CHARLESTON, S.C. -– Back-to-back three’s from Brooke Hand and Laura Hall led the Chattanooga women’s basketball team past Western Carolina 84-66 Saturday afternoon at the North Charleston Coliseum to claim back-to-back Southern Conference tournament titles. "Our confidence this year is the strongest it's ever been," Lady Mocs' head coach Wes Moore said. "I think Western is tough enough to get considerations (from the NCAA), but it's also tough being a Mid-Major." With 5:45 to play in the game, WCU’s Lauren Powell sank a 3-pointer to knot the game up for the sixth time in the closely played game at 62-62. Hand, standing well behind the line, hit her 87th 3-pointer of the season to put Chattanooga out front for good 65-62 and tie the league mark for treys in a season. Hall followed with her third 3-pointer of the game and the Lady Mocs never looked back. “I felt bad that I gave up a 3-pointer to her (Powell),” Hand said. “I felt like I had to get one back.” Chattanooga went on a 17-0 run and outscored Western 22-4 over the final minutes of the game to claim its 11th SoCon tournament title since 1984. Jenaya Wade-Fray
GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Freshman Jenaya Wade-Fray scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Chattanooga women’s basketball team to an 83-66 Southern Conference win over UNC Greensboro Monday night at Fleming Gymnasium. The loss drops the Spartans to 14-8 overall and 7-4 in league action. The win moves the Lady Mocs to 16-6 on the year and 9-2 in SoCon play. UTC remains locked in a tie for first place with Western Carolina who defeated Elon 77-66 today in Cullowhee, N.C. Davidson had the day off. “I told this team they just amaze me,” Lady Mocs head coach Wes Moore said. “This was a great win for us. We shot the lights out of the ball tonight. What can you say about Jenaya [Wade-Fray]? She did it against Davidson too and these are definitely our two biggest games.” Wade-Fray came off the bench hitting a career-high 6-for-6 from beyond the arc and was 8-of-9 from the floor. Alex Anderson just missed a double-double with 23 points and nine boards. She dished out five assists on the night and was 8-for-13 from the field. After leading by a narrow 39-35 margin at halftime, the Lady Mocs pushed its lead to as much as 18 twice in the second half. Both teams combined for five free throws to start the latter period over the first 4:34. While Chattanooga never relinquished its lead, the Spartans pulled to within two at 49-47 at the 11:07 mark on a jumper by Irene Otamiri who had 14 points on the night. Two 3-pointers from Ogan coupled with a three-point play from Amy Mohr pushed the Lady Mocs lead to 58-49. Kristen Boone hit a jumper to cut the lead to 58-51 with 8:23 play, but an 11-0 run by the Lady Mocs put UTC up by a near-insurmountable 69-51 with 5:50 to play. “At halftime I told Erin [Ogan] and Kristen Spann they’re doubling on Alex [Anderson] so knock ‘em down. They can both bury the three,” Moore said. “Amy Mohr did a great job as well. She did a good job of handling the ball and running the team against probably the league’s toughest guard in Kristen Boone.” Greensboro would only get as close as 10 for the remainder of the game, but a Wade-Fray bomb sparked a 10-2 run to push the lead back to 18 with 32 seconds remaining. The Lady Mocs converted 17 Spartan turnovers into 22 points and outrebounded UNCG 35-34. Chattanooga’s bench outscored Greensboro 45-15.

McKinney's Free Throw Hands JSU 69-68 Victory
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Sophomore guard LaTonya McKinney sank her third and final free throw with four seconds remaining Saturday night to lift Jacksonville State (5-12, 2-6 OVC) over Tennessee State 69-68... Slaughter led the Gamecocks in scoring with 20 points, eclipsing the 20-point mark for the third time this season. She also had six rebounds. Sophomore Ashley Boykin, who was instrumental in a pair of key JSU runs finished with 17 points on a 5-of-6 shooting performance from behind the 3-point line. Efezokhae finished with 11 points and six rebounds and Ashley Clay hauled in seven big rebounds. Both teams got out to a slow start. A combined nine points were scored in the game’s first five minutes. But the Gamecocks took control of the game following the first media timeout. Sparked by consecutive 3-pointers from Eren McMichael and Ashley Boykin, JSU went on a 17-6 run and took an 21-11 lead with 8:27 remaining in the half... In the second half, TSU took its largest lead of the game at 43-39 with 14:41 remaining. But the lead quickly evaporated after Ashley Boykin hit treys on three consecutive trips down the floor and helped spark the Gamecocks to a 15-4 run and a seven point lead. JSU’s defense limited the Lady Tigers to just 39 percent shooting the game, thanks in large part to TSU’s ability to connect on just 26 percent of its shots in the first half. The Lady Tigers were an unconscious 54 percent in the second half, but were ust 2-of-9 from the free throw line. The Gamecocks countered by shooting 50 percent from the field itself in the second half, including four crucial 3-point buckets...(Taken from the Official Internet Home of the Jacksonville State University Gamecocks)

