Alabama Elite: Welcome
Welcome to the Home of the "Alabama Elite"
Alabama Elite Club Basketball was started in 1999 under the direction of Mike Ellen with the goal of promoting basketball in Huntsville, Madison and surrounding areas. We are a 501c3 non-profit organization and where "The Tradition Continues". In the past Alabama Elite has featured boy's and girl's teams from the ages of 9 to 17 years old. The 2009 season is going better than ever. Mike Ellen has picked up a number of new sponsors to go along with our 3 big cooperate sponsors. These sponsors will play a big role in the older teams that will play in college exposure tournaments. The Alabama Elite club has been carrying girls to college exposure tournaments since 2002. This year the 13U, 14U, 15U, and 16Us will be traveling across the southeast to play in front of hundreds of college coaches at all levels. If you would like information about any of the Alabama Elite teams or if you are interested in becoming a part of Alabama Elite, please email me at mikeellen@knology.net or mike@alabamaelite.com or call me at (256) 895-0872 / (256) 527-4167 Cell.

Minnesota Gophers sign ex-Elite PG to National Letter of Intent
Minnesota head coach Pam Borton announced
that China Antoine from Shelton State Community College (Ala.) has signed a
National Letter of Intent. Antoine, a 5-3 point guard, will join the Golden
Gopher as a junior in the 2009-10 season. “We are excited to have China join our
program,” said Borton. “A point guard and leader, China is a proven winner and
her teams have won a lot! Coming from a program that is used to winning is
something we look for in recruiting student-athletes to our program. China is a
great fit for our program and we are excited to welcome her into our Gopher family.”
Antoine helped the Lady Bucs to NCJAA National Tournament appearances in both
2008 and 2009. Shelton State finished sixth in the tournament last season,
posting a 38-6 overall record. The 2008 squad placed seventh and collected a
31-5 record. Shelton State captured Alabama Community College Conference titles
(ACCC) in both seasons. Antoine finished the 2008-09 season among the NJCAA
leaders in assists and steals. She dished out 6.9 assists per game to rank
fourth in the nation, while her 3.2 steals per game ranked 21st. During the
season, Antoine earned All-ACCC Second Team honors and went on to collect MVP
accord at both the conference and regional tournaments. Antoine is from Madison,
Ala., and was a 2007 graduate of Bob Jones High School.

Fann Named All-Conference and All-Academic Team
|
 |
Consistency, by definition, is a firmness or constitution of
character. Consistency by action, then, must be Ashley
Fann. All-Region in basketball four times and All-State three
times while at Hazel Green High School. A four-year starter
at Division I Winthrop. A four-year scoring average of 12.9
points per game, never going above 13.7 and never falling
below 12.2 in any one season. An All-Academic member. A degree in biology in hand come
May. Four years in, four years out. No wasted time here. "I'm a routine-oriented person," Fann said. Her most recent one, the one Fann has engaged in since
leaving Madison County in 2005, is close to being
interrupted for good. It may or may not happen this morning
when the fourth-seeded Lady Eagles take on fifth-seeded
Coastal Carolina in the Big South Tournament in High Point,
N.C. "On Senior Night (last Friday), winning the last home
game (a 72-58 victory over UNC-Asheville), me and my team
had a moment at the center of the court," Fann said.
"All of the seniors were crying. It was kind of like a
huge group hug. I really seems like yesterday that we were
coming in as freshmen." No one has meant more to the women's program at
Winthrop, a small liberal arts college in Rock Hill, S.C.,
than the 6-foot Fann. She came into a rebuilding situation -
the team won all of two games the year before she arrived
and had not had a winning season since the mid-1980s -
quickly became the face of the program and will leave
school's all-time leading scorer and rebounder. In between, there were some tough times. As sophomores, she
and fellow Hazel Green alum Ashley Haugtvedt were part of
the youngest team in the country - there were no juniors or
seniors on the roster - and Winthrop went 6-26. "We were sophomores trying to lead ourselves as well as
the freshmen," Fann said. "It was a really hard
season for us, but I think it's been instrumental to
taking us where we are now as a team." Where they are now is on solid ground. The Lady Eagles
bounced back with a school-record 20-win season in 2007-08
and won their final three games of this regular season to go
into the conference tourney above .500 at 15-14. In the meantime, the women have gone from playing in front
of, as Fann said, "our families, a few of our friends
and one or two people who just came" to a crowd that
fills out a respectable portion of the 6,100-seat Winthrop
Coliseum. "The support we've gained over the years is really
special to me," she said. n the interim, Fann has had to stand on her own two feet.
Rock Hill is seven-plus hours from home, limiting her return
visits during the school year to two or three per year. "Being away from home has helped me a lot," she
said. "You learn responsibility, time management and
self-discipline, you learn to prioritize things. You realize
what the real world is going to be like." In the short term, her thought process won't deviate
much. Fann plans to go to graduate school to study physical
therapy and wants to give the pro game overseas a shot, too. If the past is a prelude, her effort will be determined, the
results solid. In other words, consistent. Before leaving her home floor for the final time, though,
Fann showed that another label could apply to her. In that
game against UNC-Asheville, she scored a career-high 27
points, including 23 in the second half. That kind of performance deserves a different kind of
adjective. Spectacular.

ROCK HILL, SC—Tiffany Rodd and Ashley Fann combined to score 52 points in a 75-66 victory over Charleston Southern for Winthrop’s six consecutive win, Saturday afternoon in Big South Conference action. Rodd scored a career-high 27 points and Fann tied her career-high with 25 points as the duo helped Winthrop improve to 2-0 in the Big South for just the second time in school history. Both were part of the first team to ever start 2-0 in league play as freshmen in 2005-06. In addition, the Eagles improved to 14-6 on the season and the 14-wins ties the school record for wins at the NCAA Division I level. The 2005-06 set the mark with a 14-15 record. After leading by 13 points at the break, Winthrop opened up the second half on a 4-0 run to lead 46-29 with 18:10 remaining in the game. Charleston Southern (6-14, 1-2) responded with an 8-0 run behind the three-point shooting of Katie Tull. Rodd answered with a three to push the lead back to 12 and Winthrop held a double-figure lead nine and a half minutes. Charleston Southern made a late push and got the lead down to just seven points with 2:28 to go after two Natalie Caldwell free throws. The Lady Bucs nearly got a defensive stop, but Ashley Haugtvedt came through for the Eagles as her put-back off a Fann miss as time expired on the shot clock pushed the lead back to nine and the Eagles held on from there... Charleston Southern continued to hold onto a small lead until the 13:43 mark as Fann connected on a three from the top of the key. That put Winthrop up 14-12, a lead it didn’t lose the rest of the game. Trailing by three points, Rodd started a 12-0 run that put Winthrop up nine points. Winthrop eventually pushed the lead to 42-29 at half time. It was the second time Rodd has scored 20 or more points this season and the third time for Fann. Rodd finished the game 10-for-18 from the field and 6-for-11 behind the arc. She also had two steals. Fann finished 9-for-14 from the field and a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line. She also had two assists and nine rebounds. The 25 points by fan gives her 1,003 points for her career. She became just the fourth player in school history to reach 1,000 points in a career before her senior season. She is also just the 7th player at Winthrop to score 1,000 or more points and pull down at least 500 rebounds.
