fall to a score of 36 - 32. Coach Q is extremely proud and impressed with the 11U team as they continue to improve both individually and as a team.  The 11U girls are off this coming weekend for Easter, but they will be in the swing of things at the end of March as they travel to Pelham, Alabama for the 2008 Pelham Pride March Tip-off.

Elite's Fann Leads All Scorers with 24 Points, while Elite's Haugtvedt with 18 points off the bench

ASHEVILLE, NC— When it comes to Big South Tournament action, junior Ashley Fann seems to rise to the occasion and Friday night was no different as she scored 24 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead third-seeded Winthrop to a 76-41 victory over sixth-seeded Charleston Southern in the first round of the Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Tournament. With the win, the Eagles earn their school record 20th victory and are now 20-11 on the season. They are the record, third Big South team to reach 20 wins this season. Winthrop also earned the right to meet No. 2-seed Radford in Saturday’s semifinal round. The contest is slated to begin at 8:30 p.m. at the Justice Center and will be televised by SportSouth. The top four seeds all reached the semifinals for the fifth time in Conference history. Fann, who has made the Big South All-Tournament Team the past two seasons without making the championship game in either year, scored 12 points in each half. It was her second straight tournament game she reached 20 or more points. “The most impressive thing about tonight’s game was that it was truly a team effort,” said head coach Bud Childers, who’s Eagles will be making their third straight semi-final appearance. “We played everyone we had, and they came out with great energy.” In addition to Fann’s double-double, Ashley Haugtvedt came up one point shy of tying her career-best with 18 points off the bench and Tiffany Rodd added 14 points. Yvonne van Daalen finished with five points and nine assists to just two turnovers. The Eagles came out on fire and never let down as they shot 56 percent from the floor in the first half to build a 41-20 half time advantage. The Eagles held Charleston Southern (8-22) to just 28 percent to build its first half lead and 29 percent for the game. Winthrop opened the contest with a 10-1 lead, as it took the Lady Buccaneers more than five and a half minutes to record their first made field goal. Charleston Southern guard Tolbert countered with back-to-back hoops, narrowing the gap to 10-5, 13:55 before the intermission. That was as close as the Lady Buccaneers would get during the opening 20 minutes of play, though. The Eagles gradually built their lead for the remainder of the half, shooting 56.3 percent (18-for-32) from the field. Their largest advantage of the opening 20 minutes was the one they took into the locker room, 41-20. The 35-point margin of victory was a school record for a Big South Tournament game and regular season league game. Coming into the game, Winthrop had lost two straight that included a 63-60 home loss to UNC Asheville in the regular season finale. “We learned a valuable lesson last week against Asheville,” said Childers. “We realized you have to be ready to play every game. As a result, we came out tonight with great purpose. Our team shared the basketball and rebounded aggressively. Defensively, it seemed like we were all over the court. That was probably one of the best games we’ve played all season.” This was the fourth straight win over Charleston Southern and then sixth in the last seven meetings, but it was the Eagles first ever in post season play.

Shelton State wins third straight state title

MUSCLE SHOALS | Shelton State coach Madonna Thompson called Sunday’s state championship win against Northwest-Shoals the “sweetest” of the Bucs’ three straight crowns. Rallying from a nine-point deficit with little more than seven minutes to play for a 56-50 victory to clinch another trip to the national junior college tournament will make for a memorable afternoon. “I honestly think so, just because of the way the game was played,” Thompson said when asked if it was the best of the three championship wins. “We played so bad and missed so many shots. We didn’t have anything fall, and then they fell at the right time.” For Northwest-Shoals coach Kristy Ward, Sunday’s loss was one of the toughest in her 13-year career. “It’s probably the worst,” she said. “We knew we had the talent to win it. We led for 35 minutes and for most of the game we did everything right. That’s why this is the hardest.” Northwest-Shoals (24-9) led from the 13-minute mark of the first half until tournament MVP Ayla Guzzardo buried a 3-pointer from the right wing to erase what had been a nine-point Shoals lead with 7:28 to play. It gave the Bucs a 47-46 advantabge with 3:20 remaining. Brandi Burris answered with a pull-up jumper seconds later, but that was the last basket for the Patriots until Kendra Jackson scored with five seconds remaining. Shelton State (28-4), which shot only 30 percent (18-of-60), ended the game on a 19-4 run. The run included all three of the Bucs’ second-half 3-pointers. Guzzardo, who scored eight points, had two of them.