Anytime you can beat an ACC team, it’s a good win,” Lady Mocs head coach Wes Moore said. “I understand that Clemson is going through rebuilding, but a win like this means a lot to our kids and our program.” Anderson put together an eight point run at the start of the game to give the Lady Mocs a 10-8 lead then closed out the contest scoring 10 of Chattanooga’s last 12 points in the second half. Brooke Hand balanced Anderson’s inside game, sinking a career-high seven 3-pointers. After missing her first four attempts, the next one tied the game at 24-24. She followed that with another to give UTC (2-1) a 27-24 lead with 4:05 to play in the first half. Hand sank five in the second half for 21 points, shooting 7-of-14 on the night. “I’m concerned when we only have two people in double figures,” Moore said. “That’s not the Chattanooga way. We’ve been very balanced in the past. We have some other kids who can step up.” Laura Hall had a pair of crucial 3-pointers and scored eight points on the night with a team-high four assists. Jenaya Wade-Fray grabbed seven boards, scoring five points while Kristen Spann, making her first start this season, tossed in seven points and had three boards.

JSU Hoops Stays Unbeaten
JACKSONVILLE – The Jacksonville State University women’s basketball team won its third consecutive game to start the season Wednesday night with an 84-77 victory over Georgia Southern (1-1) at Pete Mathews Coliseum. JSU’s 3-0 start is its best start since the 1989-90 season and its first 3-0 start since joining Division I in 1995-96. For the second straight game, Ashley Boykin led the way for the Gamecocks. Boykin finished the game with 27 points; just two points shy of a career-high, while shooting 64 percent from the field (9 of 14). Over her last two games, Boykin is averaging 22.5 points per game. “I hit a couple of shots early and that helped with my confidence a little bit,” Boykin said. “Luckily, it carried over into the second half. My teammates kept driving and kicking it back out. They were able to find me in some good spots and I knocked the shots down.” But Boykin wasn’t the only Gamecock to have a big night. Sophomore LaTonya McKinney finished with a career-high 25 points, with six assists and six rebounds. Junior guard Courtney Slaughter chipped in 14 points to go along with nine rebounds and four assists. McKinney and Slaughter have scored in double-digits in all three of JSU’s victories this season... JSU will look to continue its winning streak on Friday as it takes to the road to play Southern Miss. The game will be broadcast on the JSU Sports Network and can be heard locally on WLJS FM 91.9.

Late Basket Lifts JSU to Victory
JACKSONVILLE – Ashley Boykin buried a 3-pointer with 17 seconds remaining Monday night to lift the Jacksonville State University women’s basketball team to a 74-68 win over Birmingham-Southern. With the game tied at 68-68 and just three seconds remaining on the shot clock, Boykin gathered an inbounds pass from Cobie Carlisle at the top of the key, stepped around a BSC defender, drew contact and drained the game-winning shot. Boykin completed the four-point play at the free-throw line. “I came off a down screen and (BSC) switched defenders so I had someone in my face,” Boykin said. “I knew I had to do something with it. I took one dribble to the right and just let it fly and luckily it went in.” Boykin led the JSU attack on the night with a team-high 18 points and shot lights-out from the field going 5-for-6 from 3-point land and 6-of-9 overall. As a team the Gamecocks shot and even 50 percent from the field on the evening. Boykin’s 3-pointer as time wound down is the second time in two games that JSU has hit a 3-point basket in the final 20 seconds to win or tie the game. Monday’s late win improves JSU to 2-0 for the first time since joining Division I in the 1995-96 season...(Taken from www.collegesportingnews.news)

Brooke Hand tied her career-high
with six-three pointers
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Lady Mocs set a 3-point record against Tennessee Sunday night at Thompson-Boling Arena, but couldn’t pull it out falling 102-72 in the season-opener for the No. 5-ranked Lady Vols. Brooke Hand led the Lady Mocs (1-1) in scoring with 20 points, knocking down a career-high tying six 3-pointers. She had nearly half as the Lady Mocs hit 13 on the night, the most ever made against Tennessee. “It starts with Brooke,” Lady Mocs head coach Wes Moore said. “She’s phenomenal from outside the line. We ended up with several people hitting 3’s for us and that’s good news. Hopefully that will open up the inside for us.” Hand was 7-of-14 from the floor and 6-for-13 from beyond the arc. Jenaya Wade-Fray had two, including the one that broke the record and Laura Hall, who dished out a game-high six assists, had a pair of treys as well. The Lady Mocs were in the game early, never letting the Lady Vols get more than nine points ahead, but Tennessee (1-0) opened it up with a 17-0 run to take a 26-point lead at the 5:22 mark of the half. Tennessee led by as much as 31 in the opening stanza, carrying a 59-31 lead into the break. In the second half, Tennessee jumped on the Lady Mocs early forcing four straight turnovers six points, spreading its lead to 34 before Hall sank a 3-pointer. Alex Anderson, in foul trouble early, was whistled for a pair in the space of 30 seconds, less than two minutes into the half to foul out. “Alex is a competitor and a winner,” Moore said. “She was probably frustrated with the situation tonight and we had some let downs in other positions. She found herself as the one between them and the bucket and stuck her head in there getting into trouble.” At 15:57 of the second half, Tennessee’s Candace Parker brought the house down, recording the first dunk by a women’s player at Thompson-Boling Arena. She forced a turnover in the back court and charged the bucket for the slam. It was her third career. She had two against Army in the opening round of the NCAA tournament last year. Six Lady Vols scored in double digits led by Alexis Hornbuckle’s 19. She was 6-for-9 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and went 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. Parker had 15 and Alberta Auguste scored 13 for UT. Shannon Bobbitt had a pair of 3-pointers, scoring 12 on the night while Dominique Redding and Sidney Spencer had 11 and 10 respectively. The Lady Mocs outrebounded Tennessee 37-27, pulling down 16 offensive boards. Kristen Spann had a game-high eight rebounds, the most in her career. Erin Ogan, Wade-Fray and Shanara Hollinquest each had five in the game. Alex Fuller had a team-high five for the Volunteers and Hornbuckle had four. Tennessee outscored UTC 38-14 in the paint and had 40 points off 26 Chattanooga turnovers. Chattanooga had 14 second chance points to UT’s 11 and scored 29 off the bench. “I’m proud of our kids,” Moore said. “We talked at halftime about not giving up. I think our kids represented Chattanooga well. We really appreciate the fans whocame here today.” The Lady Mocs will stay on the road to take on Clemson on Thursday. The game will tip off at 7 p.m. Call 266-MOCS for ticket information.

Ashley Fann Leads Winthrop With 14 Points; Is Named To All-Classic Team
LOUISVILLE, KY—Dayton jumped off to a quick 6-2 lead and never trailed as the Flyers defeated Winthrop’s Lady Eagles 55-42 Sunday night on the final day of the University of Louisville Cardinal Classic. Winthrop finished third in the four-team tournament. Winthrop (1-2) will now prepare for its next game against Binghamton in the first round of the 2006 Florida Atlantic Classic this Friday night in Boca Raton. Just as they did in Saturday’s loss to Louisville, the Lady Eagles got off to a slow start due to poor shooting and found themselves down 9-2 in the opening three minutes. Winthrop again failed to reach the 30 percent accuracy mark as they finished the night shooting 29.2 percent (14-48), but sophomore Ashley Fann kept the Lady Eagles to within striking distance at halftime as she converted 8 of 10 free throws to keep Dayton’s lead at 28-20 at intermission. Fann finished the night with a team-high 14 points and was selected on the All-Classic Team. Dayton (2-1), which finished second in the classic, never put the game away until the final six minutes when it took its first double-digit lead of the game at 11 (46-35) on a bucket by Nikki Oakland. A 3-pointer from Tiffany Rodd cut the deficit back to eight at 46-38 with 4:21 left, but that would be as close as the Lady Eagles could get. A three-point play by Brittany Holterman, the game’s leading scorer with 15 points, and a free throw from Oakland gave the Flyers their largest lead of the game at 52-38 with just 2:41 left to play. Despite shooting just 20 percent from the floor in the first half (5 for 25), Winthrop still felt it had a shot at Dayton as the second half started. Franchesca Davenport drew Winthrop to within five with an early 3-pointer and following a UD basket. Fann scored inside to pull the Lady Eagles to within five again at 30-25. But five points would be as close as Winthrop could get the remainder of the game. Winthrop last trailed by five at 34-29 on a jumper from Rodd. “You have to give credit to Dayton,” said Winthrop head coach Bud Childers. “They were very physical with us tonight.” In regard to the poor shooting performance, Childers said his team “had a lot of good looks” but the physical pressure from Dayton gave his young team a lot of trouble. “We just didn’t answer the call like I would’ve liked. Dayton really handed it to us physically,” he said. “When you don’t make shots, that just magnifies everything else,” said Childers, “and with a young team like ours that really becomes a problem. All of our players are capable of making shots, but tonight it just wasn’t there.” While the Lady Eagle coach was concerned with his team’s offensive performance, he was pleased with the defensive effort. “Defensively, 55 points and 37 percent shooting, I’ll take that every night, but we’ve just got to make more shots,” he said. In addition to Fann’s 14 points, Rodd was also in double figures with 12 and she led Winthrop in rebounding with eight. Oakland had a double-double for Dayton as she scored 10 points and grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to lead her team to a 38-32 advantage on the boards.