Alabame Elite 13U comeback to win opening Tourney!
Team_Timeout1
The Alabama Elite Girls 13U team came back to avenge a loss to Tennessee D1 Power team from Nashville in the Finals of the season's first tournament. The Elite looked a little unsure of themselves in the season opener in an Overtime loss to D Tennessee D1 Power. However, the Elite got on track and ran off three straight wins. Two of the wins came against Pelham Pride with scores of 46-27 and 55-29. The Elite beat the Mystics 40-19 in the small gym in Ardmore before playing for the championship at the Monrovia Community Center. In the final game, the Elite started strong against D1 Power but fell behind by eight after a successful three point shot from D1 Power. The Elite turn up the defense in the second half and captured the lead by one with less than 30 seconds remaining. After getting a turnover on the next possession, the Elite canned both ends of a one-and-one stretching the lead to three. With less than 10 seconds, D1 Power attempted to get off a three point attempt but the pass was picked off by the Elite.

Prairie View, Tex. - Jenna Collier nailed five three-point field goals Saturday, setting a career high with 15 points, but it was the only highlight for Alabama A&M in an 89-58 loss at Prairie View. The Bulldogs built an early six-point lead, 24-18, however the Panthers ran off an 11-0 run and never looked back. Ashleonte' Samuel scored 12 points for A&M.

Ashley Thornton on Cover of Memphis Media Guide
Despite being undersized, Thornton used her work ethic and footwork to work around bigger players inside. She was among the top five rebounders in Conference USA last year, and after going up against post players from ranked teams like Louisville and Georgia, continued to be a dominant force inside on the glass. With more help inside this year, Thornton should have more opportunities to work while facing the basket instead of being forced to play with her back to the board while working against bigger post players.

Late basket sinks Lady Chargers in overtime

Junior guard Ashley Boykin exploded for 27 points
and grabbed 10 rebounds
Livingston - Junior guard Ashley Boykin (Haleyville) exploded for 27 points and grabbed 10 rebounds against West Alabama on Saturday. But, it was all ruined by Ashton Washington's bucket with seven seconds left in overtime, lifting the Lady Tigers to a 76-74 win over UAH in the Gulf South Conference opener for both teams. Boykin, oft-injured during the pre-conference schedule, had her best game as a Lady Charger, hitting 9-of-21 fieldgoals and coming two 3-pointers short of the UAH record with seven. Three other Lady Chargers scored in double-figures. Forward Kristen Banes (Ashland City, Tenn.) tallied 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting and she knocked down all five of her freethrow attempts. She also had seven rebounds. Guard Tonya McKinney (Miami, Fla.) nearly had a triple-double, scoring 13 points, passing out 11 assists and grabbing nine rebounds. Senior guard Julie Richardson (Fayetteville, Tenn.) contributed 10 points and five rebounds. UAH (7-7, 0-1 in GSC) had one of its best days shooting of the season, hitting over 41 percent (24-of-58) from the field with 11 three-pointers. However, UWA (5-10, 1-0) stayed in the game from the freethrow line, making 23-of-35 attempts. The Lady Chargers thoroughly dominated in the first half, leading by as much as 25 points (39-14) and holding a 39-19 advantage at halftime. However, the momentum flipped to the home team in the second half, as the Lady Tigers outscored UAH 46-26. UAH had its biggest lead of the game after a jumper by McKinney gave the Lady Chargers a 49-23 lead with 15:52 left. The Lady Chargers led 55-35 when UWA went on a 30-10 run to tie the game at 65-all. Jessica Thompson capped the rally with eight seconds left with a pair of freethrows. UAH had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a turnover snuffed out the threat. After UWA scored the first two points of overtime, UAH answered with five straight to take a 70-67 lead. UWA tied the game with 38 seconds left on a freethrow by Jenni Thomley. After UAH failed on its attempt to reclaim the lead on the next possession, Washington hit the game-winner. The Lady Chargers had a chance to tie, but Boykins jumpers was no good as time expired.