Memphis' Ashley Thornton
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - For the second time in as many nights, an early first half deficit was too much for the young Lady Tiger basketball team (0-2) to overcome, but not before Memphis showed its scoring ability and turned up some defensive pressure of their own. The Dayton Flyers were true to their nickname to start the game, using pressure to force Memphis in to five turnovers in its first six possessions. Lady Tiger head coach Blair Savage-Lansden called her first time out at the 19:16 mark in the first, trying to get her young team, which featured three newcomers starting the game, settled down. Memphis settled down a bit when senior center Megan Gooch put in her first points of the game with a lay-up, but Memphis had no answer for the slashing Flyer guards until Savage kept subbing in different line-ups and hit on the combination of Ashley Thornton and Aroha Jennings teamed with freshmen Hope Adams, Adria Phillips and Se'erra Fantroy. That combination of players turned up the defensive pressure and sparked a 14-0 Memphis run that cut the halftime deficit to 54-35. "I thought that young line-up that we went with late in the first half did some great work," Savage said. "Hope Adams goes in and is always a coachable kid and Ashley Thornton had played at such a high intensity level the entire game, that bunch of players really fed off that emotion and responded and sparked our run there to end the first half." By the late first half, Memphis was dictating the tempo, slowing down the Flyer guards and finally shutting down the tosses to the outside wings off a screen to force Dayton deeper in to their offense and more turnovers. At the half, Thornton already had a double-double in the books for Memphis, with 15 points and 10 rebounds, finishing the night with a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds for the night as Dayton adjusted to her spark during the half, employing double and triple teams to slow her down. But the 19 first half turnovers for Memphis gave Dayton enough of a cushion to weather foul trouble, as both Kelly Keil and Amber Peterink fouled out of the game. Jennifer Strong slashed her way to a team-high 19 points for Dayton, while Ashley Armstrong hit 16 points. The Flyers shot 57.1 percent from the floor, negating a 47-29 Lady Tiger rebounding advantage. In addition to Thornton's 21 points, junior Aroha Jennings added 13 points, while freshmen Hope Adams, Robin Jones, and Adria Phillips all scored their first collegiate points in the Dayton game. Freshman Se'erra Fantroy added four assists and five rebounds in 24 minutes of play while battling the physical Flyer guards.

LOUISVILLE, KY— After falling behind 22-9 in the first 10 minutes of the game, Winthrop struggled to make up ground as they went on to fall to Louisville 69-45 in the Cardinal Classic. One night after opening a large margin on the opponent, the Lady Eagles fell victim to the same defensive pressure it dealt in Friday’s win over Memphis. Winthrop (1-1) only managed to score 14 points in the opening period and committed 13 turnovers which led to 19 points for the Cardinals, who move to 2-0 on the season. “I think you saw a group of players tonight that were a little bit uncomfortable in this environment in the first half. The crowd was pretty intense,” head coach Bud Childers said. “Louisville played their game and we fell prey to a few things were doing. We missed a few shots early and they got a few easy ones on us.” The game was a tale of two halves. Trailing 39-14 at the half, Winthrop refused to let the game go and showed signs of persistence in the second half and came out on top 31-30 in the period. Ashley Fann led the Lady Eagles with nine points and five rebounds while Yvonne van Daalen added five points and four rebounds in limited action. Van Daalen found herself in foul trouble and yielded the point guard position to Kathi Ryska, who played well after being forced into action. “We didn’t look very comfortable offensively and that’s what happens when you have young kids,” Childers said of his Lady Eagles’, who is the youngest team in the country. “You have to credit Louisville. Tom (Collen) has some outstanding athletes and tip your hat to them.” Childers gave his freshmen some valuable experience down the stretch and at several times in the second half he had five freshmen on the floor at a time. “I like the way our freshmen played the last six minutes of the game,” he said. “They were running our stuff and we’ll grow from this, we’ll learn from this.” Louisville placed three players in double figures and were led by Angel McCoughtry with 14 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Yuliya Tokova recorded a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds while Brandi Radde added 12 points on 4-of-10 from behind the arc...(Taken from www.winthropeagles.com)

Alabama State's Essence Butler
Alabama State University basketball fans got a sneak peek into the future Tuesday night as the Lady Hornets hosted the West Georgia Wolves in an exhibition game kicking off the 2006-07 season. Newcomers Essence Butler, Assunta Fulgham and Jasmon Hazley combined for 46 points as ASU outlasted WGU in overtime 55-45. The Lady Hornets started slowly and found themselves in a 15-5 hole after the first 10 minutes. Slowly but surely the ASU women settled in and whittled the lead to 21-15 at the half. After firing up jump shots and shooting only 19 percent in the first half, the Lady Hornets started going inside and discovered an inside scoring option in 6-2 freshman Assunta Fulgham, who battled her way to a 16-point, seven-rebound debut. The Lady Wolves began racking up fouls, allowing the Lady Hornets a huge advantage from the free-throw line. ASU went 29-42 from the charity stripe while WGU manage only 10-15. Essence Butler (16 points) and Jazmon Hazley (10 points, three assists) also played big roles in the ASU coming-out party. Valeisa Crenshaw had 11 points for the Wolves. Rita Grayson and Alexis Pace each chipped in eight.

Fann Pulls Down Double-Double
ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop placed three players in double figures and broke open a tight game in the final 10 minutes against Radford to claim a 55-44 victory Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Advanced Auto Parts Women’s Basketball Championship. The Lady Eagles advance to Friday night’s semifinals in Lynchburg, Virginia against top-seeded Liberty at 6 p.m. Winthrop (14-14), the No. 4-seed, outscored No. 5 seed Radford 19-10 in the final 10:13 of the game to capture its first conference tournament win since 2002 and become the winningest team in school history since becoming a NCAA Div. I member in 1986. Ashley Fann, the Big South Freshman of the Year, scored a game-high 14 points to lead the Lady Eagles while Ashley Carey scored 12 and Iva Milevoj added 10. Radford (14-14) was led in scoring by Serena White with 12 points and Johnette Walker with 10. The Lady Eagles took advantage of a slow start by the Highlanders to jump out to a 15-3 lead in the opening 8:28 of the game as five different players got into the scoring column. Fann and Ashley Carey had five each during the early spurt. Radford finally found its shooting touch on back-to-back 3-pointers by White and Tameisha Carter to trim the deficit to six at 15-9 with 10:02 left in the half, but Winthrop’s Carey drilled back-to-back treys to put the Lady Eagles up by double digits again at 21-11 at the 6:48 mark. Radford refused to go away and outscored Winthrop 10-2 in the final 5:39. White scored back-to-back 3-pointers and Sarah Stephens scored on two inside baskets to pull the Highlanders to within two points at intermission. Winthrop never gave up the lead in the second half, but Radford did manage to tie the game twice and keep the game close until Winthrop made its final run. The Lady Eagles held Radford scoreless for nine minutes, outscoring the Highlanders 10-0 to take a commanding 48-34 lead on Milevoj’s free throw with 1:06 left in the contest. Winthrop’s defense held Radford to 26.8 percent field goal shooting (15-56) and outrebounded the Highlanders 45-37. The Lady Eagles did not shoot the ball particularly well either (35.2 percent on 19-54), but outscored RU 12-5 on second chance points.

Winthrop Freshman Ashley Fann Quotes:
“I was very nervous. I had a teammate tell me that I missed nine layups, which is not good news, but I plan on correcting that. It was exciting. Coach told me before the game to enjoy it, and that’s what I did. My role tonight was to motivate my team, and I had as exciting a time doing that as winning. It was exciting to get the meaning of tournament play, and I really can’t express how it feels.

Brooke Hand (R) nailed 4 threes in Conference Championship game!
NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The Chattanooga Lady Mocs settled for a berth in the Women's National Invitation Tournament last year. Not this time around. This time they did one better. Tiffani Roberson scored 20 points and Chattanooga beat North Carolina-Greensboro 91-79 Sunday night in the Southern Conference tournament title game, sending the Lady Mocs to the NCAA tournament with the nation's longest winning streak. ``There was a lot of pressure after what happened a year ago and after going undefeated in the conference,'' Chattanooga coach Wes Moore said. ``It was a good way to finish it off.'' Chattanooga (27-3), which has won 26 straight games, made its first seven 3-pointers and led 49-35 at the half. The Lady Mocs, the tournament's top seed and averaging eight 3-pointers a game, went 12-of-25 from behind the arc. Chattanooga, which swept the conference season at 16-0, got a scare in Saturday's semifinals, slipping by fifth-seeded Western Carolina 77-73. The Lady Mocs led by as many as 20 in the first half Sunday, but the Lady Spartans did not go away either. Led by Irene Otamiri's 20 points, Greensboro closed to within three points with just over 4 minutes left. But they couldn't get any closer. ``We knew eventually they would make a run,'' Roberson said. ``It was up to us to contain them and keep our composure because we knew we were going to make a run too.'' The Lady Mocs finished with 30 points in the paint and shot 53 percent from the field. Greensboro coach Lynne Agee said the Lady Spartans didn't come out with the same intensity as Chattanooga. ``We were in deep trouble. The first seven 3's were probably the ball game,'' she said. Roberson was named the most outstanding player of the tournament. Alex Anderson added 16 points for the Lady Mocs while Brooke Hand had 15, including four 3-pointers. Kristen Boone had 17 points for Greensboro and KaLeah Latham added 15. ``We knew we had to stay out on their shooters and we didn't do a very good job of that,'' Boone said. Chattanooga improved to 10-0 in the Southern Conference tournament championship game. The Lady Mocs defeated North Carolina-Greensboro three times this season. Greensboro's wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals were the school's first wins in the Southern Conference tournament in four years. Chattanooga's longest winning streak was 27 games in the 2003-04 season...(Taken from the USA Today)

A Fann of the game
Giving up pompoms for basketballs easy for freshman standout
By Earl Gault The Herald, (Published January 27‚ 2006)
As a youngster in her hometown of Hazel Green, Ala., Ashley Fann really wanted to play basketball. But at 6 years old, she was too young. So Fann found an alternative, or at least she thought she did -- cheerleading. "Big mistake," Fann's mother, Teresa Smith, said, laughing. "She was a cheerleader who was watching the basketball game. It was like, 'Ashley, you need to cheer.' Of course, she didn't want to. 'I want to play.'" The cheerleading experience is etched in her brain, from the nickname of the boys team, the Chiefs, to the color of the uniforms, blue. "I still remember it to this day," Fann said. "I remember sitting on the bleachers and I had the shoes on with the little pompom things. (The Chiefs) didn't win a game. I wouldn't cheer. I would just watch in awe. And that's why I decided I wanted to play basketball. Those poor boys couldn't win a game." Smith and Fann's father, Tom Fann, were sticklers for one thing -- if you start something, you complete it. Fann was told that if she finished the cheerleading stint she'd never have to do it again. "And she never did," Smith said. Cheerleading's loss has definitely been basketball's gain, especially at Winthrop, where Fann, a freshman starter, has helped the Lady Eagles to a 9-8 record, including a surprising 3-1 start in the Big South Conference. They won their first two BSC games this year, something that had never been accomplished, and put together a five-game winning streak, the longest since 2001-02. After passing on the pom-poms, Fann went on to a star-studded career at Hazel Green High School, scoring 1,894 points, 1,407 rebounds, 313 assists and 106 blocked shots. The 5-foot-11 Fann was a first-team Class AAAAAA all-state pick three straight years. "She started for me as a ninth-grader," veteran Hazel Green High School coach Ron King said. "She's kind of one of those once-in-a-lifetime players. You really know that she's a great player. Not only as a player, she's a leader at practice, games and then when you lose her, you find out how much she did mean to you." King met Fann while teaching at a middle school. Fann, tall for her age, was in the second or third grade. "She got out of the car one morning," King recalled, "and I said, 'Girl, you're going to be a good basketball player, aren't you?' She said, 'Yes, sir.' From day one it was 'Yes, sir, and no, sir." Fann had always wanted to play Division I basketball, but no coach came to Hazel Green, near Huntsville, knocking on her door with a scholarship in hand. "This (Winthrop) is really the only school that gave me the opportunity," Fann said. "I've still got a long way to go as a player. But it comes with time." Winthrop coach Bud Childers has to thank Randy Milligan, one of his former graduate student assistants at Murray State and Louisville, for alerting him to the cheerleader turned jump shooter. Milligan lives in Hazel Green and knew about Fann. He telephoned Childers in the latter part of 2004 and offered a scouting report on Fann and teammate, center Ashley Haugtvedt, who is also a freshman at Winthrop. "Randy has recommended a couple of kids to me and he's never been wrong," Childers said. "So I got a couple of game tapes from coach King. I liked what I saw so I drove down there and watched them play in the third round of the playoffs. Boy, I just liked her and I liked Ashley H too. Fann was versatile and you could see the passion she played with. "She came up here a couple of weeks later on her visit and you could just tell this kid was going to be a leader. Not only was she very skilled but you could tell she had a presence about her. I just felt like that was almost like icing on top of the cake right there." Other Division I schools probably failed to recruit her because she is considered a "tweener," not big enough to play the post and perhaps a step slow to be a guard. "Exactly," Childers said. "I've talked to 10 coaches that said, 'Boy, I just didn't see what you saw in that kid.' There were a lot of fence-sitters. She's 5-11 1/2. She played kind of the way we're using her right now, little bit at the post, little bit at forward. She's not going to win any road races. She's not going to win the high jump. She could barely jump over the Rock Hill phone book. "But, she's a ballplayer." Childers grew up in Indiana and played high school ball against Larry Bird, so he understands how much jumping means sometimes. "He couldn't jump either and he did all right for himself," Childers said. "Fann kind of has a little bit of that game." Fann and fellow freshman Tiffany Rodd lead the scoring for the Lady Eagles at 12.2 points a game. Fann is averaging 7.1 rebounds a game, second on the team. She's been named Big South Conference freshman of the week three times. Despite what he saw. Childers says she's developed quicker than expected. "A little bit. A little bit," Childers admitted. "Sometimes when freshmen have to fight their way to the floor they don't get a chance to show what they've got. In our case, we've just thrown 'em to the wolves. "But the biggest mistake I made this year was not putting her out there sooner. I tried to ease her into it. The first three or four games she looked lost. When I made the decision at Charlotte to start her, you could see everything just settle down for her." Beyond basketball, Fann is a solid student -- "conscientious and spiritual," Childers said. "She's going to make her mark here on campus in other ways than just basketball," Childers said. The traits aren't something acquired overnight. According to her mother, she's had them all of her life, in the classroom, on the court and in the community. "She's made good grades, never got into any trouble. Been a great kid," Smith said. "We tried to express that it was most important to make good grades and basketball was extra, a bonus for her good work." Basketball and academics are a big part of her life, but so are other things. King, her high school coach, said "she's got her life lined up and knows what she wants," with basketball mixing easily with her religion and education. "She's an outstanding person," King said. Away from the court, Fann has a special relationship with Matt Reed, a cerebral palsy victim who helped coach the Hazel Green girls team last year and was in her Hazel Green graduating class. "He came into my life my senior year," Fann said. "I had always gone to high school with him, but never really had that relationship -- too busy or whatever." Reed's aunt, who attends the same church as Fann, asked the Trojans' coaching staff if Reed could help with the girls team. "At first, we were like, 'This is good,'" Fann recalled. "But we didn't realize how awesome it was to build a relationship with him, just go through a season with him. "He really knows the game. He knows it better than anybody I've ever been around. If only he wasn't in a wheelchair he could do so many things. He loves the game. "One of the things he's always said, 'You know when I go to heaven I'm going to get a new body. I'm going to be able to play basketball. I'm going to be able to walk around and do these things.'" Fann, who rates religion, family and basketball, in that order, says Reed has shown her much about life. "Just to have that relationship with him made me never take for granted the gifts that God has given me, just to go out every day and play basketball and just to get up every morning and walk around," Fann said. Reed watched Winthrop play at Birmingham-Southern earlier this year. When Fann saw him in the corner she "almost started crying." "He's awesome," she said. The Hazel Green community hasn't forgotten Fann or Haugtvedt, traveling to Austin Peay and Birmingham-Southern to watch the two favorite daughters play. Coaches, friends, family members and church members donned Winthrop T-shirts. "We're pretty proud of her," Tom Fann said. "She's always been a kid that everybody liked. She got along with everybody and she'd always take to the people who weren't always in the group, the mainstream of school, always made them feel welcome. "I love her as my daughter and everything, but she has a good heart. That's probably the biggest thing about her."

Hand, Brown Wow McKenzie Crowd with Treys
BrookeHand2
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Junior Katasha Brown and freshman Brooke Hand combined for seven 3-pointers in front of a crowd of 2,051 Saturday night at the McKenzie Arena. Brown led four Lady Mocs in double figures and entered UTC’s Top-20 all-time scoring list with 953 career points as Chattanooga defeated intrastate rival East Tennessee State 87-64. Brown went 7-of-9 from the field and 3-for-4 from beyond the arc for a team-high 17 points and four rebounds and had the only blocked shot for Chattanooga in the contest. Hand lit up the boards in the first half hitting all four of her 3-pointers in the opening period. She went 5-for-9 on the night for 14 points and grabbed four boards. Both teams were held scoreless for the first 1:58 of the game before Tiffani Roberson struck underneath with a pair of layups to spark an 18-3 run. Chattanooga’s stingy defense only allowed the Bucaneers 7-of-29 in the first half and led 43-16 at the break. “It was nice to get off to a good start,” UTC head coach Wes Moore said. “I’ve been teased a couple of times this year with their good play, but then we fall back.” Chattanooga improved its league leading record to 17-3 overall and 12-3 in the conference. East Tennessee State falls to 8-11 overall and are even in the league at 6-6. The Lady Mocs shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the first half on 16-of-24 shooting and closed out the game with its best offensive output of the season at 57.6 percent. UTC tallied an amazing 71.4 percent from beyond the arc on 5-of-7 shooting in the first half and Hand was a perfect 4-for-4 in the period from the 3-point line. “It felt good tonight,” Hand said. “But there have been games where I’d make the first one and then couldn’t make another the rest of the night.” Hand and Brown have a league-leading 39 treys each. The Bucs were led by Kelly Turman with a game-high 24 points while the league’s leading scorer Tiffani Mayes was held to 14 points on the night and just three in the first half. She had a game-high seven rebounds and tallied both of ETSU’s blocked shots. The team’s second leading scorer, B.J. Banjo was held scoreless until she scored two free throws with 3:43 to go in the game. UTC freshman Alex Anderson chipped in 11 points and three rebounds and Laura Hall had 10 points on the night. Tiffany Patton pulled down a game-high seven rebounds and Nicole Mattison had nine points, five boards and seven assists, raising her season total to a conference-best 82. UTC outrebounded the Bucs 38-25 and forced 14 turnovers. Chattanooga’s bench outscored the Bucs 39-30 and UTC put back 14 second chance points to the Bucs five. The Lady Mocs never trailed in the game and led by as much as 32 in the game. This is the last Southern Conference game for the Buccaneers in the McKenzie Arena. The two teams are not slated to play each other next season when East Tennessee leaves the league. It will be ETSU head coach Karen Kemp's first time outside the SoCon in 18 years. She is in her 11th season at ETSU and served at UTC under former head coach Craig Parrot for seven seasons. Brown passed Kendra Bell (1980-84) for 20th place on UTC's all-time scoring list. Bell had 941 points over her four-year career with the Lady Mocs under former head coach Sharon Fanning. Brown needs just 12 points to pass Anita Overcast's (1991-95) 964 points. Chattanooga will face the only Southern Confernce team to beat UTC in nearly two years when Georgia Southern comes to town Monday night. The game will tip off at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles posted a 61-53 win over the Lady Mocs on Jan. 4 in Statesboro, Ga. Brown, Hand Clicking
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Brooke Hand and Katasha Brown were both hitting on all cylinders Monday night combining for nine 3-pointers in Chattanooga’s 70-48 win over Appalachian State at the McKenzie Arena, halting the Mountaineers’ 3-pointer streak at 367 games. “I like for both of us to be on,” Hand said. “It’s a lot of fun.” For the first time since Jan. 15, 1992, the Mountaineers could not connect on a shot from 3-point land. ASU had many good looks, but the ball just didn’t fall its way missing on all nine attempts. The ball seemed to start falling Brown’s way again as the junior scored a team-high 19 points and connected on 4-of-6 treys, tying her season high against Northwestern on Nov. 26.“It feels good to contribute offensively,” Brown said. “It felt the same tonight as it has in the past four or five games. I don’t know what was different.”Hand seems to click more at home than on the road. In the McKenzie Arena, she has connected on 25 including a SoCon best six against Wofford this season. The Moulton, Ala., freshman has a team-best 33 treys on the year going 5-for-10 tonight from beyond the arc with four in the second half.“It seems like it takes the whole first half to get the jitters out,” Hand said.

Roberson went 8-for-13 from the floor to lead all scorers with 17 points and pulled down 10 off the glass for just her fourth double-double performance in her career. She had one blocked shot and tallied her 100th career steal... Brooke Hand drained four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points and Katasha Brown had just one 3-pointer on seven tries but was a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line for 11 points. Brown and Hand each have a team-high 28 treys on the season... Two lead changes later, Hand would hit her second of four 3-pointers of the game to give Chattanooga the lead for good 22-20 with 7:59 to play in the half sparking a 10-1 run. Chattanooga would commit just one turnover for the remainder of the half and run its lead to as much as nine.

Brooke Hand
Alabama Elite Alumni
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Freshman Brooke Hand nailed six 3-pointers for a team-high 18 points to lead the Lady Mocs to a 85-43 Southern Conference win over Wofford Monday night at the McKenzie Arena. That runs UTC's consecutive wins to nine on the year. Hand hit her first 3-pointer at the 12:01 mark in the second half to put Chattanooga up 58-34. She then unleashed three more in a row and increased the Lady Mocs lead to 33 points. Hand’s final trey came with just 1:32 remaining as the Lady Mocs pulled ahead 83-43. “Obviously I’m happy for Brooke, “UTC head coach Wes Moore said. “She shoots well in practice, but that hadn’t carried over to a game yet. If she can keep it up, we have to find a way to get her into the game more.” The Terriers (2-9, 0-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead, but Chattanooga came back to take a 9-8 lead at 13:31 on a layup from Tiffany Patton. That started a 13-0 run for the Lady Mocs capped off at 8:40 on a 3-pointer by Katasha Brown to give UTC its largest lead of the half at 20-8. The Lady Mocs led 35-26 at the break on 52 percent shooting. Chattanooga started the second half with a 9-2 run, pulling ahead 46-28. The Lady Mocs stifled the Terriers midway through the second half and put the game out of reach with a 25-0 run started at 12:38 on a 3-pointer by freshman Laura Hall. The run included four of Hand’s treys and ended on a pair of free throws from freshman KeKe McWilliams to put UTC up 74-34. “We took care of the ball better,” Moore said. “We executed well and to off good shots. We needed that especially heading into Wednesday night against Furman. It should be a good game.” Moore shook up the lineup a few times and for a 5:15 span, all five players on the floor were freshman. That is just the second time he has done that this year. “We need that confidence,” Hand said. “It helps form a bond between us. When the others begin to graduate, we need to have that confidence.” Led by Hand, four Lady Mocs hit double figures. Tiffani Roberson went 4-for-5 from the field and hit all four from the charity stripe for 12 points and pulled down six boards. Brown and Nicole Mattison each had 11 points. Brown had three blocks and three assists while Mattison dished out five assists and grabbed five rebounds. Chattanooga shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the floor for the second time this season. Ricaye Harris reeled off 19 points in the first half and looked unstoppable. She was perfect from the floor and the free throw line hitting 7-of-7 including three 3-pointers and was 2-for-2 from the charity stripe. The Lady Mocs shut down her offense in the second half only allowing her four points for a game-high 23 points. She closed out the game hitting 9-of-12. Jenny Weurdling had five blocks for the Terriers and K.C. Correll grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. Chattanooga won the battle for rebounds 41-35 and forced 22 turnovers to 13. Chattanooga held Wofford to 17-of-57 shooting for 29.8 percent allowing just four treys, all in the first half. The Lady Mocs (9-2, 4-0) ran its consecutive win streak to nine games this season and now have 36 straight SoCon wins dating back to Feb. 2003. UTC will host Furman Wednesday night at the Roundhouse. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. Wofford will host UNC Greensboro after the Christmas holidays.
